Shoofly Pie (Bug Man Series #1)22 reviews
Tim Downs

Howard Books, 2003

Excellent forensic mystery novel suitable for teens and above
While no one describes a tomato patch quite like Grisham, no one describes necrophilic-feasting insects chowing down on a decomposing body quite like Downs. I picked this novel up in the bargain bin at my local Kroger store for about $8 and it's probably the best $8 I've ever spent. I was pleasantly surprised with the deft at which Downs crafted this mystery/thriller since it was his first ...

Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers344 reviews
Mary Roach

W. W. Norton & Company, 2004

Wonderful book
I absolutely adore this book. While I didn't fall off the bed laughing, I certainly had a fun time reading it. It is very rare to read an intellectual author who is both informative and charming. I couldn't put the book down. A definite read for anybody who is interested in the physical body after death.

Dearly Devoted Dexter103 reviews
Jeff Lindsay

Vintage, 2006

GO DEXTER!!!
I first started watching the series on Showtime and was hooked. I bought the first season DVD and all the books. I am going to buy the second season DVD as well. The show is VERY GOOD!! It keeps you on the edge of your seat. The character Dexter is likeable yet scarey. All the characters are very interesting. I think Showtime did an awesome job in the cast.

Deja Dead220 reviews

Pocket Star, 1998

Scientific & scary, in a good way
This is the first of Kathy Reichs' Temperance Brennan novels and the first one I have read, but it will not be the last. Ms. Reichs writing is wonderfully descriptive - you really can visualize each scene while reading. Her skill at conveying the specific scientific details while maintaining the twists and turns of her well designed plot makes for a book you won't want to put down. So, pick ...

Stone Cold127 reviews
David Baldacci

Grand Central Publishing, 2007

A Rip-roaring Thriller
Fete of Death "Stone Cold" is a fast-paced conspiracy thriller starring the shadowy CIA hit man Oliver Stone, not to be confused with the eponymous conspiracy-minded movie director of "JFK." Men involved in Stone's unsavory and violent past are being picked off by a ruthless assassin. Stone, with good reason, begins to fear for his own life. It is obvious to him that someone out there, ...

Book of the Dead (Kay Scarpetta, No. 15)600 reviews
Patricia Cornwell

Putnam Adult, 2007

Book of the Dead
I have read all of Patricia Cornwell's books and this is one of the best if not the best. Book of the Dead is Kay Scarpetta at her best. I absolutely loved it. It is a page turner from beginning to end. I hope that she will add to the Scarpetta series. Pat Bounds

Dexter in the Dark: A Novel139 reviews
Jeff Lindsay

Doubleday, 2007

Happy departure
First off, if you like the dexter TV series, this book may not be for you. If you like the lovable Dexter who claims he's not human, but still loves, cares, and has honest true feelings for his sister and a few other characters, this ABSOLUTELY is not for you. This 2007 novel, the third in the popular "Dexter" series, took a strong departure into the spiritualistic nature of our favorite ...

The Hot Zone: A Terrifying True Story473 reviews
Richard Preston

Anchor, 1995

Great Novel
This book is incredible and I highly recommend it to anyone, especially if you are a fan of virology, epidemiology, or just a book that you don't want to put down! I found myself unable to stop reading as the beginning really grabs you and pulls you in. It's incredibly interesting and the best part is it is based on true events, which I believe makes it much scarier/better. Overall, I believe ...

Devil Bones: A Novel
Kathy Reichs

Scribner, 2008

Following her most successful book to date, Kathy Reichs -- international number one bestselling author, forensic anthropologist, and producer of the Fox television hit Bones -- returns to Charlotte, North Carolina, where Temperance Brennan encounters a deadly mix of voodoo, Santerķa, and devil worship in her quest to identify two young victims. In a house under renovation, a plumber uncovers a cellar no one knew about, and makes a rather ...

Chop Shop (Bug Man Series #2)8 reviews
Tim Downs

Howard Books, 2004

Another winner with more texture than the first...
After reading his debut Bug Man novel Shoofly Pie, I knew I had to get ahold of Tim Downs' second (and latest) installment of the Bug Man series - Chop Shop. Once again, Downs pulls off a definite winner, with even more texture than the first. Dr. Nick Polchak is once again censured from the university for "dissecting" a sleeping student in his class. No matter to him, as it just gives him ...

Thank You for Arguing: What Aristotle, Lincoln, and Homer Simpson Can Teach Us About the Art of Persuasion23 reviews
Jay Heinrichs

Three Rivers Press, 2007

Use this kind of argument in your marriage.
When couples come to me for marriage counseling, they typically violate Heinrichs' most elementary principles. After reading this book, I realize that an important aspect of my counseling has been teaching rhetoric--the art of polite arguing. For most couples, the idea of arguing politely seems like a joke or at least a myth until they learn to do it. The book will help with your ...

Dead Time25 reviews
Stephen White

Dutton Adult, 2008

great people in bad situations
Dr. Alan Gregory is a durable hero. He's been shot, stabbed, pushed off of cliffs, almost pushed off of cliffs, stalked, variously assaulted, and attacked by at least one wild animal. And yet he remains a mensch - tiresomely physically fit and over-addicted to healthy living, perhaps, but still a mensch. He admires his wife, cherishes his friends, and generally respects his patients. He loves ...

This continues just like all of Kathy's books. It is a great read and a good mystery.

Bones to Ashes: A Novel73 reviews
Kathy Reichs

Scribner, 2007

A new mystery excellently solved!
Oh, do I ever adore Reichs's novels. Her novels show proof that there are no limits to one's imagination - especially when the author knows what she/he is talking about. Reichs sucks you in with the first sentence and doesn't let go until the very last word. The mystery and forensic descriptions keep you just as glued to the pages as the characters do. Again, Tempe lands herself in trouble ...

Death du Jour160 reviews
Kathy Reichs

Another day, another death...
In Death Du Jour, the second Temperance Brennan mystery, Kathy Reichs proves that she's not just a flash in the pan. Forensic anthropologist, Temperance Brennan, splits her time between Montreal and Charlotte, North Carolina, working with law enforcement and teaching. She's in Montreal when a gruesome discovery is made--three bodies are discovered after an arson fire. But it appears that the ...

All That Remains: A Scarpetta Novel (Kay Scarpetta Mysteries)94 reviews
Patricia Cornwell

Pocket, 2005

Fast paced exciting
Another fast paced exciting page turner that is one of my favorites in the Scarpetta line. The in depth forensics is fantastic, and keep you entertained from start to finish. I also like the twists and turns that Cornwell leaves you with.

The Serpent's Tale16 reviews
Ariana Franklin

Putnam Adult, 2008

The Second Book in the Adelia Aguilar Series
Ariana Franklin is the pseudonym of a well-known author of historical novels, Diana Norman, wife of the film critic Barry Norman. She is a former Fleet Street Reporter and lives in Hertfordshire. I thoroughly enjoyed the author's first book The Mistress of the Art of Death, finding it well researched and very well written, so of course I was delighted when I saw the Serpent's tale in the ...

First the Dead (Bug Man Series #3)10 reviews
Tim Downs

Thomas Nelson, 2008

Take Comfort
Tim Downs has been off in the corner, quietly, but not safely, creating one of the best characters in modern suspense. Nick Polchak, the Bug Man, has evolved from the Coke-bottle spectacles and reclusive nature of his first appearance into a more physical creature, using witty sarcasm as a natural defense, and putting his insect-loving ways to good use in the face of danger. This time around ...
