John D Fix
McGraw-Hill Science/Engineering/Math
, 2007
Astronomy: Journey to the Cosmic Frontier , 5th edition, provides enough content and background in astronomy so the student will be able to follow current developments in astronomy years after they complete the course. The historical development of astronomy is emphasized to show that astronomy, like other sciences, advances through the efforts of many scientists, and to show how present ideas have been developed.

Something for Everyone!
This book is a compilation of essays done by both male and female authors. It shows the diversity of topics, issues, and points of views of feminists. This book was my text book for Women's Studies 101 and I didn't have to read all of it for the class, but I found myself reading a lot of the other essays because the topic was interesting to me or I identified with it or it was a topic I wanted ...

A classical look at the suburbs of the United States
Jackson writes one of the seminal studies in urban history relating to the suburbs. The end conclusion is that suburbs have not been beneficial to the United States. This tracks things from the start of suburbanization to the downfall of downtowns. Race relations are a big part of the book as is the heralding of the automobile. Jackson writes very well and the book is wonderfully organized. If ...

Reconsidering Frederick Jackson Turner's Frontier Thesis
Wisconsin History Professor Frederick Jackson Turner came up with the "Frontier Thesis," the idea that it was the frontier that was the most important factor in shaping the American nation. Turner linked American democracy, nationalism, individualism, as well as physical and social mobility to how pioneers faced the frontier as they moved the boundaries of the United States westward. Richard W. ...

A Great Woman of Faith
I selected this book from a list given in my college English class. The list of books were all nonfiction so I knew it would be a book based on fact. I knew nothing more. As I read, I could not put this book down. The story takes place beginning in Iowa the year 1849. "Gold fever" was born. The Royce family was on the move from their home to the great golden state of California. Sarah has more ...

More Super Hero Action Than Vol. 1, Entertaining But Not Darwyn's Best Work
DC: THE NEW FRONTIER, VOL. 2 has more action and adventure than VOL. 1. If you liked VOL. 1, then this will be slightly better. VOL. 1 seemed to be all about moody foreshadowing, (the superheroes might return...the world before/without superheroes), but it was so moody and low on action that I thought that was the whole point of THE NEW FRONTIER, just to maintain the anticipation of The ...

fascinating read with clear thesis
This is a riveting book that posits a clear interpretation of prehistory and history, and then sets out to prove it. Flannery acknowledges that his thesis is not the only one and that many others disagree with it. I felt as though he at least recognized other theories, even if he didn't give them as much time or space as his own (and why should he?). If you are interested in the ecological ...

DC's classic heroes presented in a fresh way
I recently enjoyed the "Justice League: The New Frontier" direct-to-DVD movie and decided to finally check out its literary inspiration, the "DC: The New Frontier" comic book mini-series. This volume collects the first three issues of that series. Like the animated film, I found this initial volume to be gripping and involving, and generally a lot of fun. As I said about the film, it was ...

"Hurtado tackles two of the thorniest of historical subjects--frontiers and sexuality. That he does so with good research, style, and wit makes this an enthralling, sophisticated study." (Anne Butler, JOURNAL OF AMERICAN HISTORY) INTIMATE FRONTIERS "is a truly masterful piece of history that reveals the significance of gender and sexuality in the American West and further proves the importance of ...

What Constitutes A Life Worthy of Human Dignity?
Martha Nussbaum is a promoter of the capabilities approach, a school of thought that seeks to delineate the conditions for a just and decent world based on what people are actually able to be and to do (their "capabilities") in order to lead a life worthy of human dignity. Amartya Sen has pioneered this approach in the realm of economics where he has proposed to analyze development as consisting ...

Great Textbook, BUT Not Much Is New In This Edition
As always, Feminist Frontiers is a great collection of essays -- a great textbook for any Women's Studies class. However, not much has been updated in this 5th edition. As far as I can tell, it is virtually the same as the 4th edition. I think getting a used copy of Feminist Frontiers IV (ISBN 0070523797) is a much better value. Either way, you will thoroughly enjoy the readings in this book.

A fascinating recasting of the dynamics of Chinese history
Barfield's primary thesis is that the dynamics of Chinese civilization are not intelligible considered in isoloation. Rather, comprehension requires the distinction between Manchurian and Native dynasties and the role that empires of the steppe played in the changes between them. Of special interest is that by far the best know steppe empire, that of the Mongols under Temujin and his ...

A very good book, whose point of view will irritate many
On its own terms, this book is a huge success. It synthesizes the past 30 years of serious historical research which revolutionized the presentation of the history of the American West by rescuing the experiences of groups who had been relatively ignored by standard interpretations. Indians, women, blacks, Latinos, Asians, workers are dealt with at length and with sympathy. The research of ...

A really great story!
I thought this was a well written story. It is filled with lots of history and some frontier realities. It has the makings of a wonderful story with strained feelings of love, old enemies and betrayal. The main characters are Creed and Cricket but the story is also very full of Crickets two sisters, her father and Creeds brother Tom and his wife Amy. It's a book that, once started, is very ...

In the nineteenth century the church made a great commitment to overseas missions opening new works in many countries that had never heard the gospel. Robert Kaplan is my favorite non-fiction writer. I have read almost everything he has written. This book was the first book of his that I read -- it prompted me to read many more. The other North American frontier, or should we say frontiers?
Frontiers, in the plural, might be better. While many of us may call to mind Santa Fe, or the Alamo, the Spaniards were settled in, or exploring or defending, many places in North America. Only tenuously connected to each other, these frontier areas included Florida, the Gulf Coast, Texas, New Mexico, California and Arizona. While New Mexico was reachable from Chihuahua, the Llano Estacado ...
