The Color of Summer: or The New Garden of Earthly Delights 6 reviews Reinaldo Arenas
Penguin (Non-Classics), 2001
Wow! Wow! I just finished reading "The Color Of Summer" by the late Cuban writer Reinaldo Arenas--and what a challenge it is for me to describe or assess this extraordinary work of fiction. It seems to be a hybrid of memoir, satire, and wild, hallucinatory magical realism. Maybe I should de-emphasize the term "realism." Historical events are exaggerated or transmogrified by the author--often with ...

The Garden of Earthly Delights Cookbook 2 reviews Shea MacKenzie
Avery, 1993
The best vegetarian cookbook in my collection I have over 100 vegetarian cookbooks but this is my favorite. The recipes are all delicious and range from simple to difficult (but well worth any effort). When I am having company I always turn to this book and even non-vegetarians will rave and never miss the meat.

Gardens of Earthly Delight 8 reviews Patricia Corbin
Dutton Adult, 1985
I owe my self-esteem to this book I was a scrawny little kid to whom baseball was everything. To my parent's dismay, I judged myself by how I played baseball. But I was scared of the baseball and lost as to how to go about hitting it. My coaches gave me harmful, misguided instructions like, "make sure it's a stike, then swing at it" and "snap those wrists". I was a wreck. Then one winter my Dad (like me, a George Brett/Wade ...

Detail from the Garden of Earthly Delights (Akron Series in Poetry) 1 review Dennis Hinrichsen
University of Akron Press, 2000
Delicious poetry! Dennis Hinrichsen's poetry is like verbal cheesecake: dense, sweet, rich, and leaving one craving for more. He intricately weaves his words across the page in patterns that are as interesting visually as they are to the ear. Be sure to taste these aloud; this poetry is meant to be heard. With its powerfully subtle imagery, these pages are filled with turns of phrase that haunt the reader long ...

Garden of Earthly Delights 8 reviews Joyce Carol Oates
Fawcett Books, 1979
Excellent quality of writing The plot was all right, but I was most impressed by Ms. Oates's lyrical use of language. She has the ability to transform the most mundane actions, feelings, or settings into something that seems really unusual or noteworthy just by describing it a certain way. I love the way the the main character, Clara, sees the world...it is very refreshing and unusual. I can't really tell if the awesome ...

The Garden of Earthly Delights 3 reviews Peter S. Beagle
The Viking Press, 1982
A Bosch Savior As anyone who has studied art history is painfully aware, the world of Hieronymus Bosch is extremely complicated. This was a wonderful introduction to that difficult world. It gave insights into the symbolism of his works without being confusing and illustrates them with number of full color photographs and details. An excellent laymen's guide to the painter.

Earthly Paradises: Ancient Gardens in History and Archaeology 1 review Maureen Carroll
British Museum Press, 2003
Ancient Gardens, Unchanging Gardeners We are all familiar with ancient buildings like the Luxor temples, Acropolis, or houses in Pompeii, and from them we can get an idea of how people of their times lived. But what about their gardens? The question is not trivial. Gardens have always represented an ideal sensual and peaceful environment, and what ancient gardens were like could tell us something about the ancients and about humans ...

Earthly Pleasures 3 reviews Swain
Scribner, 1981
Earthly Pleasures Anyone growing up or living on a working farm in Ohio (or any other small family farm location) should relate to this book if for no other reason than picturing a dairy cow, floating with inner tubes around each leg, happily munching on duckweed. Each of the short essays, originally found in Horticulture Magazine, entertain and educate. Mr. Swain's easy writing style holds your attention quite ...
