Balzac : La Com??die humaine, tome 1 :Bibliotheque de la Pleiade (French Edition)1 review
Honor?? de Balzac

Gallimard, 1976

Just a little spelling correction
It's Balzac's La Comédie Humaine (& not Humane). It would be nice if you could correct this in your listing. Otherwise, what can be said is that Balzac is to French novels what Shakespeare is to British plays, i.e. an author capable of writing masterpiece after masterpiece.

Lost illusions (Comédie humaine)16 reviews
Honoré de Balzac

Avil, 1902

Swimming among sharks
This is one of the best novels by Balzac, which is to say much, since he is still one of the best writers that have ever lived. Here, as in the rest of his work, the reader can appreciate Balzac's knowledge of worldly life, and especially the world of business, so alien to other writers. In this book he elaborates on the printing business as well as on journalism -vastly so-, back when it first ...

Fights, games, and debates1 review
Anatol Rapoport

University of Michigan Press, 1967

This book positively affected the way I deal with life
I read this book as a young man and dellighted to find I can now get another copy to replace my long lost volume. The book gives very clear explanations of game theory, zero-sum and non-zero sum, game trees and related subjects. It then goes on to weave a philosophy of civilized communication based on the mathematics. The style is clear and pleasant to read, and what ought to be a dry ...

Condition Humaine2 reviews
Andre Malraux

Hodder & Stoughton Ltd, 1974

This book is a must and a classic !!
This is a reference among Malraux's writings, because it describes perfectly his own obsessions. Malraux has traveled a lot, and has experienced a lot of different concepts, and a lot of different situations. He started by exporting stolen antiques in Thailand, and spent some time in prison there. He was a convinced communist, and went to several countries, where revolution were occuring in ...

Jean-Jacques Rousseau et la medecine naturelle (Collection Exploration : Sciences humaines) (French Edition)1 review
Serge A Theriault

Editions Univers/L'Aurore, 1979

J.J. ROUSSEAU & NATURAL MEDICINE
Individual and collective hygiene are integral part of J.J. Rousseau's thought. For him, like those who held neo-hippocratic principles of the 18th century, nature is the great healer; toxemia (accumulation of catabolic wastes or toxins into the body) is the cause of diseases; enervation is at the origin of metabolic problems; and education must favor the development of body and mind. Two ...

Clinical anatomy and pathophysiology for the health professional1 review
Joseph V Stewart

Medmaster, 1989

Finally - an A&P book students will read & use!
Due to a variety of departmental situations, I must continue touse one of the many "standard" (voluminous) A&P texts inmy classes (for a variety of reasons:) In reality, THIS is the book I suggest to the many students who don't have the time, or background, to read the "tomes". The diagrams are simple & easy to understand. The text/format is pure and simple - with only those concepts covered ...

Catherine de' Medici (Philosophical studies. La comédie humaine)1 review
Honoré de Balzac

Little, Brown, 1906

Drama Galore!
Balzac guided European fiction away from the overriding influence of Walter Scott and the Gothic school, by showing that modern life could be recounted as vividly as Scott recounted his historical tales, and that mystery and intrigue did not need ghosts and crumbling castles for props. Maupassant, Flaubert and Zola were writers of the next generation who were directly influenced by him, and ...

Anthony Trollope

The Century co, 1902

Barchester Towers: The second in the delightful Barsetshire Novels by a Great Victorian Novelist brings hours of pleasure !
Anthony Trollope (1815-1882) has earned his place in the pantheon of great English Victorian authors. His greatest novels are those in the Barsetshire series dealing with the clergy and the Palliser novels concerned with politics focusing on the Palliser family. The first novel in the Barsetshire series "The Warden"introduces us to the Rev. Septimus Harding and his charming daughters Eleanor ...

The quest of the Absolute (Comédie humaine of Honoré de Balzac. Authorised cabinet ed. / edited by George ...2 reviews
Honoré de Balzac

Croscup & Sterling, 1899

Philosophal Stone and psychology
You'll have to like slow-rated stories... but that one will seduce you! There's some fantastic in it, with the famous quest of the Philosophal Stone. And also many psychology, with the interaction of all those souls living together in a rich house in Belgium. The first pages of that book are VERY important, explaining WHY Balzac just does not like to enter his novels "in medias res". Of course ...

Old Goriot (Comédie humaine of Honoré de Balzac. Authorised cabinet ed. / edited by George Saintsbury)15 reviews
Honoré de Balzac

Croscup & Sterling, 1899

A Classic Tale of Unconditional Love
"To a father growing old nothing is dearer than a daughter." Euripides "Noble natures cannot long endure this world. How indeed should deep and noble feeling find a place in such a shallow, petty, mean society?" p. 282 "Old Goriot" This classic novel by Balzac simply busted up my heart. It's so depressing; that reading it was the like watching the last half hour of "Brian's Song" times ...

Cousin Pons (Comédie humaine of Honoré de Balzac. Authorised cabinet ed. / edited by George Saintsbury)3 reviews
Honoré de Balzac

Croscup & Sterling, 1899

great work, painful to read
This work, like all of Balzac's works, possesses his style, namely his perceptive insights into a Parisian's sole and the fabric of society during that time. Had these observations been relevent only to Paris of that time (the book takes place 1844-46) this book would not have the impact it does. I can almost imagine any one of these characters existing today, and wouldn't be surprised to open ...

The Absentee, (The English comédie humaine)2 reviews
Maria Edgeworth

Century, 1904

Anglo-Irish Look at Ireland
Too often remembered solely as a British author, Maria Edgeworth's "The Absentee" provides a wonderful depiction of Ireland during the height of England's attempts to colonize Ireland through plantations. The historical problem with these estates was the often absence of the Lord. Edgeworth's novel reveals her Anglo-Irish stature. It depicts the Irish as either primitive and lacking ethics or ...

Mythe et epopee (Bibliotheque des sciences humaines) (French Edition)1 review
Georges Dumezil

Gallimard, 1995

"A more than encyclopedic master..."
"A more than encyclopedic master" is what Claude Levy-Strauss called Georges Dumezil in his speech in the ceremony of induction in the French Academy. And the description is only slightly exaggerated. This great scholar, rescuer of a lost language (Ubykh) and knower of more than forty, discoverer of a whole vast cultural complex, and capable, when he wanted to, of dabbling at will in Hebraic ...
