An important book to read for anyone interested in ECT
Max Fink's book discusses ECT in detail, but also in terms that the majority of patients can understand. It is clearly written, without hype, and describes ECT from the perspective of an experienced and caring clinician. I frequently recommend it for patients who are considering ECT. As for vagus nerve stimulation, studies indicate that while it may be helpful for chronic depression, it ...

Excellent Review of ECT - electroconvulsive, electroshock
This book by Dr. Robert P. Morgan explores the history of ECT, as well as its re-emergence as a treatment of choice, based on the marketing of a new and improved ECT. Says Morgan: "The only depression it cures is the economic depression of psychiatry." Anyone who is interested in the history of ECT and the medical issues surrounding it should read this book. It includes chapters by Dr. Peter ...

Stretch your mind: read this book
Counterintuitive in an age when the "chemical imbalance" mythology of emotional problems is commonly accepted as fact, this updated work by Breggin demonstrates that psychiatrists have sold the public a bill of goods. People taking or sanctioning the taking of psychiatric drugs do not realize that much of the perceived good from these agents derives from the emotional blunting that they cause in ...

A Personal Experience with Antipsychotics
This book helped my son, but unfortunately the information it contains came to me too late to help a woman friend whose brain was severely damaged by neuroleptic drugs. My son was taking a popular anti-depressant administered by a Psychaitrist. He was able to get out of bed which was some improvement in his condition and was limping along through life when I told him of the possible ...

This volume uncovers the roots of electroshock in America, an outgrowth of western patriarchal medicine with primarily female patients. The history of electroshock in the United States in three historic stages is chronicled as it alternated from an enthusiastic reception in 1940, to a period of crisis in the 1960s, to its resurgence after 1980. Early American experiments with electrical medicine are also examined, while the development of ...

Not a Medical Book
Descartes Li misses the point. This is not a medical book. This is not a self-help book. You should NOT be buying this if you are trying to evaluate the strengths or possibilities of ECT for yourself or anyone else. This is a social and historical examination of the practice. If you want to know about the social implications of ECT, or how medicine and medical "knowledge" affect our selves, ...

This book will open your eyes to the myth that if you can't fix something with a pill, then it can't be fixed at all. An exvellent read. A bit advanced, but still can be followed and understood. A word of warning: If you have a psychiatrist treating you, he/she probably won't appreciate your input from this book. But I still think it informs and then allows you to discuss treatment options ...

Don't bother
Regardless of where you stand on the ECT/Anti-ECT controversy, I don't think you'll find this book to be worth your time. It appears to be designed as an anti-ECT tome, but I would have a lot of trouble citing any of its points in a debate.
