Secondhand Chic: Finding Fabulous Fashion at Consignment, Vintage, and Thrift Shops25 reviews
Christa Weil

Pocket, 1999

Excellent and useful book
This is oneof the best books to read if you're interested in, or if you collect and wear, vintage clothing. From how to read the quality of materials and workmanship in a garments, to how to take care of cleaning them, the information is presented in a witty, informative, useful way. Weil has not only great information, but a way with words and the turn of a phrase, which made the book that much ...

Ann Likes Red38 reviews
Dorothy Z. Seymour

Purple House Press, 2001

family mantra
I read Ann Likes Red so many times to my daughters, that it became a family mantra. Mashed potatoes Susan? No, Ann likes red! she would reply. Stringed beans, Emilie? No! Ann likes red. Imagine my surprise to find that the book is still available through Amazon, and that others loved it as much as we did.

Love, Loss, and What I Wore20 reviews
Ilene Beckerman

Algonquin Books, 1995

It's how we remember
I, like most of my women friends I've talked to, including my mother and my sisters, shape memories and moments based on the clothes we were wearing at the time. I bought this book in 1995 when it was first published and have referred to it several times over the years for inspiration and support. I found it in the "Self-Help" section of the bookstore. This little book does as good a job ...

Career and Corporate Cool (TM)23 reviews
Rachel C. Weingarten

Wiley, 2007

Highly Recommended!
Reviewed by Irene Watson for Reader Views (8/07) Rachel Weingarten's bio is impressive. It is obvious she knows what she is talking about when it comes to looking and dressing the part in a career. As a previous workshop instructor of creating a successful outside appearance, I was very interested in reading Rachel's book to see if there have been any changes in the years since I taught ...

Caps for Sale: A Tale of a Peddler, Some Monkeys and Their Monkey Business70 reviews

HarperTrophy, 1987

Me and my 2.5 year old son love this book
This is a great book for kids, even young ones around 2.5 years old. It's an engaging story and my son loves the part where the man wakes up to find his hats gone, and looks up and sees all the monkeys wearing the hats! He asks me to read it everynight, and remembers the phrase "caps for sale."

Blue Hat, Green Hat70 reviews

Little Simon, 1984

Great early toddlerhood book
We have a bunch of Sandra Boynton books, and this one is definitely my daughter's favorite. She pretends to read it, and it was pretty useful when she was learning colors. She started with it early, before she was one, and she still pulls it out quite frequently at a ripe toddler age of 22 months. I like the way when she says, Oops! pointing to turkey, and she always thinks that that turkey got ...

Froggy Gets Dressed18 reviews
Jonathan London

Puffin, 1995

4 1/2 Reversive Recursive: Fun With Froggy
Another in the prolific Jonathan London's "Froggy" series, this book about the amphibious one is a recursive story about all the clothes you must wear on a snowy day--and all the clothes you must take off (in the reverse order) when you forget to put some on. In this Froggy tale, our green hero wakes up with incredible enthusiasm--it's like he was raised on caffeine--and he just CANNOT wait to ...

Fancy Nancy158 reviews
Jane O'Connor

HarperCollins, 2005

Love to Be Fancy
What a wonderful book! Well, I admit, mostly I like looking at the pictures. But even for someone who's completely grown out of pink and purple, I often read this book wishing I could have the self-confidence to dress just like Nancy. I've read things about this book saying that there is no deep message, but I think there are several. I love that Nancy's parents make room for her to be herself ...

Vintage Halloween Collectibles: Identification & Price Guide17 reviews
Mark B. Ledenbach

Krause Publications, 2003

INDISPENSIBLE FOR THE HALLOWEEN COLLECTOR
Another Halloween has come and gone but for some people like myself, the Halloween holiday lives on 365 days a year due to my love of the holiday and my passion for Halloween décor. When I was a kid, I used to be rather afraid of the old decorations in my grandmother's house. These were quite a bit scarier than those jointed cardboard skeletons and plastic light-up pumpkins that I was used ...

Dover Publications, monarchs of 19th-century fashion surveys, have hit another one clean out of the park with this superb examination of Victorian and Edwardian fashion from the coronation of Victoria to the early 1900's. Originally published in England in the early 1960's as "The Mirror of Reality", this book was acquired and republished by Dover in a handy paperback edition up to their usual ...

Clothes and the Man: The Principles of Fine Men's Dress15 reviews
Alan Flusser

Villard, 1985

Classic Timelessness
This is a quick, one-day read, but a lifetime keeper for reference. Mr. Flusser covers all the essentials in detail: suit coats; suit trousers; sport coats; blazers; dress shirts; neckties; handkerchiefs; hose (socks); shoes; hats; and jewelery. He covers sportswear such as cable-knit pullover sweaters and cardigans very briefly. Mr. Flusser asserts the lines, look, and feel of all fine ...

Costume in Detail Women's Dress 1730-193013 reviews
Nancy Margetts Bradfield

Plays, 1983

Very detailed
I would have loved to had seen the pieces of the garment drawn in their pattern shapes, but otherwise an excellent book with much detail written about each garment. Only other problem was that sometimes the writer's handwriting about the details on the drawings were a bit hard to decifer.

Dressed for the Photographer: Ordinary Americans and Fashion, 1840-190014 reviews
Joan L. Severa

Kent State University Press, 1997

Unique perspective, well-written, fascinating pictures
It is a rare opportunity to see how people dressed in reality so far in the past. Fashion plates show the garment in its perfect form, portraits are idealized, and original illustrations change the proportions, whether purposefully or not, to fit the times of the artist, not that of the garment. The pictures feature a range of people from different walks of life in different situations, and ...

Top Ten Uses for an Unworn Prom Dress14 reviews
Tina Ferraro

Topeka Bindery, 2007

Really good chic lit!
Nicolette, a savvy, likable, down-to-earth sophomore, was asked to the prom by Rascal, the hottest boy in the junior class, which is something the reader wonders about for the whole book. Why would an upperclassman hottie scope out a lowly sophomore. That bit of information is disclosed in the end, and anyone who is or was a teen will recognize this typical teen behavior. In the meantime, Nic ...
