Welcome to the Episcopal Church: An Introduction to Its History, Faith, and Worship22 reviews
Christopher L. Webber, Frank T., III Griswold

Morehouse Publishing, 1999

Great Introduction
I am a new member of the Episcopal Church and I have been reading and studying quite a lot about the church and it's history and teachings. This book was an excellent introduction to the Episcopal Church and it was very helpful to me, a new member. This isn't a very big book but it is quite informative. I think anyone interested in the Episcopal Church would do well to read this.

Leaving Church: A Memoir of Faith80 reviews
Barbara Brown Taylor

HarperOne, 2007

A Precious Memoir
Over the course of my life I have learned certain things about salad; it has good, nourishing things in it, like spinach, almonds, feta cheese, and olive oil. Sometimes you can add strawberries. With a splash of balsamic vinegar, it sings. Other times it is dressed with slightly less healthy things like mayonnaise or sour cream, but generally its ingredients have a clear line of succession back ...

Book of Common Prayer Red9 reviews
Bcp7230

HarperOne, 1983

With all my heart, and soul, and strength
The Book of Common Prayer (1979) is the latest, complete BCP used by the American branch of the Anglicans, the Episcopal church. There have been many books that have had the title 'Book of Common Prayer' since the first one appeared in 1549; it has been used continuously in one edition or another in the Anglican tradition since 1559; the 'main' edition remains the 1662 edition. The American ...

A Wing and a Prayer: A Message of Faith and Hope15 reviews
Katharine Jefferts Schori

Morehouse Publishing, 2007

Fantastic Book
This book is wonderful. Every chapter is perfect for a daily inspirational meditation. The entire book is very uplifting and inspiring. I lent my copy to a friend at church, and she loves it. Another friend ordered it, and she loves it. The message is real, down-to-Earth and easy to understand. Although Jefferts Schori is Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, the message is universal. This is ...

In these pages, he offers you a brand new way to use the Book of Common Prayer, that you too might experience new growth, new intimacy with God and a new lens through which to view the world. The Practice of Prayer (The New Church's Teaching Series, Vol 4)3 reviews
Margaret Guenther

Cowley Publications, 1998

A book about prayer for real people!
This book defines, describes, and demystifies the traditions of prayer--and makes them accessible to everyone. It begins with a concise history of Christian prayer and proceeds to practical applications for us late-20th-century folk. Chapters with titles like "Finding God in the Ordinary: Your Kitchen Will Teach You Everything" and "Parenting and Prayer: How Do I Pray When the Baby is Keeping ...

Preaching Life17 reviews
Barbara Brown Taylor

Cowley Publications, 1993

The Preaching life has gifts for clergy and laypeople
Barbara Brown Taylor offers a book here that is a wonderful and moving read. The book takes the form of two parts, each of which offers insight and spiritual direction to aspiring clergy, clergy, and laypeople alike. The first half of the book is a journey through the growth of the author's faith. She speaks of her quest for God that developed from childhood that led to a variety of churches ...

Lesser Feasts And Fasts 2006: The Proper for The, Together With the Fixed Holy Days : Conforming to General ...2 reviews
Church Publishing

Church Publishing, 2006

Amazing Volume!
This book should be in every Episcopalian's library. The resources it provides for parishes and for personal devotions are exceptional. The updated Church Kalendar has some great new additions, including a few noted Roman Catholic (esp. St. Ignatius of Loyola - July 31) and Eastern Orthodox (esp. St. Tikhon - April 7). Great Anglican additions are St C.S. Lewis (Nov 22), the Feast of the ...

Welcome To The Book Of Common Prayer2 reviews
Vicki K. Black

Morehouse Publishing, 2005

A welcome volume
The Book of Common Prayer is one of those books that helps shape my life and spirituality. I was once asked to list books that have most influenced my life, vocational discernment and spirituality - I had a list of important books I'd read, but I also inserted a subset of books that continue to be of importance on a regular basis; in this small collection of books, the Book of Common Prayer ...

The Book of Common Prayer1 review

Church Hymnal Corporation, 2001

Good purchase & service, but . . .
Good quality paper and binding, as expected. No hassle service from Amazon, as expected. One small disappointment: I wish I had known the size of the version of the BCP; it was larger than I thought it would be. I probably would have ordered the "pocket" smaller edition.

Welcome to Sunday: An Introduction to Worship in the Episcopal Church4 reviews
Christopher L. Webber

Morehouse Publishing, 2002

Great Introduction to Sunday
This book serves as a short introduction to the Episcopal Church's Sunday service. As a newcomer to the church, this book helped me understand "what was happening" during Sunday Eucharist (communion). The author writes with sensitivity and openness. I'd also recommend "Welcome to the Episcopal Church" (same author) as an excellent more general introduction to the church's history, beliefs, and ...

Commentary on the American Prayer Book6 reviews
Marion J. Hatchett

HarperOne, 1995

Why does it say that?
Many people who study the Bible are familiar with the ways that commentaries work - some are line by line, some are passage by passage; some commentaries focus on particular elements (historical, linguistic, etc.) and others try to be general in approach. Marion Hatchett's book, 'Commentary on the American Prayer Book', is a general commentary that will seem at home to such readers as are ...

The Seeds of Heaven: Sermons on the Gospel of Matthew6 reviews
Barbara Brown Taylor

Westminster, 2004

Taylor is an outstanding writer
I purchased the book to be used in an adult church education class. The volume is a collection of sermons based on the Gospel of Matthew. They are scholarly, yet easy to read. Taylor provides some fresh interpretation to this beloved old gospel. Her ideas make for lively in-class discussion. I recommend her work very highly.

A User's Guide to the Book of Common Prayer: Morning And Evening Prayer (User's Guide to the Book of Common ...3 reviews
Christopher L. Webber

Morehouse Publishing, 2005

Be at peace with morning prayer
As a newcomer to leading Morning Prayer I found this book invaluable in developing the understanding and confidence that I needed. During Lent I purchased multiple copies of this for my parish so that others would also feel empowered to lead morning or evening prayer. Fr. Webber concisely frames Morning Prayer in its historical context and provides valuable insights though the use of running ...

My Faith, My Life: A Teen's Guide to the Episcopal Church5 reviews
Jenifer Gamber

Morehouse Publishing, 2006

An Excellent Guide - and not just for teens
I bought this book for my 16 year old Godson. Kevin has spiritual depth, has been steadily involved with the Episcopal Church for about five years, and has a jumble of knowledge about the Church. My Faith, My Life is just right for Kevin. It sorts out the Christian faith, as understood in the Episcopal Church, the role of Scripture, the centrality of the Trinity for Episcopalians, the history ...

Wonder, Love, and Praise: A Supplement to the Hymnal 19821 review

Church Publishing, 2001

If you're a Christian singer, you delight in this supplement
If you haven't had a chance to hear the wonderful music in this supplement, you are in for a treat. Recently, the Nativity choir joined with other local Episcopal parishes for a sing-through of many of the songs in the supplement. What a wonderful job the committee has done in providing new praise music and some traditional overlooked spiritual gems. If you are a Christian singer, you won't want ...

Dictionary for Episcopalians9 reviews
John N. Wall

Cowley Publications, 2000

Quick! What's a "dossal"?
On the surface of things, there might seem something a bit precious about a dictionary that explains "churchy" terms. It smacks of private language and esoteric, self-enclosed culture--two characteristics frequently ascribed to the Episcopal Church. But in fact John Wall's (revised & expanded) dictionary is a gem for at least three reasons. First, it helps the average Episcopalian to get in ...

Jesus for the Non-Religious64 reviews
John Shelby Spong

HarperOne, 2007

Way to Go!
Unlike the title suggests, I do consider myself a religious persion. In fact, I am a teacher of theology to people of all ages, but mostly teens. I have also been on a life-long search for the Jesus/God of my imagination, and so, I love to look in all the unlikely places. This book has put much of my search into words and on paper. It is thought provoking and courageous and rattles a lot of ...
