Fanciful But Interesting
Like another reviewer, when I first heard of this books I thought it was an alternate history. But like the author's previous book, 1421, it's a rather fanciful conclusion held together by a string of clever conjecture that falls about upon close examination. For one thing, the author has his Chinese fleet transitioning from the Red Sea to the Medterranean via the Red Sea to Nile canal built by ...

Undaunted Courage
I will keep it simple. Next to the Holy Bible ~ best book I ever read. I have since then read several of Stephen Ambrose's books and highly recommend them. He and his family put many years of research in before writing any book. I have travelled across the country all the way to Cape Disapportment as a result of reading the book and following the trail. Everything Mr. Ambrose claimed in the ...

Impossible is relative
As he did in "Visions," "Hyperspace," and "Beyond Einstein," Professor Michio Kaku has again penned a gem. Eminently readable, and as always packed full of related facts, this logically guided but wide-eyed romp across the terrain of the impossible, near-impossible and the far-fetched impossible, contains a veritable boutique of novel and leading-edge ideas. But that is not all. He also ...

Interesting
I'd like to know the backgrounds of previous reviewers, both postive vs. negative. Having a science background and 9 years of college taught me how to sift through piles of material and find a few pearls. I found a few here, although I cannot agree with all that is said--perhaps due to a lack of technical background in photographic analysis? While I agree with a lot of the history contained ...

My Son's Favorite Book
My six year old son read this book every night before bed (with my help) with an enthusiasm that he's never had for any other book. I was actually looking forward to each new chapter myself. Having read A Brief History and several other similar books, I thought this book did an amazing job at explaining the mechanics of black holes and the formation of the universe to young minds. (...and in a ...

"The Thing" goes Victorian
Dan Simmon's "The Terror" is to the Franklin Expedition what "Pan's Labyrinth" is to Franco's Spain. That is to say, the book is as much a mix of history, horror and fantasy as Del Toro's film is, and achieves this pastiche with an equal level of success. The premise is simple; Simmons imagines the doomed expedition, trapped not only by the elements of the Arctic, but by something more elemental, ...

great vacation reading
I read this while on vacation in Florida, overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. The rain has been torrential. It took little imagination to see myself in a dugout with Roosevelt. A great read in any location.

The Reality of Christian Fellowship
This is a great little book, a classic that all Christians should read. At roughly 128 pages, this is a short treatise on Christian community that is very accessible. In the first chapter of this book Bonhoeffer presents his understanding of the reality of Christian community. Bonhoeffer's basic claim is that Christian community is a reality, both in the mundane realm and in the spiritual ...

Into the Wild and the heart of this lovely soul
This is a book about a young man going on a vision quest. Fate dealt him a horrible hand. He is a wonderful soul caught in the wilds of Alaska with no way to get out. Yes he was careless. He was young and full of life, he was taken too soon. When you read about him and see those pictures you realize what a wonderful soul he was. This book is very worthwhile. The movie is worth seeing too. ...

It's a BIG book that worths every penny. The pictures are great, some of them are well known, some where not that widely published before but the fun of having all of them in one big book is not spoiled. It's a great book even if you're not a fan of space exploration. From the cover to the last page, this book offers unique views of earth, space, moon and mankind, describing in few words and lot ...

textbooks can be good
I really wasn't looking forward to yet another psychology text, but this one is actually enjoyable. The author has managed to pare down each study to the essentials and doesn't waste a ton of space trying to entertain the reader. I would recommend it for anyone interested in how the mind works, and the information that has made our understanding greater.

Excellent book. This should be publicized more by the media. It should also be recognized by the academic community. There is such a preponderance of supporting material that it is incontrovertible. It should be made part of the historical record in text books.

"What exactly is a doll?"
This beautiful book will especialy appeal to three classes of people: artists who make handmade dolls, amateurs who emulate them, and general readers like my wife and me who collect them. Helen Bullard, who was instrumental in popularizing the art form in the US described these dolls in 1983: "Collections of mass-produced dolls, originally made for children to play with, are everywhere. Where Did We Come From? Where Are We Going?
Because Arthur C. Clarke recently died I decided to reread his classic novel, 2001: A Space Odyssey. Some people say that the major knock against science fiction is that it's necessarily dated soon after written because of the progress of society and technology. While this may be true of many stories, 2001 is timeless. It's hopeful, it's beautiful and it's filled with themes that speak to ...

a (mercifully) non-PC view of Captain Cook
In Blue Latitudes journalist Tony Horwitz follows in the footsteps of Captain Cook, beginning with a week working as a member of the crew on board a replica of Cook's ship Endeavor. I'd always thought of Cook as this stereotypical British officer, all his buttons properly polished and looking down a very long nose at all these dreadful loincloth-clad natives. In fact, Cook was born in a pigsty, ...
