Step by Step Japanese Cooking2 reviews
Lesley Downer, Minoru Yoneda

Barrons Educational Series Inc, 1986

One of the few Japanese cookbooks worth looking for.
This book has numerous color photos, and includes clearly written step-by-step procedures for making many of the dishes you'll find in a Japanese restaurant. The range of recipes span from appetizers, to rice dishes, to miso soup, to sushi and dessert. There are so many photos to guide you through the cooking process, that you are left with few (if any) questions. I've looked at a lot of ...

At the Japanese Table2 reviews
Lesley Downer

Chronicle Books, 1993

Great book - really informative
This book is a great introduction to Japanese cooking. It covers everything from sushi to noodles to soup. If you want to learn about what kind of plates to serve dinner on, look here. There's even information about how to hold your chopsticks. I was so inspired I went out, bought the ingredients, and made dinner out of the book the first night I had it.

Ready or Not . . . Get Set Go (An Entrepreneurs Guide to Starting and Maintaining a Successful Business)3 reviews
Sheila A. Downer

Professional Prodigy, 2000

Easy Read & Informative
In comparison to other books that I have read and/or bought, this one is highly recommended as a must read. The book is informative in so many ways. Example: the chapter on zoning was to the point minus legal jargon; and the usual redundant babble that is of no value for being an entrepreneur, it's only to fill up the page. I've found that most books on being an entrepreneur graze over the ...

A Father's Reward - Raising Your Children to Walk in the Truth4 reviews
Phil Downer, Jerry MacGregor

Harvest House Pub, 1998

Father's Reward
I gave this book to my son. After he read it his wife (my daughter-in-law) gave me a big hug thanking me for giving it to him. She and the kids had benefitted from my sons application of the Biblical truth in this book to his life.

Books of the Keepers1 review
Ann Downer

Atheneum, 1993

Believe the editorial reviews!!!
I can't believe that: 1. this book hasn't had any reader reviews yet 2. Ann Downer seems not to have written any more fantasy, considering that she started this trilogy when she was 13. I actually read the omnibus edition and if you can find it, you should buy that since all three books are interwoven on several story-strands (although you can easily enjoy them on their own). That's one of the ...

The Dragon of Never-Was4 reviews
Ann Downer

Hopefully Not the Last Book in the Series!
Further to Hatching Magic, this book reunites a young wyvern (try to picture a catlike dragon) with a similarly young wizard. Vyrna (the wyvern) and Theodora (the wizard) have been separated by an ocean since the Events of Last Summer - when they put a stop to the plans of an evil wizard that involved time travel, demon possession, and the summoning of a Chinese dragon in the middle of ...

Tranquilizer, Barbiturate, and Downer Drug Dangers1 review
Michelle M. Houle

Bt Bound, 2003

A work of genius!
Prior to reading this book I would have numbered the most powerful works of literature in my reading experience as follows: 1) Blindness by Jose Saramago 2) One Hundred Years of Solitude by Marquez 3) Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier 4) The Grapes of Wrath by Steinbeck 5) Death of a Salesman by Miller Now, however, the old order has been shaken. It says in the Bible that there is no new thing ...

Madame Sadayakko1 review
Lesley Downer

Gotham, 2004

Not the typical bit of history you would expect to learn.
Madame Sadayakko was an enjoyable book and a quick read. Perhaps it was quick because I couldn't wait to get to the next point in the adventure of her life. Many of the biographies I read from this period criss cross into each other. This was the exception. This was a colorful and exciting piece of history I never gave a thought to explore. I'm glad I did

Japanese Vegetarian Cooking1 review
Lesley Downer

Pantheon, 1987

unique and clear
This is the only good vegetarian Japanese cookbook I have found. The author is a British woman who lived and worked in Japan for several years, and developed vegetarian recipes with the Japanese women she lived with. She is creative and successful in the way she modifies traditional Japanese recipes to fit into a vegetarian lifestyle. She incorporates personal stories and Japanese history into ...
