Hippo-not-amus4 reviews
Tony Payne, Jan Payne

Orchard, 2004

Outstanding book!
We found this book in the bookstore, and my husband read it to our 2 1/2 year old who was totally enthralled by it. I have since read it myself and have just ordered it from amazon.com. It's a charming book, very well written and beautifully illustrated. The story is about a young hippo who is tired of being a hippo and wants to be something else. So he goes off and tries to be a variety of ...

Kiss Kiss!6 reviews
Margaret Wild

Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing, 2003

Early Language Skills
My 6-year-old is learning to read, and the repetition in this book gives her reading fluency a little boost. My 3-year-old daughter is not talking quite as fluently as she should, and this book is helpful for her because of 1) word repetition, 2) texture words with pictures that match, 3) prepositions such as over, under, behind, through, and so on. Both girls love the bold artwork.

A book to last a lifetime!!!!!!
I can remember my mom reading me this book over 25 years ago..... I memeorized it before I could even read! When I did learn to read it I never put it down. I now have the opportunity to read my original book to my 7 month old son. I still love reading it and having it read to me. As a child this book taught me valuable lessons and characters I would never forget. my favorite line at ...

The Wonderful Thing About Hiccups5 reviews
Cece Meng

Clarion Books, 2007

Teachers and librarians will find this a popular leisure read choice
A case of hiccups during story time in the library is the worst case scenario - especially if a hippo is involved. Janet Pedersen's rollicking, fun drawings pack a funny story of wet sisters, loud hippos, strange librarians and more which is unpredictable from start to finish - and delightfully different. Teachers and librarians will find this a popular leisure read choice, adding life and a ...

Hippos go berserk49 reviews
Sandra Boynton

Recycled Paper Press, 1977

Fun book you'll actually like reading out loud!
This book is fun reading that will entertain you as well as the kid. It's quick, easy reading, but has lots of pages so that the story doesn't end right away. I baby-sat an 18-month old toddler who loves books, and I didn't mind at all reading and re-reading this one. The words flow well, and I didn't feel awkward reading aloud the way I do with some other books. I will definitely buy this ...

Owen & Mzee: The True Story Of A Remarkable Friendship77 reviews
Isabella Hatkoff, Craig Hatkoff and Dr. Paula Kahumbu

Scholastic Press, 2006

An Astonishing Story on Friendship and Resilience
The well-written book portrays a heart-warming story about friendship. Mzee's love and guidance, along with Owen's resilience, proves that Science can't always explain what brings species together. The book contains factual material, as partially told by the general manager of Haller Park, Dr. Paula Kahumbu. Photographer Peter Greste brings this story to life with his photos that capture all the ...

George and Martha: The Complete Stories
Who doesn't love George and Martha with their dry sense of humor and deep affection for each other. Great investment and pleasure to read over and over again.

Owen & Mzee: Language Of Friendship16 reviews
Isabella Hatkoff, Craig Hatkoff and Dr. Paula Kahumbu

Scholastic Press, 2007

Owen & Mzee a Wonderful Book
I got this book for my 4 year old niece. As an animal lover, I knew she would be charmed, but I didn't expect the adults to be so enthralled. Everyone who picks up this book gets caught up in the story and pictures. Thank you.

This is the story of a young Giraffe who is afraid of heights, a young monkey who is afraid to climb trees, and a young hippo who is afraid of water. Hot Hippo3 reviews
Mwenye Hadithi

Little Brown & Co (Juv), 1986

Absolutely charming
Mwenye Hadithi writes wonderful animal fables. Hippo is amongst his sweetest. I wish the book was still in hardcover! Makes an excellent read-aloud, and the watercolor illustrations are a great complement.

A Monkey Among Us3 reviews

HarperFestival, 2004

Fun book!
I love this book! The words have a very rhythmic flow, which makes it fun to read. The cover says that the author is a drummer...you can tell by the cadence of the book. And the graphics use bold colors, which my infant loves. I just wish it was longer, because it's so fun to read. It's easy to memorize, and I often repeat it to my infant without using the book, as I bounce him in time with the ...

The Blue Faience Hippopotamus3 reviews
Joan Marshall Grant

Simon & Schuster (Juv), 1991

The Quest of the Hippopotamus
"The Blue Faience Hippopotamus" is one of the most beautiful books I've ever read, a story for both children and adults. The writing is top notch, featuring what is almost a "hero's quest" for children, ending with an exquisite example of unselfishness and the true gift of love and life. While similar in many ways to "The Velveteen Rabbit," it is neither an imitator nor an homage; I cry each ...

Maurice The Hippo-board (Venture-Health & the Human Body)4 reviews
Bos Marten

Scholastic, 1998

The book is greatly entertaining to toddlers.
This book might seem silly to the adult at first, but the more you read it to your requesting toddler the more it starts to make sense. A shy hippo is lead unknowingly through different situations to eventually arrive at his birthday party. The colors are attention grabbing and the tone you develop while reading it aloud becomes as entertaining to you as to your listener.

The Happy Hippopotami3 reviews
Bill Martin Jr

Voyager Books, 1992

We LOVE this book!!
This is a great book to read to antsy kids. My child not only istened, but got very involved with the characters, soon WE were a hippopota-family! Who can resist saying, "Hippopotamama"? The text flows beautifully and the illustrations are playful and just perfect for this tale! If you loved the Happy Hippopotomi, then I wholeheartedly recommend, "The Maestro Plays" also by Bill Martin, Jr.

Ruby and the Noisy Hippo (Ruby)3 reviews
Helen Stephens

Kingfisher, 2000

Have you ever had an embarrassing friend?
I mean really embarrassing. The sort of person you invited to a dinner party, and your spouse asks "Why on earth did you invite that imbecile?" and you reply "I only invited him to be polite, I didn't think he'd actually come." Our morals are challenged when reading this book. When we have an embarrassing friend, should we still cleave to that person or should we make every effort to be ...
