Essentials of Writing Biomedical Research Papers8 reviews
Mimi Zeiger

McGraw-Hill Professional, 1999

Very good book, examples used bit too technical
Very good book for beginners and experienced researchers! I haven't come across any other book that actually describes how you should write a biomedical paper. The only critique is that the examples used are too technical for non-biomedical researchers, this makes it hard to understand the examples. But even if you do not have a biomedical background you will learn a lot from this book.

A Testament of Hope : The Essential Writings and Speeches of Martin Luther King, Jr.14 reviews
Martin Luther King, James M. Washington, 1990

"There are just laws and there are unjust laws..." *
Yesterday, the 40th anniversary of MLK's assassination, I spent the better part of the day thumbing through A Testment of Hope. The book is an old friend of mine. I've read and reread it for nearly twenty years now, both privately and with students in at least a dozen classes. What I like so much about editor James Washington's collection is its comprehensiveness. In a single volume, one ...

Mr. Bennett leaves no stone unturned here...he takes readers through each step of writing a resume so diligently that I feel as if he has practically re-written my resume himself! A Testament to Freedom: Essential Writings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The7 reviews
Dietrich Bonhoeffer

HarperOne, 1995

powerful and compelling
Mr. Dietrich Bonhoeffer makes my list of most interesting people of the 20th century and he is certainly one of the most influencial of Christian writers. His faith, dedication to freedom, and vision for humanity is as profound as it is earnest. Raised as a Lutheran, I had always heard of Bonhoeffer, but never explored his literature. I have a German background, my mum was a German teacher, ...

The Essential Husserl: Basic Writings in Transcendental Phenomenology (Studies in Continental Thought)7 reviews
Edmund Husserl, Donn Welton

Indiana University Press, 1999

A good book, but not an introduction
This work is better appreciated after one has gained some introduction to HUsserl. I suggest starting off with the Cartesian Meditations, and trying to find a good commentary on them. UNDERSTANDING PHENOMENOLOGY is a fantastic book, albeit unavailable.

Common Sense, The Rights of Man and Other Essential Writings of Thomas Paine (Signet Classics)21 reviews
Thomas Paine

Signet Classics, 2003

Freedom and Rights of man
I have read much on the history of our beautiful country and also of other countries as well. This book by Thomas Paine "COMMON SENSE AND THE RIGHTS OF MAN" is an extraordinary out line of how man should form his government and live in harmony with his fellow man in this world. Thomas Paine, one of our founding fathers, is a man that saw the rights of man being trampled on by England. His ...

Jim Church's Essential Guide to Composition: A Simplified Approach to Taking Better Underwater Pictures8 reviews
Jim Church

Aqua Quest Publications, Inc., 1998

"Something Here for Everyone"
People come to photography by many strange and varied routes and my own is as different as the next - though I shall not bore you with that particular story here. Suffice to say that, my first photograph was published in 1974, my first underwater photograph in 1980 and, right at this time, my work has appeared (somewhere) every month since December 1998, I am in the process of completing my ...

Songwriting: Essential Guide to Rhyming: A Step-by-Step Guide to Better Rhyming and Lyrics (Songwriting ...9 reviews
Pat Pattison

Berklee Press, 1991

Songwriting: Essential Guide to Rhyming
I happened to mention to a couple of friends of mine that I was reviewing a book on rhyming this month and one of them said, " What a dumb thing to write a book about, dude, I mean, a word either rhymes with another word or it doesn't...so you don't need a whole book for that, duh!?!" My other friend was shaking his head in affirmation of this noble theory. This confirms that I really need to do ...

One: Essential Writings on Nonduality15 reviews
Jerry Katz

Sentient Publications, 2007

Finally! A Book I Can Give to Friends that ask, "What...?" A++
I am grateful to Jerry Katz for offering us this superb introduction and explication on the meaning, function, and essence of Nonduality. In the past, when friends or acquaintances asked me to recommend a book on this marvelous, but sometimes difficult subject, I was forced to hand them a half-dozen books and point out the pertinent sections--No more! Mr. Katz's lovely book brings all the ...

Essentials of Business Communication8 reviews
Mary Ellen Guffey

Thomson South-Western, 1995

Best Text for Learning Communication Skills
I am an instructor for a local college. I selected the Essntials of Business Communication as the textbook for my Business Communications course after working with it in a previous class. It is the best organized text I have found with step by step instructions for students to readily grasp the techniques used in modern business documents. The book covers e-mails, memos, a variety of business ...

The Essential Holmes: Selections from the Letters, Speeches, Judicial Opinions, and Other Writings of Oliver ...4 reviews
Oliver Wendell Holmes

University Of Chicago Press, 1992

Genius!
Posner, who is arguably today's most influential legal thinker, has put together an invaluable collection of Justice Holmes' most memorable writings. The combo of Posner selecting Holmes is powerful: the selections invariably present the brilliant Holmes on timeless legal topics. So much brain power is frightening, and we are lucky to be able to get it all in one fairly short book. All the more ...

If you write, here's an inexpensive secret weapon
This one's for everyone - fiction and non-fiction. You pick up this slim paperback, rifle the pages and bang! A Manual of Writer's Tricks gives you ammunition to instantly liven your writing. My copy is well-highlighted. The foreword is written by literary agent Sheree Bykofsky who once sent me a delightful rejection letter. Essential Principles for Fundraising Success: An Answer Manual for the Everyday Challenges of Raising Money5 reviews
G. Douglass Alexander, Kristina J. Carlson

Jossey-Bass, 2005

Best in Class for Board, Staff, and Those Who Do
Although others will be doing fund-raising for Earth Intelligence Network, to fill in whatever our parent sponsor cannot provide, I found this book to be extraordinarly useful to me, so that I could understand in detail what is expected and required. Bottom line: Fund-raising is a *professional* *year-long* orchestrated, documented *demanding* endeavor. It is neither easy nor an ...

The Essential Tillich: An Anthology of the Writings of Paul Tillich4 reviews
Paul Tillich

Collier Books, 1988

Premium Timeless Existential Theology
Having studied religious/philosophical discourse for decades, I was electrified intellectually and spiritually by the brilliance of existential thought in every selection in this anthology! Not for casual review or the beginning contemplative, the demand for a complex conceptual imagination, a consuming passion for Being, and plasticity of one's most cherished personal beliefs is required. ...

250 Essential Kanji for Everyday Use, Volume 24 reviews
University of Tokyo Kanji Text Research Group

Tuttle Publishing, 1998

This is the best book I have come across for kanji
I have tried a number of books for learning kanji, but this one is the most effective that I have used so far. It is good because it provides real-life examples of the very kanji that you are learning, such as housing applications, grocery store listings, and Japanese computer menus. I would highly recommend this book, along with Vol. 1.

The Solzhenitsyn Reader: New and Essential Writings, 1947-20055 reviews

Intercollegiate Studies Institute, 2006

Major Step Forward for English Readers
This set is a major step forward to the presentation and understanding of Solzhenitsyn to English speaking readers. It is a process that will still take years, but I suspect this volume will be pivotal. In the early days, the writer's books were rushed into print with so-so or even poor translations because of their timelineness and importance. His exile to USA happened at the crest of his ...

Writing Essentials: Raising Expectations and Results While Simplifying Teaching7 reviews
Regie Routman

Heinemann, 2004

Content, NOT conventions!
I purchased this book a few months ago as a textbook requirement for a graduate course I took. Little did I know that I would end up dog-earing practically every page! Regie's approach to teaching writing resounded with me on so many levels. As a kindergarten teacher coming off her first year in a classroom, I had felt a nagging dissatisfaction with our school's packaged writing "program", but ...

Mark Twain A to Z: The Essential Reference to His Life and Writings (Literary A to Z)5 reviews
R. Kent Rasmussen

Facts on File, 1995

Excellent reference to Twain and his world!
Elvis, the Beatles and Marilyn Monroe have received the A to Z treatment in which every aspect of their lives and works have been reordered alphabetically, so it was only a matter of time that the mania would spread to lesser figures, in this case Mark Twain, James Joyce and Virginia Woolf. This series of three books, originally published by Facts On File and now updated and reprinted by ...
