Best organization of all introductory GIS texts
This book has the best organization of all the GIS texts I've read. Other texts have either too little or too much on some topics (especially GIS project management and GIS analysis). This one has an excellent balance. A little more on data sources would have been nice. The British authors use a few terms American students won't recognize, but it reads very well. I'm recommending it right now ...

An essential introduction to GIS
This is arguably the best introduction to GIS available. A worthy successor to Burrough's earlier work, this book provides a very broad perspective of spatial information systems, ranging from the basics of data modelling and representation, to more complex (but essential) issues such as geostatistics, fuzzy logic and data quality. A lot of so-called "introduction to GIS" books are in reality ...

A required text
My graduate class raced through this text. It was dry, but informative. Certainly not the book you should read for pleasure. By itself it would not have helped me grasp the history of geography, as its title suggests. It was only with the context provided by the prof that things started to gel.
Spaces of Geographical Thought: Deconstructing Human Geography's Binaries (Society and Space Series)
Sage Publications Ltd

Spaces of Geographical Thought examines key ideas ? like space and place - which inform the geographic imagination. The text explains the significance of these binaries in the constitution of geographic thought and shows how many of these binaries have been interrogated and reimagined in more recent geographical thinking. A consideration of these binaries will define the concepts and situate students in the most current geographical ...

Like a Steady, Reliable Friend.
I have used this book as a reliable geographical reference for years and never found it wanting. Both historic and modern places and geographic features are included. I have found everything I needed, from Ash Flat to Pskov. The appendix contains a thorough table of geographical terms in languages other than English, as well as a useful glossary.

A Fine End to a Magisterial Work
For 20 years, D.W Meinig has been producing a work of superhuman scope, covering the development of America from the time of Columbus from a geographical perspective. Each of the four volumes contains eye-opening information that cannot help but change your perspective on this country. The first two-thirds of the fourth volume are really continuations of the themes of the third book, showing ...
Geographical Indications for Food Products

Geographical indications (GIs) for food and other names that connote a characteristic or process together with origin fit in with notions of quality, tradition, and support for local producers that are important for the producers, for an increasing number of consumers, and for local development. Although there are many costs and administrative commitments associated with the use of these names, they can fill a growing consumer demand and a ...

A Geographical Guide to the Real and the Good
Robert Sack
Routledge
, 2003
In this original and ambitious work, the renowned geographer Robert Sack argues for places that expand our awareness of reality and that increase the variety and complexity of reality. The joint application of these two criteria is the basis of a geographically informed moral theory that emphasizes the role of altruism. As well, it sheds light on the connection between the real and the good. Place-making that is guided by these criteria can ...

One of the best demography books I have ever used.
This book is practically timeless! The formulas it contains cover just about everything you would ever need to do from a demographic standpoint. What is most rewarding is the practical approach the authors took in presenting the material. The scenarios and examples that they employ are practically exhaustive of the realworld problems demographers encounter in their work.

The Grand Summation of the 20th Century's Greatest Ecologist
Robert MacArthur, along with his mentor, G. Evelyn Hutchinson, is regarded by many as the greatest ecologist of the 20th Century. He made significant contributions to our understanding of ecological niches, interspecific competition, and perhaps most importantly, provided a unique means of looking at species diversity as a complex interaction between speciation (or species immigration) and ...

Review of Darsie's The mosquitoes of North America
Good book to own if interested in identifying North American mosquitoes. Characters in some keys difficult to distinguish at times but still overall easy to use. The only thing that is lacking in this book is individual descriptions of species. Having these would make identification easier. Despite these few short comings, I still highly recommend this book for people working with mosquitoes.
