The Ghost and the Femme Fatale (Haunted Bookshop Mysteries, No. 4) 14 reviews Alice Kimberly
Berkley, 2008
Ghost & The Bookseller I am really enjoying these "ghost stories." The interaction between Mrs. McClure and Jack are heartwarming in their differences due to generation changes. I did miss the opening chapter dealing with Jack's death/murder in 1948 but there are other 'scenes' that do make up for the ommission. I look forward to how the relationship is dealt with between human and ghost in the future.

The Ghost and the Dead Deb (Haunted Bookshop Mystery) 17 reviews Alice Kimberly
Berkley, 2005
A Good Series Becomes Great I love this series! I was iffy on the first book wondering just how the author was going to convince me that there was a palpable heat between a ghost and a very much alive young woman, but she did, and now I'm into this series for the long haul. The frequent glimpses into Jack's past were enjoyable and the construct of Penelope joining him is an interesting twist with room to grow. This entry ...

The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark 395 reviews Carl Sagan, Ann Druyan
Ballantine Books, 1997
Pleasantly Surprised When I started reading this book, it seemed to go slow and I thought about giving up. But, as I went on, the relevance of what he wrote made more and more sense. When I was through, I was pleased that I had read it all the way through and now I am a much more critical thinker.

Batman: Haunted Knight 28 reviews Jeph Loeb, Tim Sale
DC Comics, 1996
Batman Fights Scarecrow and Mad Hatter The Scarecrow and Mad Hatter as real Batman villains, the way it should be! Not as filler characters as in other Halloween books like The Long Halloween and Dark Victory. Only problem is they are short stories since there are 3 stories in this book. The last story sucks so much as Bruce Wayne gets visited by spirits of his past a la A Christmas Carol.

The Ghost and Mrs. McClure (Haunted Bookshop Mystery) 36 reviews Alice Kimberly
Berkley, 2004
The Ghost and Mrs. McClure This was a fun, light read that kept me entertained, chuckling, and guessing who-done-it until close to the end. If you like to flirt with the paranormal, enjoy mystery/crime novels (there are a lot of references to other authors in the book), and like a little humor mixed in then you will enjoy this one.

The Haunting of Hill House (Penguin Classics) 324 reviews Shirley Jackson
Penguin Classics, 2006
Set the horror standard for me! I first read "The Haunting of Hill House" as a lonely, unpretty, extremely bookish 13-year-old girl, at that time a purchase from the Scholastic Book Club for Teens. The only way I can describe the book's effect on me is to say that it was enormously jolting, and that I have used it as the standard by which I judge the entire horror genre ever since. Needless to say, many, many other works fall ...

Haunted (Women of the Otherworld, Book 5) 63 reviews Kelley Armstrong
Spectra, 2005
How far would you go to protect those you love? When Eve Levine (while alive, a witch not afraid of using Dark Magic to reach her goals and protect herself and her daughter Savannah) is called by the Fates to do them the favor owed (see Industrial Magic (Women of the Otherworld, Book 4)), she is taken by surprise. It seems that there is a nasty spirit out there - a demi-demon called the Nix - who has escaped from her hell dimension and is ...

Haunted: A Novel 101 reviews Chuck Palahniuk
Anchor, 2006
A fantastic reading experience! I LOVED this book. The writing is excellent. The author managed to bring out a different voice for each story. There was not a false moment in the narration--it all rang true. By the end I felt like I knew these characters. In our "reality show" culture where there are so many vivid examples of how group think/survival situations can bring out the worst in people this novel is great social ...

The Ghost and the Dead Man's Library (Haunted Bookshop Mystery) 15 reviews Alice Kimberly
Berkley, 2006
Penelope Peruses Poe What could be more enjoyable for mystery book lovers than a mystery series set in a mystery bookshop? I have thoroughly enjoyed each entry in this series and this third book was no exception. The atmosphere of these books is light but still serious enough to make the story believable and a great continuity of characters helps to keep this series glued together in a very admirable manner.

In the Haunted House 5 reviews Eve Bunting
Clarion Books, 1994
Read it, love it! My son and I have read this book over and over and over again. Whether it's Halloween time or not this book will be a sure favorite of kids' who like the dark side. Don't take this to mean that the book is dark or scary. What I mean is that if your kids have a taste for spookies then this book will not fail to please. Great pictures with subtle hidden pictures that show that the spookies and ...

The House of the Seven Gables (Signet Classics) 68 reviews Nathaniel Hawthorne
Signet Classics, 2001
More fun than I thought it would be Purchased in anticipation of a trip to Salem, MA to visit the actual House of the Seven Gables, I have to admit that I enjoyed this book far more than I thought I was going to. Written in 1851, The House of the Seven Gables is at once both a period romance and history of the Pyncheon family, focusing on a several week period of the lives of the current owner, Hepzibah Pyncheon, her brother ...

I was reading several other books first so I let my granddaughter read this 1st and she read it in one day. The House Next Door 75 reviews Anne Rivers Siddons

The House Next Door I first picked up this book in 1983. Twenty-five years later, I can tell you that this book is one of my favorite horror stories.
Anne Rivers Siddon lulls you into a false security, using home and hearth- a false normalcy - and then smacks you with such supreme horror it rocks you. Her secret,I have noticed, is to allow you to believe that honor, faith in love, and hope in friendships will ...
