Plumes: Ostrich Feathers, Jews, and a Lost World of Global Commerce Sarah Abrevaya Stein
Yale University Press, 2008
The thirst for exotic ornament among fashionable women in the metropoles of Europe and America prompted a bustling global trade in ostrich feathers that flourished from the 1880s until the First World War. When feathers fell out of fashion with consumers, the result was an economic catastrophe for many, a worldwide feather bust. In this remarkable book, Sarah Stein draws on rich archival materials to bring to light the prominent and varied roles ...

Grandma's Feather Bed, with Audio CD (John Denver Series) 10 reviews
Dawn Publications (CA), 2007
Great I bought this book thinking it was a read along book. It is just the song on the CD which is hard to follow for a 5 year old reading along. He does love the song and the book is beautiful and fun to look at. He had a fit of the giggles when we tried to turn the pages to keep up with the song, there is just too much to look at on each page to go so fast. We appreciate them seperately.

Birds of a Feather (Maisie Dobbs Mysteries) 41 reviews Jacqueline Winspear
Penguin (Non-Classics), 2005
Wonderful fun! I actually bought this book for my aunt, because I knew she would enjoy the charming Maisie Dobbs and the wonderful writing of the author. I look forward to the next Maisie and I will read it as slowly as the others, to savor the rich descriptions and characters. The descriptions of city and countryside settings and of time periods, as each book moves forward in time, is a door to the past for ...

Snowy Night with a Stranger 5 reviews Jane Feather, Sabrina Jeffries, ...
Pocket Star, 2008
Snow storms force together three unlikely couples in this Historical Christmas Romance anthology I admit I'm a sucker for a Christmas romance. And these three very enjoyable short stories (~130 pages each) more than satisfied my holiday historical romance craving. There is something magical about a romance when a twist of fate, such as a snowstorm, forces the heroine and heroine into each others company -two people who under normal circumstances would have never met. And results are a ...

Working Effectively with Legacy Code (Robert C. Martin Series) 23 reviews Michael Feathers
Prentice Hall PTR, 2004
Pleasant to read and extremely practical. I am an entry level software developer who has only been in the industry for a little over a year. While I was in college, I was always provided with very clean code bases to work with or analyze. I was in for a huge surprise when I entered the real world. The code I deal with every day at work is an extremely ugly mess. We have no automated tests. We are basically operating at CMMI level 0. ...

Feathers Brush My Heart: True Stories of Mothers Connecting with Their Daughters After Death 21 reviews Sinclair Browning

Most Wonder Book for Loss of Mother A friend told me to read this book shortly after I lost my dear mother to breast cancer. It is full of inspiring, wonderful true stories of women who lost their mothers and had signs of them being near them after passing. The most wonderful thing happened to me after I finished this book a couple of weeks after my mothers funeral. I was going to church every morning at 7 a.m. for mass every ...

Pigeon Feathers 11 reviews John Updike
Ballantine Books, 1996
Top of his craft I'm a budding short story writer, myself; and no course, no workshop, no amount of instruction can subsitute for the lessons one learns leafing through and ingesting these exquisite paragraphs of John Updike. I find myself, in this volume, more than other Updike works, reading and re-reading the prose, even emailing sections to friends. Like a fine restaurant I want to tell people about, like a ...

Of a Feather: A Brief History of American Birding 14 reviews Scott Weidensaul
Harvest Books, 2008
Birding and the responsibility for habitat preservation Scott Weidensaul, a natural born naturalist if there ever was one, has written a book that provides both the factual history of birding and the philosophical changes that have occurred in the field. FIrst, he explains the historical interest in birds as food sources and how this evolved into sport, and a fanatical period of decorations for women's hats. He describes early American naturalists, ...

Wonderfully absurd... I have never written a review before, but as this book is one of the funniest things I've ever stumbled upon... here goes. I decided to take a quick look through it on the drive home from the book store (I was'nt the one driving!) and within minutes I was laughing ...

Building a Straw Bale House: The Red Feather Construction Handbook 7 reviews Nathaniel Corum
Princeton Architectural Press, 2005
Inexpensive and Efficient Housing I first became aware of straw base houses when I visited friends who had built one high in the Colorado rockies. In spite of the bad winters in that location, they reported that they very rarely used any heating beyond opening the drapes on the south facing windows. I don't know what the R-value of a bale of straw might be, but it is high.
They also reported that in the few years they had ...
