Blood by Gaslight: Classic Vampire Stories1 review

Promethean Press, 2007

Great Collection!
This is a great collection of Victorian vampire stories, many of which I had never seen before. The editor, R.T. Van Pelt, wisely chose to ignore the more common reprinted vampire stories (with the exception of John Polidori's "The Vampyre", whose contribution to the genre necessitated its inclusion), giving the readers a relatively fresh collection of stories that, while often overlooked, are no ...

Gaslight Grimoire: Fantastic Tales of Sherlock Holmes1 review
Barbara Hambly, Kim Newman, ...

EDGE Science Fiction and Fantasy Publishing, 2008

Ghosts May Apply!
This is a collection of Sherlockian tales in which, to quote David Stuart Davies' Forward, "Ghosts may apply." Each of the tales involves some `supernatural' element, a Djinn, a Vampire, a painting, quite a variety of individuals and items. In fact, Chico Kidd and Rick Kennett's "The Grantchester Grimoire" is only the second pastiche I know of that pairs Holmes and Hodgson's Carnacki the Ghost ...

Black by Gaslight1 review
Nene Adams

Cavalier Press, 2005

Move Over Sherlock
Set in the same time period here is a book not only rich in descriptions and dialogue fitting that era, but also a refreshing contemporary to Sherlock and his Watson. The author has obviously gone to great lengths to make this story true to that era. Bright, bold and independent, Lady St Claire finds herself embroiled not only in a hunt for a dangerous madman, but becoming enmeshed in a ...

New York by Gas-Light and Other Urban Sketches3 reviews
George G. Foster

University of California Press, 1990

Excellent First-Person Account of New York Life in 1850
This book was a delight to read. The fact that it was written as a first person account, using the vernacular of the time, made it even better. Also, the fact that the majority of the book is involved with nocturnal New York, and all the seedy goings-on one might associate with it in any time period, make it even more interesting. I especially liked the way Foster evoked a sense of adventure, by ...

The Stark Munro Letters (Doyle, Arthur Conan, Conan Doyle Centennial Series.)2 reviews
Arthur Conan, Sir Doyle

Gaslight Pubns, 1982

Turn-of-the-Century Ideas
This book was published first in 1895, and the setting is in various small cities in England of that time. The author believed that the public gave too much attention to the character he created, Sherlock Holmes, and neglected his other works. He undoubtedly was justified in this opinion. This novel is an important work because Doyle has been quoted as saying much of the book is based on his ...

A LIFE OF MANY ADVENTURES
First of all let me give you a product description as not much is provided with the item. The book is about 415 pages,a big, black leather covered one.It doesn't have a cover photogaph and looks like the library editions of the victoria era novels. As it is a reprint of the 1924 edition it does not contain the last chapter "up to date",which doyle added later to the revised edition of 1930.But as it ...

The Sherlock Holmes Apocrypha1 review
Arthur Conan, Sir Doyle

Gaslight Pubns, 1994

Beyond the canonical...
This book is a reprint of the earlier edition of this volume, 'Sherlock Holmes: The Published Apocrypha'; this was put out by Tracy's own Gaslight Publications. In this volume, Tracy has edited several works beyond the canonical 60 that were actually penned (or at least outlined and inspired) by Conan Doyle himself -- hence the term 'apocrypha'. These are not parodies or pastiches as such, but ...

Grace Anne chaefer

GASLight Publishing L.L.C., 2007

Travel back in time!
Reviewed by Mary Simmons for Reader Views (8/06) Change can be a frightening aspect of life. When you have to pick up and move, start fresh in a new, unknown place, it can be a daunting time even in today's world. As author Grace Anne Schaefer proposes in her second book of the `People of the Frozen Earth' series, these same fears and emotions were in the hearts of the semi-nomadic tribes ...

Murder on Bank Street (Gaslight Mystery)19 reviews
Victoria Thompson

Berkley, 2009

Murder On Bank Street
Victoria Thompson has become one of my favorite authors. First of all, she brings me to a time in history where the poor were really at the mercy of the rich for everything. People, including children, would literally do anything for money. It's kind of like today. I imagine people in undeveloped countries still live like this. But this was New York. Somehow it sounds far fetched, but ...

Murder on Marble Row (Gaslight Mystery Series)12 reviews
Victoria Thompson, 2004

A great book from a great series
I first bought this book and then had to go back and get the rest of the series. It is a very well written series which gives a sort of feel for the history of the time/area with all the enjoyment of reading a mystery and not a history book.

Murder in Little Italy (Gaslight Mysteries (Hardcover))19 reviews
Victoria Thompson

Berkley Hardcover, 2006

Murder In Little Italy
Victoria Thompson is one of the best writers of a mystery series that has everything in it---murder and humor. The times she writes about, the very early 19th century is both fascinating and sad. Everyday upper crust people are accurately portrayed, and their downfall is something you look forward to. She has a lot of historical facts, and she's just very good at what she's doing. I hope ...

Richard Lindberg

Academy Chicago Publishers, 1996

Valuable and Informative
Richard Lindberg has written one of the best resouces available and comes highly recommended. I bought this book as research material for a novel and found it extremely helpful. A valuable and informative guide for anyone interested in this fascinating period in Chicago's history.

Sherlock Holmes: The Published Apocrypha1 review
Arthur Conan, Sir Doyle

Gaslight Pubns, 1980

When the official canon is not enough...
Jack Tracy was a bit of a mystery himself -- publisher of books on Sherlock Holmes, he even owned by a press in my current residence of Bloomington, Indiana, called Gaslight, dedicated to keeping the Sherlock Holmes legacy alive. Tracy himself died under mysterious circumstances a few years after his mother also died under questionable circumstances -- there was no Holmes to put all the things ...

The Last Boat Out: Memoirs of a Triumphant Vietnamese-American Family6 reviews
Truong-Nhu Dinh and Tran Thi Truong Nga

GASLight Publishing LLC, 2006

Impressed with the history and insight
Glad I had the opportunity to read this one. Vivid details, great to hear the can-do philosophy of these immigrants during the Vietnam war. Starting from nothing but the clothes on their back, and managing to raise six children is certainly a commendable feat. Great read for those schools wanting an accurate account of the war through the people who were being affected each day.

Murder on Washington Square (Gaslight Mystery)14 reviews
Victoria Thompson

Berkley, 2002

4th in Gaslight Mysteries is best so far!
Murder on Washington Square by Victoria Thompson is the 4th book in the Gaslight series featuring Victorian era midwife Sarah Brandt and New York Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy. This was absolutely the best book so far in the series. When Sarah's neighbor, Mrs. Ellison's son is charged with the murder of his mistress, Sarah jumps to help prove his innocence, much to Malloy's frustration. ...

The Gaslight Effect: How to Spot and Survive the Hidden Manipulation Others Use to Control Your Life20 reviews
Robin Stern

Fusion Press, 2008

Very helpful
The most useful part of this book is that it explains what makes gaslighting possible. The only thing the victim can control is her/his need for approval. How to go about achieving that is thin, although understandably so since it's another huge topic altogether: self-esteem. This book is invaluable, however, in pointing out the driving needs of both parties.

Murder on Mulberry Bend (Gaslight Mystery)12 reviews
Victoria Thompson

Berkley, 2003

5th entry in Gaslight Mystery series best yet!
Murder on Mulberry Bend by Victoria Thompson is the fifth book in the Gaslight Mystery series starring New York midwife Sarah Brandt and Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy. Unlike many long term series that lose their steam after the first book, the Gaslight series just seems to get better with each entry. After Sarah becomes involved in a mission for young girls, one of them is found murdered. ...

Murder on Lenox Hill (Gaslight Mysteries)14 reviews
Victoria Thompson

Berkley Hardcover, 2005

Seventh entry in Gaslight Mystery another hit
Murder on Lenox Hill by Victoria Thompson is the seventh entry in the Gaslight Mystery series starring Sarah Brandt, a New York midwife and Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy. This book was probably the most disturbing book in the series so far. The wealthy Linton family asks Sarah to examine their 17-year-old daughter when they suspect that she's pregnant. The girl is mentally disabled and ...
