Marion Chesney

Robert Hale Ltd, 1998

Mira's boisterous and slides down banisters ...
The London marriage mart held no interest for Mira, as she had her heart set on a childhood dream. Once her diabolical sister learns of the dream, she sets out to win the hand of Lord Charles, object of Mira's dreams. Mira had many jealous temper tantrums (including pushing her sister into a fountain) and nearly ruined her own respectibility. Dorothy H. Fowler

Shareing This book
I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area and have never really known the real impact the 1906 Earthquake had on its people. I really enjoyed reading this book. Things and places are so familiar to me. My daughter loves San Francisco and the History surrounding the City. After I bought the book and read it I told her about it and she wanted to Borrow it from me. I decided I would get ...

Dreadful Judgement2 reviews
Neil Hanson

CORGI BOOKS (TWLD), 2002

A glimpse into the 1600s...
The Great Fire of London was a catastrophic event, destroying much of London in 1666, and is the basis of Hanson's excellent book. He sets the scene superbly, beginning by describing the life and mood of London in 1666 in a vivid manner. By bringing to life some of the characters of the time, such as the baker Thomas Farriner, in whose premises the fire began, and King Charles II, the story is ...

Varney the Vampire; or, The Feast of Blood8 reviews
James, Malcolm Rymer

zittaw press, 2007

Varney Finally Dug Up!!!
Varney The Vampire is an important leader in the vampire legacy. And here is the ultimate critical edition. I am so excited about the extras in this book. There are some arcane references in the original text that are finally footnoted and explained. I highly recommend this edition. A+++

Haunted Delaware: Delightfully Dreadful Legends of the First State5 reviews
Caroline Woods

Infinity Publishing, 2000

Smashing debut by a very talented teenager!!
If you're in the mood for a good shiver, read this one alone at night! The author, a 16-year-old prodigy, has a flair for dramatic imagery. Most adults would be proud to "set the stage" the way she does! She also has a wonderful way of taking historical facts and adding (in italics) her own imaginative details. In sum, Haunted Delaware is the most entertaining book of ghost stories that ...

This Dreadful Deed2 reviews
Paul H. Kogel

Amazon, 2008

I don't like bats either
I love the moral greyness, tormented spirit, and gore-iffic violence of this cool vampire story! Everything a vampire story should be and not a cheerleader with a stake on a crossbow to be found! I know how I want to die now. Vampires.

Dreadful Delineations1 review
John Maclay

Delirium Books, 2007

One Of The Best
I had never read anything by John Maclay before and have had this book sitting in my to be read pile for a few months. I finally picked it up and started reading it and I am blown away. This is a book about real horrors and Maclay is a master of the short story. With in the first two stories I knew I had found a gem. The first story about an old murder by a normal guy had me cringing, the second ...

Dreadful Sorry48 reviews
Kathryn Reiss, 2008

An intriguing, haunting mystery with a dash of romance.
I first read this book I was in the 6th grade, and I recently bought it and read it again. I have to say, I liked it better the first time round. But that might have been because I was younger, and this book seems suited for the pre-teen, young teen audience. The book I recently bought was different from when I read it in 6th grade--the cover was different, and I was disappointed because this ...

Dreadful David1 review
Sally Odgers

Omnibus Books, 1984

Dreadful David Rules!
Dreadful David has been in print continuously since 1984. The edition I have seen most lately is small and slim, but has the same text and the same lively illustrations at a very attractive price. David is an energetic little bloke, busy and endearingly naughty. His original admirers now sometimes have children of their own!

Dreadful Lies1 review
Michele Bailey

St Martins Pr, 1996

Easy, fun read
This was a very fun, easy read. So much of an easy read, that I finished it in one day! Mathilda Haycastle is the books heroine, and any woman, no matter where they come from or live, can relate to her personal life that is revealed in the books pages. I would highly recommend this book to anyone; it definitely keeps you guessing until the very end!

The Family at Red-Roofs / Those Dreadful Children1 review
Enid Blyton

HarperCollins Publishers, 1988

the best children's author E.V.E.R
Its a pity kids in the United States are unaware of this british author...its even more of a pity that many of her family-themed books are going out of print. Although written in the 1940s-50s, Enid Blyton books are very popular all over the world, esp. UK, India, Australia (and other colonies:-). To me, she is the original J.K Rowlings. she writes stories for kids so that they can remain kids ...

A harsh and dreadful love: Dorothy Day and the Catholic Worker Movement1 review
William D Miller

Darton, Longman & Todd, 1973

History of the most significant movement of the 20th c.
I first learned about the Catholic Worker when I stumbled across a copy of the newspaper in a dorm lounge while I was still in college. The front page included a story about St Julian of Norwich and how she was one of the first mystics to view God as both Father and Mother. I don't remember if this was before or after I had made the decision to become Catholic, but it stuck with me. The ...

Dreadful Ed1 review
Andrew Cosby, Troy Nixey

Dark Horse, 2006

A CROSS BETWEEN DR. SEUSS AND CHARLES ADDAMS
Take one part Dr. Seuss and one part Charles Addams, throw in some wonderful art work and the result is "Dreadful Ed" by Dark Horse Comics. This is a hardcover children's story although it might prove to be a little too intense for the very young but when it comes right down to it, "Dreadful Ed" is a delight for all ages, and anyone who loves a scary, yet touching story. Nocturnia is the home ...

Phenomenal Debut
Randy Cecil is an original. His first solo book- writing and illustrating- is a welcome addition to any child's library. The artwork is superb and my wife laughed out loud several times reading it. Great job, Randy, here's to a long career.

Dreadful freedom,: A critique of existentialism,1 review
Marjorie Glicksman Grene

University Of Chicago Press, 1957

An excellent introduction
This book by Marjorie Grene, available under another title of 'Introduction to Existentialism', provides in a very short space an excellent introduction to the basic thinking of existentialism, a philosophy that has its beginnings in the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century, and may be considered one of the greatest schools of philosophy for the twentieth ...
