The Forgotten Soldier: The Classic WWII Autobiography (Brassey's Commemorative Series WWII) 164 reviews Guy Sajer
Brassey's, 1990
Sobbering and Balanced Echos of Remarque's "All Quiet on the Western Front" - this book's actual accounts will leave the reader mentally drained. The graphic reality of combat on the Eastern front are jaw dropping. Combat experiences are conveyed expertly without self-praise nor self-loathing - just the facts and the struggle. Politics are abscent. The story shows a man's journey and his witness to the horrors of ...

Sam the Cooking Guy: Just a Bunch of Recipes 76 reviews Sam Zien
Wiley, 2008
Simple Sam, Sensational Recipes I found myself looking up Sam's recipes online all the time, so figured it was time to just buy his cookbook. Love that his recipes don't call for 10+ items, so I don't look like Rachel Ray carrying 10 ingredients in my arms from the pantry to the counter. His recipes are simple but always seem to include at least 1 ingredient that makes them unique (in a good way). My kind of cooking.

The Seven Mysteries of Life 35 reviews Guy Murchie
Mariner Books, 1999
Desert Island Material I can't remember how I first heard of this book--probably from reading book reviews on Amazon. I must have been impressed with the reviews because I bought one but when I received my first copy I was disappointed to find that the copyright was dated 1978 and every third or fourth page was illustrated with detailed, hand-drawn sketches that reminded me of my high school Biology class where I made ...

The Wise Guy Cookbook: My Favorite Recipes From My Life as a Goodfella to Cooking on the Run 32 reviews Henry Hill, Priscilla Davis, ..., 2002
A GREAT read....and then there are the recipes! I have read this book TWICE, from cover to cover, including the jacket! Eventually, I got around to trying out the recipes.
A cook book is usually...for cooking! But this one is different! The author gives the reader an inside of what it is like to be in the Witness Protection Plan, a Government funded program that is not high on his list of preferences. The anecdotes are REAL. They are full of ...

Giraffes Can't Dance 61 reviews Giles Andreae, Guy Parker-Rees
Scholastic, 2005
Great self-esteem book for everyone. For a long time now I have been wanting to introduce self-esteem books to my older child. She is just three years old and I wasn't sure how much she is aware of `self' in order to grasp self-esteem.
Then couple of interesting things happened. One day she looked at me intently and declared, `Amma, I am brown. Appa is brown. My baby sister is brown. You are white. No Amma you are pink'. It took ...

A Sweetness to the Soul (Dreamcatcher Series #1) 23 reviews Jane Kirkpatrick
Multnomah Publishers, 1995
Like stepping back in time I have read A Sweetness to the Soul three times. The only other novels I have read more than three times is Mrs. Mike and Follow the River. Yes I love historical novels, how people settled this wonderful country. As I was reading this book for the third time I tried imagining this made into a movie-it would be as grand as dances with wolves. I know I am suppose to give a review about A Sweetness ...

Nobody 18 reviews Creston Mapes
Multnomah Books, 2007
You'll want to discuss this book among your best friends! It's interesting to me the kinds of choices we make in life and how they really can impact others. This book is still one of my top favorite reads. It's one of our book club favorites. Creston writes beautifully and I will recommend it over, and over again.

My River Chronicles: Rediscovering the Work that Built America; A Personal and Historical Journey 20 reviews Jessica DuLong
Free Press, 2009
Colorful and passionate - with a serious message Definitely the best book I've read all year. Dulong chronicles multiple, intersecting journeys - her journey from the dot com virtual world to a world of real things and craft, the life of a Hudson River fire boat from its birth as a essential part of the harbor infrastructure to an educational / historic vehicle - and the history of the Hudson River and related canals and tributaries as the ...

Comfortably Numb 20 reviews Guy Jones
1st Books Library, 2002
The Title Misleads While the state of comfortable numbness may be an appropriate description of USAF personnel doing long shifts on JSTARS or AWACS, that description does not apply to readers of Guy Jones' book with that title. Numb, maybe, over the first pages as Jones sets the stage a little slowly; but never comfortable and definitely not numb over the entire book. The promotional blurbs on the cover liken ...

Echoes of a Distant Summer 17 reviews Guy Johnson
One World/Ballantine, 2005
Worth reading again, and again, and again, and again... I loved both Guy Johnson's books. Living now in the bay area I can completely see the places he talks about in the book and picture myself there. I love the way he uses retrsopection and how well he links the two. I love Jackson Tremain's character and how the character evolves and changes when confronted with his grandfather's past. Can't believe or agree with Elizabeth's decision at the ...

Bitter, Party of One... Your Table is Ready: Relationship advice from a guy who has no business giving it. 21 reviews Larry Star
iUniverse, Inc., 2005
Bitter Never Tasted So Good! Bitter, Party of One... Your Table is Ready: Relationship advice from a guy who has no business giving it.
Too friggin funny! Star gets right to the marital nitty gritty, beginning with pepto-pink fingernails and ending with wide-ass-in-front-of-the-television humor. He definitely knows his topic: the insane female, or at least the one who merely wanted a wedding and not a marriage. When he ...

What You Have Left: A Novel 18 reviews Will Allison
Free Press, 2008
a few words tell a whopper of a story I wasn't intending on reading the entire book in one sitting, but I ended up doing so, simply because I couldn't put it down. I loved the succinct writing that left no opportunity for meandering but manages also to avoid confusing the reader. I loved Grandfather and wished he had lived longer to tell more of his story :) I wanted to rebel alongside her and have a beer with the husband and race ...

Independent Film Distribution: How to Make a Successful End Run Around the Big Guys 17 reviews Phil Hall

One book indie filmmakers should not miss After years of watching movies and perhaps having friends, family, and acquaintances tell you that you should write a screenplay or make a movie, you've decided that that's what you want to do with some of the months or years ahead. First, don't panic. Lots of people have had this epiphany before. It's a long journey, but the rewards can be rich if you remember that it's step by step, and not ...

So These Two Dead Guys Walk Into a Bar 22 reviews Witchy Woman
Triple Moon Press, 2006
You'll DIE laughing! ;-) This book is really really funny! And even though I laughed through it all, the thought that struck me was, how beautifully the author handles grief, sadness, abuse. She does not drown in self-pity even though she had every reason to, but instead she turned everything into something FUNNY! Most of the times when you read about the "bad times" she went through, you won't even feel like she's ...

The Unspoken Rules of Love What Women Don't Know and Men Don't Tell You (Hammond, Michelle Mckinney) 21 reviews Michelle McKinney Hammond, Joel Brooks
WaterBrook Press, 2004
One of the BEST books I have EVER read The title of the book caught my eye one day when I was in a Walgreens Store near my house, and I flipped through the chapter titles and decided to purchase the book. I began reading the book right away, and couldn't believe that the price was only $6.99 - this book packs a lot of wisdom, and other books on similar topics will cost you much more, but I'd hold this book up to any similar book ...

A Comedian's Guide to Theology 21 reviews Thor Ramsey
Regal Books, 2008
humor at its best in form, content, and goal! Thor Ramsey's "A Comedian's Guide to Theology" is a brilliantly funny work! I am VERY picky when it comes to media that many claim to be humorous (movies, books, stand-up comedians, etc.). In many instances, I find what many consider "funny" to be humorless, crass, or uninspired. However, I took a chance on this book after thumbing through it for the better part of an hour in a Borders. I found ...
