A Field Guide to Western Trees (Peterson Field Guides: 44) 2 reviews George A. Petrides
Houghton Mifflin, 1998
Explore a New World I am a birder but always wanted to ID the trees that the birds were perched in. I first took this book out in the field to the Arboretums in San Francisco and Berkeley. I found the book easy to use for IDing native trees. I also took this book with me on a trip to the eastern Sierras and trees that I have previously looked at as "pines" turned into Lodgepole, Mountain Hemlock, Whitebark, Red and ...

National Wildlife Federation Field Guide to Trees of North America 2 reviews Bruce Kershner
Sterling, 2008
Best tree book I have seen! I have had and looked at dozens of ID books, and they all have ups and downs. This, as far as I can tell, has little to no downs. It has a wonderful layout with pictures and text together...no more flipping back and forth! It also is organized so that you can search by leaf type. Even if you don't know how to tell the difference...the info on how to tell the different leaf patterns is all at the ...

A Field Guide to Eastern Trees (Peterson Field Guides) 13 reviews George A. Petrides
Houghton Mifflin, 1998
A Field Guide to Eastern Trees I bought this for my husband for Christmas. He was blown away by all the information this little book contained. The only thing he said that he didn't care for was that some of the pictures were in black and white and he would have prefered all colored pictures.

A Field Guide to Trees and Shrubs: Northeastern and north-central United States and southeastern and ... 7 reviews
Houghton Mifflin, 1973
Best for field work As a wetland delineator in PA, this book proves invaluable for field identification of trees, shrubs, and vines. Especially useful is are the keys for identification of these plants in winter when leaves and fruiting bodies are non-existant. I have several other tree books for reference, but they rarely are worth carting along in the field now that I have this book. I highly recommend it.

Trees of North America: A Guide to Field Identification, Revised and Updated (Golden Field Guide from St. ... 18 reviews C. Frank Brockman
Golden Guides from St. Martin's Press, 2001
A true field guide - as good as it gets This is one of the best tree field guides I have ever used. Comparing this guide to the tree field guide published by Audubon, the paintings in the Golden guide display leaf features much more clearly than the photos used in the Audubon guide. Also, this guide covers over 500 species throughout the U.S. while similar pocket-sized field guides don't cover such a broad range. The descriptions of ...

The Illustrated Book of Trees: The Comprehensive Field Guide to More Than 250 Trees of Eastern North America 5 reviews William Carey Grimm, John T. Kartesz
Stackpole Books, 2001
More than identification I bought my 1983 edition when I was active as a park district volunteer. What sold me on this book was that it went beyond the tree's identification, and told you more about the tree itself. For example, looking up the Sycamore it says "The Sycamore is also known as the Buttonwood, Buttonball-tree, and the American Plane Tree. It is one of the most massive of all our native trees, perhaps ...

National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Trees--W: Western Region (National Audubon Society ... 9 reviews Elbert L. Little
Knopf, 1980
North American trees, West. If your going to be stuffing your field guide into your pocket, glove box, daypack or backpack, the "turtleback" binding used by Audubon is perfect. Personally, I don't use it that way. When I encounter a species I cannot identify, I take notes (usually of the mental variety) -- leaf characteristics, bark characteristics, size, form, habitat, seeds, flowers, etc. -- and identify it when I return ...

Trees of Ohio Field Guide (Trees) 7 reviews Stan Tekiela
Adventure Publications, 2004
Descent field ID and it fits in your back pocket! I have almost broke the entire spine from use, and this is definitely one of the best small pocket field ID guides I've ever had for Ohio flora. While there are definitely problems with it (lack of details, diversity of species) it is one I would recommend any serious outdoor person check out. I always keep it in my hiking pack along with the Woods Plants and Shrubs of SE Ohio and Lucy Braun's ...

A Field Guide to Eastern Forests: North America (Peterson Field Guides (R)) 6 reviews
Houghton Mifflin, 1998
Introducing the Eastern Forest The purpose of this guide is not to assist one in identifying species of flora and fauna found in the Eastern Forest--such a tome would be monumental in size--but rather to instill in the reader an understanding of the forest's general dynamics. The book is divided into eight sections; they are: 1) How to use this book 2) Forest field marks 3) Eastern forest communities 4) Disturbance and ...

Forest Gold I remember enjoying the bounty of the land with my grandparents - leeks, real maple syrup, venison, wild strawberries, and shin shang. What is shin shang? It is one of our areas best-kept secrets, American ginseng.
