Dispassionately Compelling
Like most of Camus' works, The Stranger's plot is simple but the meaning is trivially existentialist and compelling. The Stranger begins with the death of narrator Meursault's mother. After napping on the bus to her retirement home, Meursault is disengaged and unmoved by the vigil and funeral procession, and continues to be until the finale of his trial. Meursault appears insensitive ...

Long. Boring.
Perhaps it's my lack of enthusiam for classic English literature, but I found this book dull and very unamusing. I purchased this because my English teacher wanted us to read it, and while I don't regret buying it, I highly doubt I'm going to read it again. Though, keep in mind I'm but a teenager, and not a fan of the classics. I'm sure if the classics are your thing, then you'll love this ...

Part psychological study, part police thriller, wholly a great read
IN THE WOODS, Tana French's debut novel, centers on a Dublin, Ireland murder squad detective named Rob Ryan. The year of the telling is 2004. Twenty years previously, on a warm summer night, Rob (then known as Adam) was playing with two friends, Jamie Rowan and Peter Savage, in the woods near his home. The three children had done this before on many occasions. But on this particular night, Jamie ...

Moving and poignant reflection on the persistence of humanity
When I started "Suite Francaise," I thought it would take a lot of time and effort to complete. Happily, I was wrong. Once I got into it, I couldn't put it down. The novel is actually composed of two novellas, "Storm in June" and "Dolce", which Nemirovsky had intended to be the first of a five-part epic. "Storm in June" was a strong opener and conveyed the proverbial horrors of war for the ...

Every Christian Should Read This Book
I have read this incredible work of art several times and never cease to be amazed by the enormous impact it has on me. The first time I ever read it, I cried off and on for about three days, I was so moved. Victor Hugo tapped into something profound when he penned this story. It is long, yes, but I find that every little rabbit trail Hugo goes down has a very important point. I can just read the ...

Next cup of a reliable mystery series
I've enjoyed this cozy mystery series since its inception. French Pressed is a very good novel that both tells a standalone mystery and -- more important to those of us who have been following Claire since she took over managing the Greenwich Village coffeehouse -- moves the characters along in their own development. This time the focus is on Claire's daughter, Joy, who has been working on her ...

A Time Tested Classic
If I was stranded on a desert island and could only take one book with me, it would be this one. It does not matter how many times I read this book over the years, every time I pick it up, it is as if I was reading it for the first time. I realize something new and profound with every reading. This little book is so compact with depth of meaning and wisdom, it is truly as timeless as wisdom ...

The perfect story
"The Count of Monte Cristo" is a literary masterpiece. It has everything one could want in a book and more: adventure, fighting, planning, tales of riches, tales of suffering, tales of ultimate betrayal and revenge, and even a little love. This book may be long, but every single page is worth your time. It is written so perfectly and the story put together with such great design...an epic tale ...

A 'must' for any college-level collection strong in Camus
College-level collections strong on Camus will find this a special acquisition presenting the notebooks withheld in France for some 29 years after his death, appearing for the first time in English. The first two volumes of his notebooks began simply but this concluding volume was written over the last nine years that he lived, and reads more intimately, like a diary. From his travels to his ...

Un Deux Trois - Unique and Exceptional
As a preschool French teacher at a Montessori school, I am always looking for good products to recommend to parents for at-home enrichment. What makes this book/CD set so special is the exceptional quality and beauty of the speaking and the fact that it is unique. There are many CDs with French songs, but few for young children on the American market, where French is spoken. The poems, ...

Balanced food for balanced weight
Part healthy living guide, part memoir, this non-diet book is chock-full of great advice for weight control. I have lost over thirty pounds since reading this book almost two years ago, which has also been reread when I've felt myself slipping back into an American standard of eating. Even if you don't want to buy a yogurt machine or eat leeks for a weekend, this sage advice is well worth your ...

As Satisfying as a Hand Made Bowl of Julia's Potage Veloute au Champignons
It all began with a new bride wanting to learn to cook and progressed to owning a share in a cooking school, writing classic cookbooks that will be in print for many years, and becoming a television celebrity. During her last years, Julia Child and her husband's grandnephew, Alex Prud'homme, met frequently to record her memories. The heart of the narrative is her first years in France, where ...

loved it, ya'll!
A thoroughly enjoyable cookbook to read. Easy to follow recipes, nostalgic dialog, just an all around nice addition to my southern cookbook gallery. I have made the barbeque sauce she recommended and with a few personal tweeks, and it is now one of my go-to sauces. It's really tangy and good. I am planning to use this book alot. Virginia Willis has really hit a home run with this one! I ...

Masterpiece of Nothingness
Many parts of this play are comically driven - many are not. And, the majority are neither - or so Beckett may have said as part of his stylistic prank on the reader. Beckett had a target, and he would smile at his target as much as permitted. His dripping dialogue is often interpreted with misinterpretation, misidentification, miscue. That part of the play is resoundingly great. To not have ...

This is probably one of the best books I have ever read. We read it in my fourth year french class, right before graduation. It is such a simple tale wherein lies a deep and meaningful message. It is open for interpretation, which is part of what makes it so great. You really have to think in order to gather the entire message. I hope to purchase the french version soon.

Voltaire at his most sarcastic
This was required reading for a graduate course in the Humanities. A great story and important historical work in literature. Voltaire was a Renaissance Christian humanist who played a role in the development of the Enlightenment. On the one hand, the structure of his novel Candide is Homeric, it is the journey narrative, the hero with a thousand faces, but it is a satirical restructuring ...
