Dark Materials a Triple Threat or Three Times a Charm? Awesome Novels!
When I saw the Golden Compass movie The Golden Compass (New Line Platinum Series Two-Disc Widescreen Edition) and the excellent acting of Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig (much different than his 007 role that same year, obviously), I wanted to read the book. Then I saw the reviews of the trilogy written by Phillip Pullman and was taken aback by the lower star reviews, accusations of religious ...

An Amazingly Crafted Fantasy for Children and Adults Alike
My interest in the His Dark Materials series stemmed from watching the movie adaptation of the first book, The Golden Compass. And while I was biased because I saw the movie before reading the book, the book turned out to be far better than the movie ever was. Pullman creates a fantasy world that instantly engages the reader, and keeps them wondering, What will happen (and what CAN happen) in ...

It's like a ride in a supercharged V8
This book is one of the best middle books of any trilogy ever written. Northern Lights develops the characters, introduces the reader to the world(s) of this series and then just when the story gains significant momentum, the first part meets its end. The second book is like a ride in a roller coaster and it is action packed from the word go. 1- Characters: Pullman introduces new characters ...

I was not disappointed.
Smitten: A Long Time Ago...in a Far Away Land... I finished the Amber Spyglass. With the first book, Golden Compass I was hooked. The action, adventure, and twists of the Golden Compass and then the Subtle Knife put me anxiously into the final book, The Amber Spyglass. I loved the characters Lyra, Will, the witches, the bears, the Egyptians, the angels, the ghosts, the harpies, even Lyra's ...

"Unstageable' was the first reaction of the National Theatre's artistic director, Nicholas Hytner, to the idea of dramatizing His Dark Materials . But last night's opening night has triumphantly proved him wrong."- The Sunday Times Nicholas Wright has revisited his adaptation of Philip Pullman 's best-selling fantasy trilogy, tightening and improving it, and this revised version is to be published alongside the reopening in the National ...

Opened up my world.
After having read the trilogy and thinking about it a long time, I was curious about this book. To be totally subjective, I loved the format and printing of the book. Then, it also made me think even more about the trilogy. I welcomed the illumination of such a dense work. It brought up many details that I have either forgotten or glossed over. I appreciate this book and have purchased it for ...

The Science of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials
Mary & John Gribbin have created a well organized and eaily understood science guide to the authentic physics behind Philip Pullman's epic work. The Gribbins combine good, clear writing with a thurough understanding of phyisics that leads to simple explanations a layman can understand. With out this valualbe work, Mr. Pullman's fantastic tale would remain simply a 'story' underpinned by ...

Resources should always be shiny.
There's no better recommendation for a reference book than when the author of the original series states that he's using it to help him remember his own books. And this reference has just such a recommendation. This is an awesome source, part concordance, part encyclopedia, part character guide. It's a great companion and helped me innumerable times when I was looking for an elusive quote. I ...

An amazing reference
The essays in this collection are wonderful references for any critical look at HIS DARK MATERIALS. It was a constant go-to for me while writing my thesis. The essays are organized well and cover a broad range of topics. Since criticism on HDM is so new, it is sometimes difficult to find essays that directly relate to the trilogy as literature. This was the first source I found for academic work ...

Among the greatest
His Dark Materials are wonderful. They have so much suspense, action, thrills, and adventure, you will never put them down. By the way, you have to buy the whole set or else they won't make any sense to you. The characters are great. The objects are great. The BOOKS are great! There are so many amazing ideas. There are fantasy creatures and fantasy places that are very cool. You will love ...

Review by His Dark Materials fansite webmaster
The book is divided into five chapters: The Novelist, The Novels, The Novels' Reception, The Novels' Performance, and Further Reading and Discussion Questions. The first chapter is a 13-page biography of Philip Pullman, and a compact analysis of Pullman's works. The chapter "The Novels" gives a complete analysis of His Dark Materials, reviewing the many different aspects of the books, from Dust ...

Once Upon a Time in the North
Once Upon a Time in the North by Philip Pullman: It's been some time since Philip Pullman has published anything set in the world of His Dark Materials; the last offering was a very short story called Lyra's Oxford. In Once Upon a Time in the North, Pullman returns with an original tale about Lee Scoresby the aeronaut, weighing in at just under a hundred pages - and while fans would wish for ...

Phillip Pullman's "His Dark Materials"
I saw and enjoyed the movie "The Golden Compass." Later, I learned from a relative that it was anti Christian. Not sensing this from the movie, and wishing to understand the issue, I purchased this book and "Discovering the Golden Compass" by George Beahm. My overall impression after reading Leonardo Wheat's book is either he has a very active imagination or is compulsively dedicated to making ...

Envigorating read
This book is an invigorating read. It has action from beginning to end. I do not find it to be counter to my faith as a Christian at all. If I believed my faith to be one that hemmed me in and one that was binding, it would be contrary to my faith. However, I find Christianity to be liberating and the key to an abundant life, and I find nothing like this prohibited or attacked in this book.

A Thoughtful Christian Perspective on the work of Philip Pullman
There has been a strong outcry within the religious community about the anti-Christian worldview of Philip Pullman with movements to boycott The Golden Compass film and the books. Instead of joining the boycott (which traditionally doesn't work and only drives more people toward whatever is being boycotted), I decided to read Kurt Bruner & Jim Ware's insight. Each chapter of this book opens ...

Finally A Sane and Logical Approach To Philip Pullman's Trilogy
This past week I was sent a disturbing email in regard to the upcoming movie release of "The Golden Compass" based on the novel of the same title by Philip Pullman. After reading the article which was linked to the email and talking with a homeschooling mommmy friend who has actually read Pullman's trilogy I began to read Tony Watkin's book. Watkin's book covers the topic of this controversial ...
