Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Pronouns And Prepositions 72 reviews Dorothy Richmond
McGraw-Hill, 1998
Comprehensive and Easy to Read I am very pleased with the book. Basically I am a "self-learner' of the Spanish language. As such I find the book to be comprehensive, yet thorough and easy to read and understand. The Practice Makes Perfect series of books on the Spanish language is a great set of books for some one like me.

Easy French Reader 36 reviews R. de Roussy de Sales
McGraw-Hill, 2003
What a great book! With very little French (what I got from a phrasebook on holiday for a couple of weeks), I bought this book and started reading it on the train to work. It was great. It has a good lexicon in the back, and as you progress most new words appear in the margin with a translation. It still takes effort, but is a great way to get your vocab and reading up and running. I am now reading it again, as ...

Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Verb Tenses 128 reviews Dorothy Richmond
McGraw-Hill, 1996
Perfect for me I'm a Spanish student (beginner level) and I find this book really useful. It has a lot of exercises which is not so hard but makes you learn a lot. I know this is not enough to be fluent with Spanish. I know I really need to speak a lot of Spanish each day for me to be fluent and that is why Practice makes perfect! If you are a beginner then I recommend this book to you.

How to Write a Lot: A Practical Guide to Productive Academic Writing 39 reviews Paul J. Silvia
American Psychological Association (APA), 2007
fantastic book The book is very readable, to-the-point, and its arguments are well-supported. Silvia takes a behavioral approach to writing, focusing on how to form effective writing habits. His book is focused on the field of psychology, but his methods are certainly applicable to non-fiction writing in other areas as well.

English Grammar In Use with Answers and CD ROM: A Self-study Reference and Practice Book for Intermediate ... 19 reviews Raymond Murphy
Cambridge University Press, 2004
Incredible Resource ! I always keep a copy of this and PRACTICAL ENGLISH GRAMMAR within reach when I teach.
Its very good when I have to put together an impromptu grammar lesson, especially on a point that I've totally forgotten. The only catch is that (as another reviewer pointed out), the book uses British English... and sometimes as an American teacher I have to think a bit. (Usually I explain this to the ...

Al-Kitaab fii Ta'allum al-'Arabiyya with DVDs: A Textbook for Beginning Arabic, Part One Second Edition 34 reviews Kristen Brustad, Mahmoud Al-Batal, ...
Georgetown University Press, 2004
Al-Kitaab Part 1 This is a well designed textbook. Heavy on vocabulary, but presented in context. The DVD that accompanies it is very helpful for pronunciation and listening practice. Assumes a knowledge of Arabic script and the 150 vocabulary words presented in Alif Baa: Introduction to Arabic Letters and Sounds, so if you haven't already gone through Alif Baa, I recommend starting there.

The New Penguin Russian Course: A Complete Course for Beginners (Penguin Handbooks) 59 reviews Nicholas J. Brown
Penguin (Non-Classics), 1996
Best foreign language learner's book, bar none I have studied on my own at various levels of seriousness 6 languages in my life, (some to the extent of becoming fully fluent, some becoming basically conversational, and some starting and giving up out of disinterest or dislike for the language in general) and amid the many books I've used for all the languages, I found this book to be the best book for any independent foreign language learner ...

My students take this book with them everywhere they go and they are the ones who started calling this their "bible."

Madrigal's Magic Key to Spanish: A Creative and Proven Approach 78 reviews Margarita Madrigal
Main Street Books, 1989
Opinion of Madrigal's Magic Key to Spanish This is an excellent book. Its approach to teaching a language is unique in that it gives fourteen patterns of Spanish words relating to English words. Rather than learning one word at a time, I can learn 50 - 100 words. I don't even have to learn individual words. I just have to remember the pattern, e.g. words ending in "ity" in English usually end in "idad" in Spanish. I also have been ...

Muchas palabras y muchas historias This book is excellent. I have gone thru it from A to Z and find virtually no faults with it. There are well over 10,000 words presented, and they are words that are commonly used in every day language. There are plenty of exercises to test your learning abilities. Also there are short stories using the words you have just learned and some you have learned in previous sections. For example, ...

Asking the Right Questions: A Guide to Critical Thinking (8th Edition) 41 reviews Neil Browne, Stuart M. Keeley

Fantastic! This has got to be hands down one of the best books I have ever read. I picked this up for a class I was taking and it really opened my eyes. People see the words "critical thinking" and assume it means something negative. This book teaches you how to use your brain to look at things from all angles and points of view so that you can make more informed choices and decisions!
