The Best
Visually intoxicating! You can learn the secrets of the universe in this one volume. I have numerous DK published books all of which are excellent. However, this is the paragon that all the other books are judged by. Simply, it is the best book that they have ever published. It should be the standard text book for astronomy classes!

Simply inspiring
If you think you have it tough, pick up Miracles in the Andes. It is simply one of the most inspiring books you will ever read. It moves along very quickly. And as good as Alive is, Miracle in the Andes is even more enjoyable and enlightening because it reaches into one man's mind and heart in exploring those hard-to-define characteristics that some people have in survival situations. That said, ...

An emotional and inspiring autobiography....
I have read "A Journey To Hell And Back" by Charlotte Russell-Johnson, and found it to be a most inspiring book, and very relevant to many young women of today, who are in need of the kind of guidance and insight offered by this book. I have also had the pleasure of meeting Charlotte Russell Johnson, and from my two encounters with her, I believe her to be as genuine as her personal testimony. ...

An amazing story of a real "Survivor"
No video cameras and immunity for Tom Neale, he did the real deal all by himself for years on a deserted atoll. A fascinating story of what it takes to survive and a great character study of the type of person who can/would do it. Tom lived the lazy island life but wasn't satisfied and finally went out to pull a Robinson Crusoe (at the age of 50!). And this was in the 50s. He had no ...

Fascinating Story, Can't Stop Talking, Use Google Earth!
I read books in a wide variety of topics. I decided to read about Lewis and Clark because I felt I just did not know enough about it and I felt that I should. When I received the book, I opened it and was fearful that I made a mistake because it was made up of journal entries, day by day in Lewis and Clark's own words. I started reading and I found myself immmediately engrossed in the story. I ...

A perfect fit!
This is our family's first year homeschooling all 3 children (ages range from 4-9) and I was SO thrilled to have found such a wonderful book to teach (and truly immerse) our kids in God's creation! Jeannie Fulbright doesn't just teach facts with these books - her approach includes total immersion into the where and how and why that fill my kid's need to know and understand God in each moment, in ...

Worth the money
I was so impressed by this book when I checked it out from the library I realized I had to have a copy of my own for those times when problems crop up that drive me toward the deep end. This book does what it claims. Though it won't answer all of your problems (what book would), it's easy to understand and can provide simple solutions to what seem like complex problems. It also gives the reader ...

`Difficulties do not terrify'
This is a fascinating story of an ambitious program of exploration launched by John Barrow, Second Secretary to the Admiralty in 1816. Between 1816 and 1845 `Barrow's Boys' worked - sometimes with each other and sometimes against each other - to fill in some of the blank spaces around the globe. Some of the questions they set out to answer: What was at the North Pole? Was there a ...

I can't believe she did the whole thing!
I am a big fan of stories of artic adventure, and this is one of the best. In this day of snow mobiles and ATVs, we have a woman at 50 -- author Helen Thayer -- setting out to walk to the magnectic north pole, pulling her own sled and accompanied by an Inuit dog she had only known for a couple of days. On her first day out, she suffers such terrible frostbite of her fingers they become almost ...

High Spirits: A Tale of Ghostly Rapping and Romance

Better than history!
High Spirits: A Tale of Ghostly Rapping and Romance is a novelistic treatment of a real incident from American history, the story of the Fox sisters, whose childish pranks of communicating with the departed were taken seriously first by family members, then neighbors, and then the community, ultimately growing into a genuine phenomenon. The resulting movement, known as spiritualism, became quite ...

I felt like I was in the arctic with the main character!
I had never really read anything like this book before, but for some reason the story's unique setting, the Arctic, drew me in. The main character is so endearing, hard-working, honest, and lovable that you cheer for him throughout all his challenges and problems. He is a good example of how we could all learn from other cultures with respect and compassion. I was sad when I had finished because ...

Amazing and Inspiring
I remember seeing the WTC towers being built, still partly framed in steel, as a child in the late 1960's. I also remember a snippet of this event in the news in the 70s. But, it was (I think) Ken Burns' American Stories on TV that reminded me of it and really gave it perspective that blew my mind as to how unbelievable an event it was. To me, it wason a scale of things like landing on the ...

Fun and light hearted view from Dora's perspective how fun and important it is to visit a dentist. This book familiarizes young ones with the experience of visiting the dentist, from the tools used to details of the entire examination. My son likes the story and asks me to read it often.

A National Treasure
This is truly a treasure. Even if you don't like history, you will find yourself wanting to know more after reading this book. It would be a great read, side by side, in an American history class. Students reading about the lives of people and how they were affected by each of those early events in our history would surely enjoy the class a lot more. I wish it was printed in hardcover or large ...
