Les Miserables 8 reviews Victor Hugo
Amereon Limited, 1990
"Les Miserables" : Victor Hugo's grestest achievement If you are the kind of person thirsting for the image of Man as a being to whom nothing is impossible - and to whom everything great is possible, then "Les Miserables" is the novel for you. With a few exceptions, such as Ayn Rand, there is no writer in world literature who has portrayed such a grand, noble, sublime and inspiring image of man as Victor Hugo. In "Les Miserables", Hugo has given ...

Les Miserables, Vol. 2 2 reviews Victor Hugo
Blackstone Audiobooks, 1996
What an excellant book! :) Les miserables is a really good book because even though it has more than one book in it, it still flows from one story to the next and I think that this is a really good book and that this is the biggest and most wonderful masterpiece ever written in the history of the world.

Les Miserables (Penguin Classics) 40 reviews Victor Hugo
Penguin Classics, 1982
Of course its a classic! Hugo weaves his tale for the ages in and around his personal, social and political history of 19th-Century France. His accomplishment is stunning to the extent that he keeps the reader interested during the long, seemingly-disconnected framing passages and intently riveted when the connections come together and the reader is enriched and the story enveloped in Hugo's masterwork. For example a ...

Les Miserables 9 reviews Victor Hugo
Fixot, 1998

Modern Library, 2008
Translations matter -- and this succeeds beautifully Many years ago, while commuting from Scotch Plains to Manhattan and back, I made use of my commute time to read some very big books. Some, like Larry McMurty's LONESOME DOVE, were magisterial in story, setting and character. Some were Dumas' THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO (a killer of a tale). And then there was LES MISERABLES.
I was 26 years old and had never read such a sprawling narrative that ...

Les Miserables (Everyman's Library) 12 reviews Victor Hugo
Everyman's Library, 1998
An Inspiring Masterpiece My two favorite classics of all time are LES MISERABLES and THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV. Interestingly, I've read that Fyodor Dostoevsky was a great admirer of Victor Hugo and of Les Miserables in particular. To me, what these two authors have in common is the profound psychological and spiritual insight found in their work. Les Miserables, for instance, is the most heartbreaking but uplifting story ...

Les Miserables 255 reviews
Fictionwise Classic, 2003
Every Christian Should Read This Book I have read this incredible work of art several times and never cease to be amazed by the enormous impact it has on me. The first time I ever read it, I cried off and on for about three days, I was so moved. Victor Hugo tapped into something profound when he penned this story. It is long, yes, but I find that every little rabbit trail Hugo goes down has a very important point. I can just read the ...

A masterpiece. Revolution and romanticism together. It is a masterpiece of the universal literature. How Victor Hugo tellus about the french revolution and all the new ideas and concepts which brought it to all of us. The life of the characters with all their problems and neccessities, the amazing way to describe the character circumtances and their internal thoughts (in and out at the same time). After reading this book you will not be the same ...

Les Miserables (A Stepping Stone Book) 5 reviews Victor Hugo
Random House Books for Young Readers, 1995
A Great Story Retold by a Great Author! My 3rd grader read this book for a homeschool assignment. We try to introduce the classics whenever we can. I was so impressed by this book, I've told all my homeschool girlfriends about it. The raw emotion and suspense is captured in this book, but the negative elements (prostitution, for example) are left out, making this very suitable for an elementary student. My reluctant-to-read child ...

Les Miserables (Modern Library) 43 reviews Victor Hugo
Modern Library, 1992
We should be better for reading it... ... but this was the most popular book, read by soldiers, North and South, during our Civil War. We should be better for hearing democracy in Beethoven, piety in Bach, compassion in Mozart -- and perhaps we do, one person at a time, but I fear we are always running out of time.
I read this book thirty years ago, over two winters, setting it down midway in March 1977 I believe. I had heard a ...

Les Miserables 1 review Victor Hugo
Fawcett, 1987
Hugo's Action + Dickens like Depth = Best Story Ever Written This abridged version by Fawcett is an excellent choice. A lot of reviewers get hung up on this being abridged or say that it must be read in its original French. I have not read the unabridged version and I couldn't read it in the original French if I wanted to. The preface to this book points out that the material cropped are mostly long treatments on the sewer systems and French politics not ...

Les Miserables 1 review Victor Hugo
Ann Arbor Media Group, 2004
Borders Classics Edition Borders Classics Edition. Hardback. 2004. This abridged edition of the massive Les Miserables translated by Charles Wiblur. I don't know if a paperback edition is available by now. I would recommend, however, this Hardback edition as the paperback binding is likely to crack after some time (because, even though it is abridged version, the book will surely take quite a bit of time to finish!)

Les Miserables 1 review Victor Hugo
Dramatic Pub., 1987
Excellent Dramatic High School Play for Production This full-length drama in two acts has roles for 30 players and runs about 2 hours. It is very well-written in terms of dramatic scene structure. The scene transitions between the numerous locales can be handled very smoothly with one unit set. It has strong educational and theatrical value for high school level actors and audiences. The themes of romance and revolution are highly appealing ...

Les Miserables 1 review
EbooksLib, 2004
Tragedy, Triumph, and Redemption Les Miserables is not the story of any one man. Rather, it is a story of society. Victor Hugo's characters are based around one of the most important periods of history. The events and downfalls portrayed in this novel should be grasped by everyone of our present-day society. People today believe we have it bad. People today think that a day at the office is stressful. People think that the ...

LONG BUT WORTH IT Les MIserables was too good. Everything made perfect sense and it all ties up well at the end. It's the only thing i've read by Victor Hugo so far but I hope to look more into his other novels because he is such a good writer. I enjoyed reading this very much and always read ahead when my teaher assigned pages for class. I didn't like the movie as much, it was too vague at times. Infact i want to ...

A story worth reading...and telling This review and recommendation comes from not only me, but 22 first-graders as well. We all agree that you must read this book. While reading it during the school year I told the story to my first-graders upon finishing a section at home. They looked forward to it eagerly, often asking if I could continue the story, sometimes during recess. And first-graders don't willingly give up their ...
