Miller with illustrations by Jon Van Zyle, the official artist of the dogsled race and a two-time participant in the Iditarod, is a children's book, ages 7 to 10, published in 2002 by Walker & Company. Running With Champions: A Midlife Journey on the Iditarod Trail13 reviews
Lisa Frederic

Alaska Northwest Books, 2006

chance encounter
On a recent trip to Alaska's Denali National Park, my wife and I were fortunate to have an extremely knowledgeable tour guide who had spent the last 27 years in Alaska, first as a commercial fisherman(or fisherwoman) and now as a dog trainer/fisherman/tour guide. Only in passing, at the end of our delightful 8 hour tour, did she mention that she had completed the Iditarod (at age 42). Seeing ...

Gary Paulsen

Perfection Learning Prebound, 1995

Excellent, very well written book!
I read this book a few years ago, and it practically had me rolling on the floor laughing at times. Finally got it for myself to own, and it's still every bit as good. Gary Paulsen has a wonderful way with words, and is an excellent storyteller. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone.

Akiak : A Tale from the Iditarod5 reviews
Robert J. Blake

Philomel, 1997

A heartwarming dog story from the land of bitter cold!
We recently added "Akiak" to our elementary school library collection, because one of our primary classes was following this year's Iditarod. It instantly became a popular title, and several other classes have thoroughly enjoyed it as a read-aloud. I can see "Akiak" becoming an annual tradition, right before the first "mush" of the famous Alaskan sled-dog race. In frosty clear language, ...

Adventures of the Iditarod Air Force: True Stories About the Pilots Who Fly for Alaska's Famous Sled Dog Race4 reviews
Ted Mattson

Epicenter Press, 1997

It is a good book on a subject not easy to record.
Ted acquaints the reader with stories that could only come from being a pilot himself. Having done some flying in the Alaskan bush, I became acquainted with the author and know of his intense love of the subject. I recommend readers also read "The Eye of the Rainbow", Ted Matson's first writing. You will have a greater respect of the Alaskan adventurer.

Dashing Through The Snow1 review
Sherry Shahan

Millbrook Press, 1997

I have read this book and find the photographs to be fantast
The photographs are fantastic to show what all is being described in this book. I found the material to be factual and presented in an interesting manner for an elementary student who wishes to write a report on sled dogs or sledogging as a sport. It would also be a good book to learn about sled dogs and their sport. I live in Alaska and follow sled dog activity. I have also written a ...

A. D. Tarbox, Freelance Reviewer for Midwest Book Review
I chose this book because I wanted to know more about sled dog racing. Wood does a wonderful job with photographs and text to tell the story of Dusty, a high schooler, and his sled dogs getting ready to race in the Jr. Iditarod in Alaska. This book is great for 8-12 year olds but adults will like it too. A. D. Tarbox, author of ALREADY ASLEEP (October 2006)

Great for anyone who loves sled dogs
Being partial to sled dogs myself (I am owned by two) I very much enjoyed leafing through this book. Good portraits of the various types of dogs which nowadays run this intense and challenging race. The photos and text give you a glimpse into the world of sled ...

The Mystery on Alaska' s Iditarod Trail (Carole Marsh Mysteries)2 reviews
Carole Marsh

Gallopade International, 2003

Great for Homeschoolers!
My son is ten and really enjoyed this book. I picked it up because he has really enjoyed the huskies on Nintendogs, and I thought he might like this tale. He did! We will be reading more of these mysteries! Carole Marsh uses real kids in her book. As far as a work of fiction, there is not that much imagination, but the stories are VERY real, and very educational. The dialog between the ...
