The Summer Guest41 reviews
Justin Cronin

Dial Press Trade Paperback, 2005

This is a rare gem!
I have told almost everyone I know to read this book! It is magnificently written. There is a truly memorable page in the book that made me cry as Mr. Cronin describes "man's best friend." I really loved that he told the story from the various characters point of view. I didn't want the book to end and have been hoping that Mr. Cronin will have a new book out by 2007. I am glad that he doesn't ...

BE OUR GUEST15 reviews
Disney Institute

Disney Editions, 2003

Service Excellence
Great book with actionable ideas that I have implemented in my company and they are making a possitive difference. Even if you are not in a "leadership" position, by sharing these processes with your boss or even testing them on a small scale and letting others see the possitive impact, you will look like a star. Disney is not a huge success by accident. Bottom line: it all comes back to ...

Guests of the Sheik: An Ethnography of an Iraqi Village32 reviews
Elizabeth Warnock Fernea

Anchor, 1995

Timely book
Even though this book was written in the last mid-century Iraq, the reader comes away with the feeling that it could have been written today, or 2 centuries ago. It's descriptions of the isolation of Iraqi villages, resistance to change, and brief insights into Iraqi politics makes it a book that should be read by those working to rebuild Iraq, those heading to Iraq, and those interested in why ...

Putting God On The Guest List: How To Reclaim The Spiritual Meaning Of Your Child's Bar Or Bat Mitzvah4 reviews
Jeffrey K. Salkin

Jewish Lights Publishing, 2005

Excellent book-shows the true significance of bar/bat mitzva
This book should be read by every parent whose child is approaching bar/bat mitzvah. Too often, the significance of the occasion is lost in the "big party". This book focuses on what is important about the bar/bat mitzvah-about accepting responsibilities such as study and performing mitzvot, about the service and about keeping the celebration in perspective. It focuses on the spiritual as it ...

Be My Guest14 reviews
Conrad N. Hilton

Prentice Hall, 1984

The Autobiography Of Conrad Hilton - Hotelier
Like many others who have come by this book Be My Guest was something I found at my bedside while staying at a Hilton Hotel. Like many others who have read the book before me I found the autobiography to be surprisingly well-written and entertaining. Be My Guest is the story of Conrad 'Connie' Hilton, the founder of the Hilton chain of hotels, of Socorro, New Mexico and how he grew a lone and ...

Ordinary People134 reviews
Judith Guest

Penguin (Non-Classics), 1982

Great read - stayed with me for a long time
This was one of my favourite books as a teen (ie about 15 years ago)! It's about grief and death and a family falling apart. I kept my battered copy for years when I lived in the UK and brought it home to Jamaica with me. I really identified with it at the time and felt that it crossed gender, racial, and cultural barriers in dealing with the topics. I am not white, upper middle class American ...

Mark Bowden

Grove Press, 2007

Bowden Delivers a Masterpiece
Guests of the Ayatollah presents the extensively researched, impelling non-fiction style for which Bowden has become widely acclaimed through his other best sellers. As someone who has read other Bowden books, I felt Guests of the Ayatollah is his best book to date. In this book, Bowden provides the intense, all-inclusive details from start to finish of the 444 day Iranian Hostage Crisis. ...

At The Beach House: A Guest Book7 reviews
Sandy Gingras

Down The Shore Publishing, 2003

Wow! Just what we were looking for!
Bought this for a gift when we visited a friend's beach house--has specific topics (weather, activities, who else was there) as sometimes it's hard to know what to say!

A Christmas Guest: A Novel14 reviews
Anne Perry

Ballantine Books, 2005

Great! Not your regular Christmas story....
I don't want to give away too much of the plot, but this Anne Perry gem truly SHINES. No, it's not your average Christmas story with predictable, shopworn plot devices. But being atypical is what makes it so great. Anne always delivers a great story and this is NO expection!!! I love her historical mysteries...she puts you right THERE...you're always cheering for the hero or heroine, and ...

The Mystery Guest
Grégoire Bouillier

Mariner Books, 2007

One gloomy Sunday afternoon, Grégoire Bouillier answers the phone only to hear the voice of the woman who left him, without warning, five years before. She isn't calling to apologize or explain the way she abruptly vanished from his life, but to invite him to be the "mystery guest" at a birthday party for a woman he's never met. Here is the true story of how a bottle of Bordeaux, a nonconsensual work of conceptual art, and a seemingly innocuous ...

Honored Guest
Joy Williams

Vintage, 2005

With her singular brand of gorgeous dark humor, Joy Williams explores the various ways–comic, tragic, and unnerving—we seek to accommodate diminishment and loss. A masseuse breaks her rich client's wrist bone, a friend visits at the hospital long after she is welcome, and a woman surrenders her husband to a creepily adoring student. From one of our most acclaimed writers, Honored Guest is a rich examination of our capacity for ...

Michael Dorris

Hyperion Book CH, 1999

Guests: A book reveiw
Bray Ferguson May 27, 2003 Community 7-213 Guests Guests by Michael Dorris, was intriguing and suspenseful. As the authors explains the beautiful woodlands in the Northeast, he revisits his childhood by explaining to the reader that he, himself grew-up in an Indian tribe and fell in love, as did the boy, Moss. He finds a girl and usually is scarred to talk to girls, but no, not this time, he ...

Be My Guest: Theme Party Savoir-Faire7 reviews
Rena Kirdar Sindi

Assouline, 2002

rena you rock
Rena's book is the perfect combo of utility and style. I have already bought a dozen book as gifts for friends and am planning on hosting a few bashs combining all Rena's ideas. Although I am an avid book lover and loyal amazon customer, I usually do not write reviews for books, but i was stunned with the creativity of this book. I hope i can one day meet this mastermind of creativity but until ...

Guest Log Book / Visitor Log Book1 review

BookFactory, 2005

Visitor Log book
This was purchased for our small church and we are pleased with the book itself, as well as the cost. I was disappointed that it took so long to arrive and took 3 attempts at delivery. We are in Hawaii, so perhaps should have paid the extra postage for speedier service from Ohio. I would recommend Fedex or UPS over DHL delivery service.

Guest Book (Personal Organizers)7 reviews
Peter Pauper Press

Peter Pauper Press, 2003

A very good buy and an attractive item.
This guest book is quite attractive--grey-beige roses work nicely with a gold binding. Pages are nicely lined with a pale lavender heading on each. Book conveniently lies flat with its spiral binding. A good choice for an occasion that may be more female- oriented, and not too large or formal as book is medium-sized. Still, has ample room for most needs and is not exclusively feminine.

The Guest1 review
Hwang Sok-yong

Seven Stories Press, 2007

Interesting book for serious students of Korea
North Korea has long accused American troups of a horrible slaughter of innocent civilians in Sincheon during the Korean War. Korean author Hwang Sok-yong tells a different story, reportedly based on interviews and a personal visit to North Korea. As told in this book, bitter fighting between communists and anti-communist "Christians" was the cause. This book is moving but difficult to read. ...
