Cracking India: A Novel25 reviews
Bapsi Sidhwa

Milkweed Editions, 2006

Beautiful and tragic, Cracking India
This tragic story is very personal, as told by a young girl, Lenny Sethi (possibly autobiographical?) living in the Punjab region of northwest India during the few years prior to and after the partition of India. History is full of such terrible stories and horrible truths, but Cracking India has a very familial impact, and completely feminine perspective. We are allowed to become part of the ...

Beautful Pictures, Great Information!
I bought this book to start planning a trip to India that should happen in 2009 sometime. I love these books! The pictures are beautiful and the facts and information help in planning places that I need to see when I get there. I purchased my first Eyewitness Travels guides when I went to Poland two years ago, and will only use this series when planning future trips! They are wonderful!

In Spite of the Gods: The Rise of Modern India58 reviews
Edward Luce

Anchor, 2008

A Giant's Untapped Potential
One of the books about India that I've really enjoyed reading is Edward Luce's "In Spite of the Gods: The Rise of Modern India." One point Luce, a foreign correspondent in India for the Financial Times, makes very clear is that India has bypassed the industrial revolution by advancing directly from an agriculture economy to technology. Luce also correctly points out that one of India's ...

A Passage to India (MAXNotes Literature Guides) (MAXnotes)100 reviews
Ann Wood

Research & Education Association, 1996

East and West Can Never Meet
Almost a century after the book's publication the most crucial problems it discussed are as current as they were during Forster's life. The impossibility of communicating across the divide of culture, religion, and race, seems to be even more alive then when he saw it. The value of the novel lies not so much in representing it but in the fact that Forster offers a way out - personal contact. ...

A very well received student assistance
I am currently undertaking my last year of schooling and this thorough, historical text is an immense help. It is so helpful in providing Modern History students with the background and fine details of India through the years and is a fascinating read!!

India After Gandhi: The History of the World's Largest Democracy22 reviews
Ramachandra Guha

Harper Perennial, 2008

Discovery of India (independence onward)
If Nehru were to pick his choice of a historian to chronicle Indian history starting where he left off with his Discovery of India letters to Indira from 1942-46; he would probably have lived a decade longer in his excitement after finding Ramachandra Guha. Never before has a historian (or any human being for that matter) undergone the momentous task of uncovering and articulating the history of ...

Gunjan Bagla

Business Plus, 2008

Understand India for Business -- Written with Experience
This book is clearly written by someone who knows India and knows business -- and knows how to communicate about them clearly but succinctly. The sections on dealing with Indian culture reveal an insider's insight and are invaluable. As Mr. Bagla describes, a successful endeavor requires understanding the Indian mindset, and this book does a great job showing where it matches and where it ...

Island Life: Inspirational Interiors10 reviews
India Hicks, David Flint Wood

Harry N. Abrams, 2004

A book to take you away from everyday life
I found this book an absolute dream. The pictures are superb and the text is so unpretentious and simple. I loved the way the family has created such a simple and beautiful house (or houses) unlike so many of the gaudy mansions of the rich that inhabit the Bahamas. I have visited Harbor Island and the lifestyle appears so slow and easy that it really appears to be a paradise. India points out ...

Darsan: Seeing the Divine Image in India7 reviews
Diana L. Eck

Columbia University Press, 1998

Solid introduction to the concept of Hindu iconography and related ritual experience
Diana Eck is a wonderful scholar who has written several great books on Hinduism. Darsan (or "darshan," if you're transliterating it simply for an English-speaking audience) is a wonderfully simple introduction to Hindu iconography and the related ritual experience, a subject that is overwhelmingly broad and often unwieldy. If you are an undergraduate studying Eastern religions, a graduate ...

I am using this as a picture book.

My Job Went to India: 52 Ways to Save Your Job (Pragmatic Programmers)31 reviews
Chad Fowler

Pragmatic Bookshelf, 2005

52 Ways to be the "Best of the Best"
This book was a much needed wakeup call with respect to the realities of software engineering and the international market for those skills. We all understand that international competition is driving businesses to reduce costs by outsourcing software engineering projects, but few U.S. software engineers have a plan for countering the effects of this outsourcing. Chad Fowler's first hand ...

India: The Emerging Giant3 reviews

Oxford University Press, USA, 2008

Review: India: The Emerging Giant
Among all the books on India written by economists (recently there have been quite a few) this book has perhaps received the most favorable press. Reading this book one can easily discover the factors determining this disposition of the media. The book is a detailed work that does the delicate job of arriving at measured and researched judgments on India strikingly well. In effect the book ...

A Concise History of Modern India (Cambridge Concise Histories)1 review
Barbara D. Metcalf, Thomas R. Metcalf

Cambridge University Press, 2006

History conceived as medicine for Western imperialists and Hindus
As a relative newcomer to the history of India, I found this a decent introduction to the issues and approaches to them that have shaped modern Indian political life. The two central themes that emerge are first, the nature of colonial rule (under Britain, of course--the term is never used of Muslim masters, nor is "imperialism") and the process of separation from it, and second, the problems ...

South India (Regional Guide)7 reviews
Sarina Singh, Rafael Wlodarski, ...

Lonely Planet, 2007

Another strong title from Lonely Planet
I ventured to South India, Bombay and Goa, last January, and this book never left my side. As a first-time visitor to the country, I was nervous at first, but the information found in this book helped me to prepare adequately for the trip and navigate my way through this often confusing (but always amazing) country. The guide caters to travelers on a variety of budgets, and offers tips for ...
