Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology: Expanded Second Edition45 reviews
Ayn Rand

Plume, 1990

Read these reviews carefully
So many of these reviews complain that 'Ms. Rand claims that she has solved the problem of universals, but universals are a problem of metaphysics, not epistimology' Imagine a group of doctors standing around a patient, trying to figure out what is wrong with the patients nose, because he has complained that he has a problem breathing. They've examined his nose, looked up inside it, probed ...

Epistemology: An Anthology (Blackwell Philosophy Anthologies)1 review

Wiley-Blackwell, 2008

WOW!
This stunning collection puts the competition far enough in the shade as to almost disappear. Such venerable standards as Bernecker and Dretske's "Knowledge" are simply rendered obsolete by this comprehensive, deeply thought, and far-reaching tome. If you are in any way involved in The Philosophic Project or a philosophic project, this massive volume is sine qua non.

Epistemology (Foundations of Philosophy)2 reviews
Richard Feldman

Prentice Hall, 2002

A comprehensive introduction to the theory of knowledge
Richard Feldmans 'Epistemology' is nothing less than excellent. I am missing the sixth star or an extra crown for the rating. Starting from the important epistemological questions Feldman gets to The Standard View. 1. We know a large variety of things in many different categories. 2. Our primary sources of knowledge are perception, memory, testimony, etc. Now the author develops the ...

Epistemology of the Closet10 reviews
Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick

University of California Press, 2008

...Theory should always be so good
According to the writer Avital Ronell, in his youth Kant wanted to be a poet. Fortunately for us, perhaps, he turned to philosophy instead. Through this turn Kant ended up setting the standard towards which most academics currently strive: a zero-degree style (which Lyotard both attempts to mime and identifies as naive in the preface to The Differend). What this does, essentially, is provide ...

The Blackwell Guide to Epistemology (Blackwell Philosophy Guides)1 review

Wiley-Blackwell, 1999

Reasonably well balanced textbook
A reasonably well balanced textbook containing 17 articles and an introduction from the editor. Editors have done a good job, as most the authors of articles have actually read other articles and thus they actually complement each other -- thing rarely seen in this kind of publications. Of course some articles are better than others, but most of them stay rather well on the subject and are well ...

Epistemology: An Anthology (Blackwell Philosophy Anthologies)3 reviews

Wiley-Blackwell, 2000

Excellent Anthology of Contemporary Epistemology
I've already reviewed the Kim and Sosa anthology in contemporary metaphysics, and I have much the same verdict on their anthology in contemporary epistemology: this, to the best of my knowledge, is the single best anthology of contemporary philosophical work in this area for advanced students of philosophy. (That, of course, isn't to say that there isn't a better anthology in epistemology; ...

Epistemology: A Contemporary Introduction to the Theory of Knowledge (Routledge Contemporaryintroductions to ...7 reviews
Robert Audi

Routledge, 2002

Spinach
The words 'rigorous' and 'comprehensive' best describe Robert Audi's introduction to the theory of knowledge. Without the navel-gazing that characterize many philosophical introductions, Audi adheres to the meat and potatoes of the subject matter. Audi makes many well-justified and useful distinctions using a cold, serious writing style. Everything is dry; everything is documented. Moreover, this ...

Contemporary Debates in Epistemology (Contemporary Debates in Philosophy)2 reviews

Wiley-Blackwell, 2005

The Currents in Analytic Epistemology
This book will definitely give one a good idea as to what the current debates in contemporary analytic epistemology are. Basic introductions to the topics debated are not always given, so it might be best to pair this book with a text that provides basic information about the major topics and themes in epistemology. Some of the pairings in this book are fantastic (I particularly enjoyed ...

Problems of Knowledge: A Critical Introduction to Epistemology5 reviews
Michael Williams

Oxford University Press, USA, 2001

Epistemological optimism critically defended.
The subtitle, "a critical introduction to epistemology," is precisely descriptive of this volume. I'd say it is somewhat beyond an introduction -- and it is nothing if not critical (but of course any serious consideration of epistemology must be). The discourse throughout tackles the problem of skepticism, both classical (Agrippan) and modern (Cartesian). As Williams states in the introduction, ...

Epistemology: Becoming Intellectually Virtuous (Contours of Christian Philosophy)6 reviews
W. Jay Wood

InterVarsity Press, 1998

Obtain truth by being truthful
A seminary professor recommended this book to me as a good introduction to the field of epistemology. I have a background in apologetics, but limited exposure to philosophy. This book by Wood delivers the philosophical subject of epistemology in a way I think serious lay students can grasp and enjoy, especially those interested in Christian philosophy. Throughout the book, Wood makes it ...

Contemporary Perspectives on Religious Epistemology2 reviews
R. Douglas Geivett, Brendan Sweetman

Oxford University Press, USA, 1993

A Solid Collection of Scholars
This collection is a who's who of scholars who are dealing with the philosophical study of epistemology (the study of knowledge). The book is divided into 6 (VI) different sections which include Atheism (Antony Flew, Michael Martin, William L. Rowe, etc), Wittgensteinian Fideism (Norman Malcolm, Kai Nielsen, etc), Reformed Epistemology (Alvin Plantinga, Nicholas Wolterstorff, etc), Natural ...

Thinking about Android Epistemology (AAAI Press Copublications)3 reviews

AAAI Press, 2006

Stimulating and Entertaining Collection of Reads
Android Epistemology, as defined in this book, seeks to answer fundamental questions about the nature of Artificially Intelligent machines. The theme of the book, "thinking about" machine intelligence, unfolds in a set of often-entertaining essays by philosophers, cognitive scientists and computer scientists. The topics explored here are quite diverse, and are typically presented in an informal, ...

Epistemology: Contemporary Readings (Routledge Contemporary Readings in Philosophy)2 reviews
Michael Huemer

Routledge, 2002

Excellent Anthology of Epistemology and Its History
Huemer's anthology is intended to complement Robert Audi's introduction to the epistemology in the Routledge Contemporary Introductions to Philosophy series. And, as one would expect, it is an ideal text to be read in conjunction with Audi's book. Almost all the subjects discussed in that book--the exceptions being moral and religious knowledge--are given corresponding sections in this ...

The Concept of Model: An Introduction to the Materialist Epistemology of Mathematics (Transmission)
Alain Badiou

re.press, 2007

The Concept of Model is the first of Alain Badiou's early books to be translated fully into English. With this publication English readers finally have access to a crucial work by one of the world's greatest living philosophers. Written on the eve of the events of May 1968, The Concept of Model provides a solid mathematical basis for a rationalist materialism. Badiou's concept of model distinguishes itself from both logical positivism and ...

Epistemology: The Big Questions (Philosophy: The Big Questions)1 review

Wiley-Blackwell, 1991

Ok, But, Too Much Contemporary Western Feminism
This text edited by Linda Alcoff is an instalment in The Big Question series. I offer the following thoughts for potential readers. I am a fan of philosophical collections and have enjoyed other instalments in the Big Questions series (Metaphysics and Philosophy of Religion). These types of anthologies can provide a valuable service by making a range of diverse articles readily accessible to ...

A Companion to Epistemology (Blackwell Companions to Philosophy)4 reviews
Jonathan Dancy

Blackwell Publishers, 2008

Excellent Reference Resource for Philosophy
This is yet another excellent "Companion" book in the Blackwell Series. The text is an A to Z companion to the study of how we know what we know (epistemology). It covers ideas of individual philosophers, movements, terms, and genres. For a reference work on the study of epistemology I know of no better text. Moreover, this text is a wonderful tool for the student and the professional alike. Some ...

Epistemology: The Justification of Belief (Contours of Christian Philosophy)1 review
David L. Wolfe

InterVarsity Press, 1983

A good, short introduction
This is a short but good introduction to how we know that something is true. It is written by a Christian and he uses his Christian beliefs to illustrate his approach but the issues he addresses are universal. The basic idea is that everyone must construct a holistic worldview that makes sense in light of logic, experience, etc. I reccommend this as a solid introduction to this area.
