The Janissary Tree: A Novel41 reviews
Jason Goodwin

Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2006

Introducing Yashim!!!
What a lovely character he is! Goodwin is a fine writer, a historian of great caliber and is just top-notch in this first offering. This book is a must - read! There isn't a single page in the book where you feel bored or want to skip a page or two. I think that's a great achievement. I will read Bellini Card later since it is bit expensive, meanwhile I will be starting to read Boris Akunin who ...

The Snake Stone: A Novel9 reviews
Jason Goodwin

Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2007

Impressive
I liked it very much, very well crafted and beautifully written, Goodwin was able to bring Istanbul of 1830s into one's mind with amazing clarity. To me it is a cross between "The Name of the Rose" by Eco Umberto and "My Name is Red" by Orhan Pamuk. Ordered The Janissary Tree. Only complaint is that the book is too short.

The Nancy Drew Scrapbook: 60 Years of America's Favorite Teenage Sleuth7 reviews
Karen Plunkett-Powell

St. Martin's Press, 1993

Nancy Drew collectors MUST HAVE this book!
This was the best and most well-researched book I've ever read about Nancy Drew. Not only does Ms. Plunkett-Powell "introduce" us to the REAL Carolyn Keene -- Mildred Wirt Benson -- but she gives us a history of how the idea for Nancy Drew was born and some of the politics involved in it for Wirt when Stratmeyer died and his daughter, Harriet, took over everything and tried to control too much of ...

Death's Favorite Child (A Lizzie Stuart Mystery series)7 reviews
Frankie Y. Bailey

Overmountain Press, 2000

WOW!!
What a wonderful mystery. This one had me guessing to the very end. Not only does Frankie Bailey keep you guessing in "Death's Favorite Child," she also makes you beg for more at the end of the novel with three of her main characters at pivotal points in their lives. African-American crime professor, Lisabeth (Lizzie)Stuart is beginning a week-long vacation at a small bed and breakfast hotel in ...

The Secret Life of Lobsters: How Fishermen and Scientists Are Unraveling the Mysteries of Our Favorite ...37 reviews
Trevor Corson

Harper Perennial, 2005

Pass the Butter
I heard about this book on NPR, was interested, and promptly forgot about it for about a year before finding it on a random bookseller's table. I could not have been more pleased with Corson's book and have recommended it profusely. He weaves together two strands of lobster fandom: scientists attempting to figure out how lobsters tick and a small lobstering village in Maine more concerned with ...

Favorite Father Brown Stories (Dover Thrift Editions)4 reviews
G. K. Chesterton

Dover Publications, 1993

Collection of stories packed with meaning and literary power
After reading The Hammer of God, one of the Father Brown stories, I found myself both perplexed and enlightened. Chesterton is one of the few short story authors I have encountered that can consolidate a global message into a short parable. In the Father Brown stories, he uses his superb wit and literary elegance to send readers through innumerable epiphanies, usually with the aid of some very ...

History: Fiction or Science? (Chronology, No. 1)43 reviews
Anatoly Fomenko

Mithec, 2004

Pants on fire?
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is ...

lots of fun for girls

The Wise Guy Cookbook: My Favorite Recipes From My Life as a Goodfella to Cooking on the Run27 reviews
Henry Hill, Priscilla Davis, ..., 2002

Excellent
Im not a gourmet, and im about as far from Italian as you can get. I am however a huge fan of Italian cuisine and have sampled it coast to coast in many parts of the country (no im not talking about Olive Garden..im talking about Italian food..:)) Maybe its the satisfaction of creating ones own meal, or imagining what it would have been like to grow up in Brooklyn while the smell of mom's ...

Call of the London
Jack London was the most popular bestselling author of the early twentieth-century, with his harrowing tales of survival in the north. In "Favorite Novels and Stories," London's most popular and well-known works are brought together in a boxed set. "Call of the Wind" is a surprisingly touching novella, about a strong dog named Buck.
