Essentials of Criminal Justice2 reviews
Larry J. Siegel, Joseph J. Senna

Wadsworth Publishing, 2006

Great intro material.
Forget what other people are saying. This book is meant to give the reader an introduction to the field of criminal justice. I don't know what the other readers were expecting. If they want more depth just buy a specialized book on criminology. This book is great if you are looking for something to guide you in the field, or if you take an intro class in college or high school.

Essentials of Sociology: A Down-to-Earth Approach (7th Edition) (MySocLab Series)19 reviews
James M. Henslin

Allyn & Bacon, 2006

Sociology review
I would like everyone to know that for a class that calls for the latest edition, which is usually hundreds of dollars, they can easily get an A with an older edition. I have proved it with this book. Even though the teacher said I would have a hard time I found everything where it was supposed to be maybe a page or two off but it was all there. This is a great book even if you are not taking a ...

White Privilege: Essential Readings on the Other Side of Racism13 reviews
Paula S. Rothenberg

Worth Publishers, 2004

Excellent book!
This book is highly readable and the analysis is very good. The only reason people would be reacting so negatively is if they have an investment in perpetuating racism. If you do not, then you will appreciate this book and its contribution to helping us understand the dynamics of privilege and how we can unconsciously fuel racism. The first step to changing something is understanding it. ...

A Testament of Hope: The Essential Writings and Speeches of Martin Luther King, Jr.14 reviews
Martin Luther King

HarperOne, 1990

"There are just laws and there are unjust laws..." *
Yesterday, the 40th anniversary of MLK's assassination, I spent the better part of the day thumbing through A Testment of Hope. The book is an old friend of mine. I've read and reread it for nearly twenty years now, both privately and with students in at least a dozen classes. What I like so much about editor James Washington's collection is its comprehensiveness. In a single volume, one ...

Essentials of Sociology2 reviews
David B. Brinkerhoff, Lynn K. White, ...

Wadsworth Publishing, 2007

previous edition much better
The new addition by Brinkerhoff et. al., though it provides the basics for teaching introduction to Sociology and by far one of the best texts available, is more efficient, but sacrifices much needed information. The recent edition deletes a chapter and attempts to incorparate issues of poverty and inequality in the other chapters, but this really needs to be its own chapter, so I would ...

Sociology Now: The Essentials (with MySocLab Student Access Code Card) (Essentials (Prentice Hall))1 review
Michael S. Kimmel, Amy Aronson

Allyn & Bacon, 2008

Very Biased
I am a college student in Nevada and I have this book as the main text for my sociology class. Although this book is colorful, up-to-date, and slightly entertaining, it suffers from rank biases. The authors, especially Dr. Michael Kimmel, are very feminist, hate the so-called "heterosexual, white male" among other things and seem to have a problem with presenting sociology without an implicit ...

Understanding Research Methods: An Overview of the Essentials5 reviews
Mildred L. Patten

Pyrczak Publishing, 2007

Exactly what it claims to be
I am a master's student taking a course in research methods, and this was the first book of the semester. If you want an in-depth examination of research methods, no, this is not what you're looking for. But it did a great job of kicking off this course, which is designed for administrators who will more often be consumers of research than in-depth researchers themselves. It says it is "An ...

Essential Works of Lenin: "What Is to Be Done?" and Other Writings13 reviews
Vladimir Ilyich Lenin

Dover Publications, 1987

Lenin at his best
This book, along with "The Revolution Betrayed" by Trotsky is the best repudiation yet of the Big Lie of the 20th Century that Stalinism equals Socialism. Stalin was one of socialism's great ENEMIES of the 20th century and proved it time and time again (first with the liquidation of 90% of all the original Bolshevik revolutionaries -- Imagine someone claming to uphold the ideas of the American ...
