Insightful, well researched, and disturbing
In "The two Faces of Islam", Stephen Schwartz locates the primary source of fanatically intolerant Islam in the world today, finding its origin in the Wahhabi denomination, which is the official religion of Saudi-Arabia. This version of Islam, Schwartz argues, was imposed on Arabia by naked force, and maintains its power by official suppression of all other Islamic traditions. Then, in recent ...

SWAT made simple
Very simple yet elaborate enough to get some depth of SWAT. I'm not a law enforcer but just wanted to know more about SWAT. This book helped me a lot understand many aspects of SWAT such as Hostage Negotiations, Site Assault, Perimeters and Security, Team Work, etc. Very good read, and it has some useful pictures too.
The Faces of Terrorism: Social and Psychological Dimensions (Science Essentials)
Neil J. Smelser
Princeton University Press

Terrorism is the most clear and present danger we confront today, yet no phenomenon is more poorly understood by policymakers, the media, and the general public. The Faces of Terrorism is the first serious interdisciplinary examination of terrorism in all its facets. What gives rise to it, who are its proponents and how do they think, and how--and why--does it work? Neil Smelser begins by tackling the fundamental problem of defining what ...

Thinking About the Unthinkable
Ferguson and Potter, writing on behalf of the Center for Non Proliferation Studies, have written an easy to read primer on the faces of Nuclear Terrorism. The authors lead the reader through the most likely threats one small step at a time with great patience. If there is one lesson from the past two decades of post cold war terrorism ( it has been 10 years since Bin Laden declared war) it ...

Inquisitive Minds
Jim Sciutto isn't one of those typical Network Television reporters who dashes around war zones pretending to get shot at constantly and know more than the rest of us. He is a even-handed student of the Islamic world, attempting in his own humble way to understand the ire and distrust that exists therein. I expect the negative reviewers, of whom there are few here, have not spent time in ...

The Two Faces Of The Book
At the risk of being repetitive, I too will comment on the fact that the title of the book and the dust jacket description seem to be two to three steps removed from the actual writings of the author. Now it could be that I had an unfair expectation, but I expected the book to focus more on how the military uses the new technology available to it to fight wars. I was looking for detailed ...

Moving book
I wrote the Kentucky story for this book, but I'd like to commend Rebecca Pepin and the other writers who contributed. I love what this book does for the families of the military men and women whose stories are depicted inside, and my own personal experience was very enriching for me personally. "Getting to know" DeShon Otey through his family was one of the most moving experiences I've ever had. ...

Featured in Mr. Shambroom's book
I am one of the few people who are featured in Mr. Shambroom's book. It was an honor to have him among us as we performed our daily duties. We are not people of evil, we are all Americans bent on protecting our homeland from all who wish to destroy her. This is a good book. It details our daily life. No one loves nuclear weapons. Not even us who work with them. But the cat is out of the bag and ...

Negotiating Under Fire explores how real-time and severe security crises between two nations impact diplomatic initiatives between those countries. Using the Baruch Goldstein Hebron massacre of 1994, the Nachshon Wachsman kidnapping and execution of 1994, and the nine-day string of suicide bus bombings carried out in Israel in March 1996 as case studies to examine the impact of terrorism on negotiations over Oslo II (the Gaza-Jericho Agreement), ...

Richard Alan White's account of the heroic Paraguayan physician Joel Filartega is a is an extremely captivating and well written account of fact that reads like the best of fiction. The story documents the case that affirmed that the US court system can protect aliens who are victims of human rights abuses that occur in other countries and can not be fairly adjudicated. I picked up this paperback and couldn't put it down. I even had my wife read it just so she would know the slime that was out there. I'm not someone that wants to draw, I couldn't draw a matchstick person, but I read a lot of true crime and Lois put together a large amount of infomation in that area. She told it in a great manner. I highly recommend this book. Mick Addington

This timely book examines the new style of terrorism by small groups, cults, even individuals with access to weapons of mass destruction. These groups and individuals typified by, for example, the Aum cult in Tokyo or the action of Timothy McVeigh in the USA, are more difficult to control than even small disaffected groups with political aims. The events surrounding Usamah bin-Laden are a clear indication of the significance and relevance of the ...
