Outstanding
Jhumpa Lahiri just keeps getting better and better. "Unaccustomed Earth" is her third book and her second collection of short stories. I'm amazed that she was able to top "Interpreter of Maladies" with such rich, emotional portraits of love and loss. This book contains eight stories, three of which are linked together, and like all of Lahiri's previous works, each story focuses on individuals ...

It's what Robert's Rules of Order is to parliamentary bodies
Iyengar himself has disavowed this book long ago...even so, it's the single greatest reference book out there. The first thing that will blow you away is the treatise on hatha yoga. The ease with which he describes the philosophy of yoga foreshadows his complete book on the subject. It's quite a foreshadowing! The bulk of the book is an exhaustive detailed pictorial and written ...

What a Beautiful Book
It's very rare to find a combination of tremendous writing, complex narrative, and memorable characters. Erdrich has managed this. In a book that moves from one point of view to another, it is often easy to lose track of where and when you are. Not here. Erdrich's characters are so distinct, their voices so strong and individual, that I never got lost. This is a story of a family, a community, ...

Excellent Reading!
Jhumpa Lahiri is an enthralling story teller. The short stories are riveting and gives you a keen sense of the emotions felt by each character in the stories. I read this in one weekend which is hard to do as a mom of 4-yr old twins working fulltime... I simply couldn't tear myself away from the pages. The ease with which she writes and depicts each character is superb.... Highly recommend this ...

Senseless violence viewed as the driver of all human destiny in a shocking Wild West setting
Around 1850, a gang of Americans roamed the U.S.-Mexico border. The Mexican government had contracted them to hunt down the Apaches and bring scalps back as proof, but the "Glangton gang" ended up ravishing innocent villages, robbing the inhabitants and scalping them instead. This episode forms the basis of Cormac McCarthy's 1985 novel BLOOD MERIDIAN: Or the Evening Redness in the West, which ...

The Best Book on the Subject, Period.
A few reviewers are making a big deal out of the discovery of a few factual errors in A TERRIBLE GLORY. Here's a revelation: this is a 500-page book of history. Every big historical book contains some errors--you can find them in David McCullough, too. It happens. But don't let that blind you to the fact that this is an excellent book. How do I know? Because I've read TONS of books on the ...

A Warm Novel
I read Island of The Blue Dolphins sometime before Christmas this year. It was a pleasure to read--it was simple, brief, and the characters were fresh and realistic. O' Dell used very descriptive writing, nevertheless, it did not go to where it is tedious to read because of the overload of words. If you do not like novels without much action besides attacks with sea critters I would not ...

A Good Read!
This book is well written, with interesting believable characters. If a child wonders what it would be like to be "different" in a community, this book would give him a good introduction. The protagonist in this book is confronting insecurities in himself and in his Navtive American community. For young people who wonder what it is like to live with differences, this book would be a good ...

Stepping Off the Edge: Learning & Living Spiritual Practice A classic in Native American literature, Ceremony tells the story of Tayo, a young Native man who returns from W.W.II with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Silko's masterful writing interweaves the personal, social and societal causes for Tayo's illness with traditional Native legends and cures. Beautiful, inspiring and very harsh. Like ...

A necessary read for students and teacher's of Vinyasa. Having practiced at the KYM mandiram and having met Desikachar makes this book even more amazing as he is a living vibration of this book.

This book is worth it's weight in gold
Pound for pound you'll never find a better book than this. Amazingly simple (just like Zen) yet incredibly profound (just like Zen). No matter what religious belief you adhere to, I promise you will find something in this book that will make your life better. This book is a quick read, but it is a book you will want to read over and over again. Make no mistake about it, my library and my ...

Four Thumbs Up
Hilarious, moving, smart, captivating. Like other reviewers here, I read slowly, hoping it wouldn't end. My favorite quality: the consistent smartness and edginess in each line. It's hard to write a comic novel that's funny from start to finish, but Adiga succeeds. Incredibly, it's also social commentary.

Terrific
The other reviewers have more than admirably summarized this book. It is a wonderful compilation of current thinking on the history of the Americas. Mr. Mann's writing takes you effortlessly into what could have been a very dry subject. I couldn't put this book down. Bravo and thank you Mr. Mann.

The Satanic Verses Through Western Eyes
I was a kid when the controversy around this book hit, and I guess for that reason I always thought it was a very heavy, tedious, high-brow work. In fact, "The Satanic Verses" is a fun and funny narrative. The style reminded me of Gabriel Garcia Marquez -- the lines between the supernatural and the mundane are erased. For Western readers who do not know as much about Islam as they might like ...

Blood, Thunder and Manifest Destiny
This is a terrific story told in a dramatic yet even handed fashion. It helps that much of Sides narrative is focused on Kit Carson, the famous scout whose exploits made him a Western legend and the subject of numerous pulp,"blood and thunder" Western novels. Carson comes off here as an authentic hero; modest, brave and resourceful, but also much more pragmatic than the wild West shoot-em-up ...

Great, Great Book!
Being from the Boston area, one cannot escape the legend that is the Mayflower. Yet, Mr. Philbrick's narrative brings the reader close-up to the struggles these brave people faced, not only when they crossed the North Atlantic, but the problems they faced when they came ashore. As an American History Teacher, this is probably the best book on the subject I have read. A terrific read!
