Iliad and Odyssey boxed set34 reviews
Homer

Penguin Classics, 1999

The ground is dark with blood
The Iliad With many books, translations are negligible, with two obvious exceptions, one is the Bible, and surprisingly the other is The Iliad. For example: "Rage--Goddess, sing the rage of Peleus' son Achilles, Murderous, doomed, that cost the Achaeans countless losses, hurling down to the House of Death so many souls, great fighters' souls. But made their bodies carrion, feasts ...

The Complete Adventures of Homer Price59 reviews
Robert McCloskey

Barnes & Noble Books, 1998

Nostalgic hilarity for young people and adults as well!
You'll roll on the floor holding your splitting sides when you read about Homer Price and the crazy doughnut machine. This is great midwestern 40s stuff, still suitable today for both early teens and self-actualized adults alike. Homer Price is a kid who's oblivious to difficult challenges. His antics causes each of us to mentally return to the days when frutrations were few and obstructions ...

Homer Hickam

A Christmas to Remember
Dr. Werner von Braun once said, "Matters of faith are not really accessible to our rational thinking. I find it best not to ask any questions, but to just believe..." These words are truly conveyed throughout the second of Homer Hickam Jr.'s memoirs, The Coalwood Way, originally published in 2000. Although following his acclaimed, Rocket Boys, this compelling story does not continue where the ...

Torpedo Junction: U-Boat War Off America's East Coast 194227 reviews
Homer Hickam

Dell, 1991

Very Good Book
Torpedo Junction is a very educational and interesting book about German submarines destroying numerous ships and their cargos and many deaths. It is historically accurate and enlightening. Once you start this book, it is difficult to put down. I recommended it to anyone interested in history, WWII and what happened on the East Coast of the U.S., particularly from New Jersey to North Carolina.

Odyssey14 reviews
Homer

Hackett Publishing Company, 2000

Eminently readable and true to the original text
Lombardo's translation of the Odyssey, as well as his Iliad and Aeneid, receive much-deserved kudos as the most readable translations available. He writes with poetic and colloquial English that makes it easy for the lay person to understand. Unfortunately, many of these same lay readers bash Lombardo's translations because they assume the personable nature of the writing makes it ...

A Boy, a Cave, a Dog, Dead Bodies and it's a Mystery. . .What's Not to Love!!
I have to agree with another review the cover of this book just hooked me. This came into the library where I work (5/6 grade) and I immediately snagged it. Read it in one night and have not seen the book on our shelves since!!! It has been out constantly since we put it in the collection. Our kids like it (mainly the boys and our teachers love it!!). There's action and creepiness. The ...

October Sky534 reviews
Homer Hickam

Dell, 1999

Amazing True Story
Homer Hickam grew up in a rural isolated mountain town but went on to win the National Science Fair. This book is his story and how he was successful. I bought 24 copies of this book to inspire my advanced 6th grade Reading class. They loved the book. In our discussions they mentioned never giving up. Homer and his friends kept trying until they had success. Thank you for sharing your ...

Homer For The Holidays: The Further Adventures of Wilson the Pug16 reviews
Nancy Levine, Wilson the Pug

Amazon Remainders Account, 2004

Lovely pugs!
"Homer For The Holidays: The Further Adventures of Wilson the Pug" is a lovable book because of the lovable pugs within this magical story. As a pug lover, of course my face will soften and my spirits will rise at the sight of the pugs in the story, but non-pug adorers will still feel the joy when the read this delightful heartwarming story that can be enjoyed in and out of the holiday season. ...

The Odyssey by Homer14 reviews
Homer

Penguin Audio, 2005

Outstanding rendition
This is an absolutely fabulous product, but if you are not used to listening to audio books, I should give you a warning. This product is 11 CD's of one person speaking for about 13 hours. Can you imagine sitting down in the morning at home and staring at the wall for 13 hours while same voice goes on and on, all day and into the night? No, that won't work. So you at least have to break up ...

Donna Ciocca

Oak Manor Publishing, Inc., 2004

Great, Laugh-out-loud book.
This book is like an advanced version of Captin Underpants aimed at fith and sixth grade, but funny for all ages. I read this book in two days, and it would have only taken me one if I did not have so much homework. That is how hard this book was to put down!!!!! For this book, even five stars is not high enough!

Centerburg Tales: More Adventures of Homer Price8 reviews
Robert McCloskey

Puffin, 1977

Homer Price redux
This is a great sequel to the original "Homer Price". Homer and his friends are off on more wacky adventures, each one funnier than the last. The final story, in which Homer and his fellow citizens are literally dancing all over town, is one of the most hilarious children's tales ever written. McCloskey had magic in his writing pen and his drawing pencil; it's hard to say which are better, the ...

David Edwin, Jr. Harrell

University Alabama Press, 2002

Not Just for Homer Hailey Fans
Ed Harrell does a masterful job of relating the amazing life of Homer Hailey, one of the most dedicated, humble, and influential preachers in the churches of Christ in the 20th century. If you were fortunate enough to know this man, you will be fascinated by the story of his life and career as preacher, teacher, and author. But this book is far more than a biography of Homer Hailey. In the book, ...

The Iliad8 reviews
Homer

Wildside Press, 2003

The Iliad of Homer, Translated by Alexander Pope
The two classic verse (English) translations of Homer's Iliad & Odyssey are by George Chapman (1611) and Alexander Pope (1725). A classic prose translation of both works is the one by Lang, Leaf, and Myers (Iliad), and Butcher, Lang (Odyssey). A good, literal prose translation from the 1890's of the Odyssey is the George Herbert Palmer. Good literal, modern prose translations of both works are ...

The Lost Books of The Odyssey: A Novel11 reviews
Zachary Mason

Starcherone Books, 2008

Surprisingly Visceral
When the author gave his first reading of this book in New York he spoke about the book in clinical terms; its use of mathematical principles, the book as a study of recursion. But this book could not be less clinical. Though the tale is told in vignettes, each offers a different window into a sliver of the human condition with all its pain and drama and the emotions that motivate a human life. ...

Red Helmet12 reviews

Thomas Nelson, 2008

Terrific book by a great writer.
I bought this book the first day it came out and enjoyed it tremendously. There's even the speech Homer Hickam made at the memorial to the Sago miners in the back of the book. I got to meet him at a book signing and he is a gracious man. There were a lot of people at the book signing who enjoyed Mr. Hickam's writing as much as me. He is without a doubt West Virginia's favorite author.

The Sobs of Autumn's Violins13 reviews
A. R. Homer

Llumina Press, 2005

An Intelligent Spy Thriller from WWII
Author A. R. Homer creates a captivating story of the D-day invasion and all that leads up to it by mixing actual historic facts with both real and fictional characters. His novel, "The Sobs of Autumn's Violins - A Novel of War and Love," is a wonderfully creative and devious mixture of history and imagination. Although this is only Homer's second novel, he is already being viewed as one of ...

Sweet and Happy
We all need more sweet and happy in our lives, and Betty Dravis' short story, Homer, Hector, and the Smashed up Jag provides a big dose. Once again, Ms Dravis' talent and creativity shine through in this little gem. I was completely captivated by this tale. It is a true page turner. In just a few short pages, Ms. Dravis' brings her characters to life, full of personality and self. We know ...

Fear diminishes the quality of life.........Don't let it!!
We Are Not Afraid is a very inspiring book about strength and courage in perilous times. I think everyone who reads this will come away a stronger individual for it. If you have children, sons, daughters, nieces or nephews I think it is even more important to read this!!! The book was just such a "thinker". It is only 213 pages, it reads quickly but it lasts long after you close the cover. ...
