Probably the best in the series, and I've read them all
When I read the first mystery in the series several years ago, I commented that although it was flawed in several ways, the author had great potential as a writer. She seems to have finally come into her own with this addition to the series. One of my problems was that the author did not seem to be taking sufficiently seriously how compromising the situation was for the main character, ...

A useful adjunct to the reference shelf
Occasionally , to write in rhyme becomes a passion of mine. Sometimes, although inspired An elusive word is required. Usually, this book is then consulted But cannot be blamed for what resulted. As it happens, I didn't refer to the Rhyming Dictionary to write this particular piece of doggerel. But a more serious attempt at versification would have had me browsing through the pages. ...

To Darkness And To Death
I only recently became acquainted with this author and absolutely love her books. I have read all that are available in paperback and will continue to look forward to reading future books. I got hooked on mysteries by reading Agatha Christie when I was young and this author's characters and plots remind me of Agatha. Great reading.

useful and fun resource
A proverb is a short saying used to illustrate a general truth, and this handy guide is quite useful and very entertaining. Proverbs are listed alphabetically, and each entry includes an explanation, an example from literature, origin, variants, cross references when appropriate, and a list of sayings with similar or opposite meanings. For example, the entry "neither a borrower nor a lender be" ...

George Mackay Brown: The Life by Maggie Fergusson
`George Mackay Brown: The Life' is compelling from the first word. It is a vivid, intelligent account of a complex man, beautifully written with a kind of passionate restraint and breathtaking honesty. The research is meticulous and the result full of integrity and insight - a remarkable achievement. Rooted in his island home, George Mackay Brown is often simplified, or pigeon-holed as some kind ...

Poignant Insights
The ancient observer's insights have stood the test of time. Some elements of human nature remain consistent regardless of the century or technology. Aristotle thought classification was important. In this work he sets forth a taxonomy for poetics. One of the more controversial statements he makes in this book is "poetry is both more philosophical and more serious than history." He doesn't leave ...

Church, State and Civil Society
David Fergusson
Cambridge University Press
, 2005
The rich tradition of Christian political theology demands renewed attention, particularly at a time when secular liberalism is in crisis and when the civic contribution of religion is being re-assessed. This book explores the relationship of the church both to the state and civil institutions, drawing specifically on the concept of civil society. It offers a critical assessment of the effect of the First Amendment in the United States and, in a ...

Easy to Use
This is a great rhyming dictionary. It's got tons of words, and they're very neatly organized. The back half of the book is an index (organized in traditional A-Z order), so instead of sounding out the word you're looking for and trying to figure out what sound it's listed under, the index can lead you right to it. It also includes examples of rhymes from famous poets, right next to the sound ...

One of the most remarkable features of life in the Southwest is the presence of Native American religious ceremonies in communities that are driving distance from Sunbelt cities. Many of these ceremonies are open to the public and Dancing Gods is the best single reference for visitors to dances at the Rio Grande Pueblos, Zuni Pueblo, the Hopi Mesas, and the Navajo and Apache reservations. The Most Learned Woman in America: A Life of Elizabeth Graeme Fergusson
Anne M. Ousterhout
Pennsylvania State University Press
, 2003
"The Most Learned Woman in America is a delightful addition to the growing corpus of knowledge that we have concerning America's 'Founding Mothers.' Elizabeth Graeme Fergusson was famous in her time, virtually unknown in our own. Yet, as Anne Ousterhout points out in her painstakingly researched work, she was a woman who was known in her own right; she was never merely an appendage of the men to whom she was related. Fergusson's literary salon ...
