The No-Nonsense Guide to International Development (No-Nonsense Guides)4 reviews
Maggie Black

New Internationalist, 2007

"According to statistics she does not work!"
"ACCORDING TO STATISTICS SHE DOES NOT WORK!" That is the caption below a poster with a photograph of an African woman, lugging an enormous bunch of tree branches for firewood on her head, endlessly trailing through the Sahelian bush. The poster is published by what is probably the smallest and, typically, least publicized of all United Nations bodies, INSTRAW, the UN Institute for Research and ...

Top 10 Guide to New York City (Top 10 Travel Guides (Internationalists))2 reviews

Internationalist, 1999

This guide is a must for a great trip to New York.
I'm a single woman and I went to New York with a lot of trepidation. A friend gave me The Top 10 Guide as a going away present. I read it on the plane and I was so excited about the city by the time I got there. It's filled with inside hints and highlights of special places and things to do. The author shares his enthusiasm for the city and tells you the most important things to do to make ...

Top 10 Guide to Los Angeles (Top 10 Travel Guides (Internationalists))1 review
Katrina Tangen

Internationalist, 1999

A great guide to LA!
A great guide to LA! It highlights the best of LA so that you're not just wandering around this big city. It makes Los Angeles understandable and fun. The author highlights the most interesting places in Los Angeles; the Star hangouts, the best restaurants and the best attractions. And the coverage of Disneyland is just terrific. You can see the author really knows the park. It even includes ...

The World in Your Kitchen2 reviews

New Internationalist Publications Ltd, 1993

A real multi-cultural cookbook
There are a number of things that I like about this cookbook, in addition to the tasty recipes themselves. First, it really does cover most of the world (the only countries left out are Europe and the US/Canada but I guess the author figured we already get a lot of those cookbooks). There are recipes from Bangladesh, Bahamas, Cambodia, Ghana, Syria, Kenya, Thailand, Guatemala, Brazil, Jamaica, ...

Karl Radek: The Last Internationalist2 reviews
Warren Lerner

Stanford Univ Pr, 1970

addendum
Though I have not read this book about Radek, I wish to add this information as a follow-up to the previous review. It has been substantiated that both Radek and Sokolnikov were killed by fellow inmates in prison in 1939. See for reference "The Road To Terror: Stalin and the self-destruction of the bolsheviks, 1932-1939" by Getty and Naumov.

Don't Shoot the Clowns: Taking a Circus to the Children of Iraq1 review
Jo Wilding

New Internationalist, 2006

Jo Wilding is the greatest
Jo has more courage than anyone I know- she risked jail to try to break the blockade on Iraq, then brought her "Circus 2 Iraq" with some of her pals. She has plenty of stories to tell about the sanctions and about Fallujah, where she was when the u.s marines tried to destroy it. It's just amazing to read what she writes, and try to remember how those craven embeddeds with the flack jackets kept ...

The No-Nonsense Guide to Tourism (No-Nonsense Guides)1 review
Pamela Nowicka

New Internationalist, 2007

Disturbing.
The tourism industry is changing the world. It is easy to assume that tourism in the "Global South" (i.e. Africa, Latin America, Southern/Central Asia, the Mideast) is beneficial to impoverished people. Unfortunately, this assumption is largely false. As this book shows, the relationship is largely exploitative, and the local poor often gain far less than they lose. For socially conscious people ...

The Little Book of Rebels (Little Books)1 review

New Internationalist Publications Ltd, 2001

Inspiring, Funny
I picked up this little book in New Zealand almost two years ago at a fair-trade shop. But you don't have to be a hemp-wearing hippie to appreciate this collection of quotes that raise eyebrows, questions, and even goosebumps. The speakers and writers are famous (Jesus, Gandhi, Martin Luther King) or unknown, but each raises a point that will make your heart beat a little harder, and perhaps ...

Vanishing Footprints1 review

New Internationalist Publications Ltd, 2002

back to soul
The aim of this book to inspire, educate and warm peoples hearts, has definitely been achieved. It will take the reader back to a world where there is no need for money, fashion, media, advertising, and where happiness comes from what truly matters. I think every reader will be grateful for the reminder provided by this book, of how rich and diverse all people, and all places of this world are. ...

Spices of Life2 reviews
Troth Wells

New Internationalist Publications Ltd, 1996

A beautiful collection of spiced and seasoned recipes
The Spices Of Life is a beautiful collection of spiced and seasoned recipes from Africa, Asia and Latin America. Filled with fabulous color photos of the spices, foods, and market vendors, this cookbook is also a history book, for it traces the influences and development of trade for spices in the introduction. The spice guide in the beginning also contains much interesting information about ...

The No-Nonsense Guide to World Poverty (No-Nonsense Guides)1 review
Jeremy Seabrook

New Internationalist, 2007

Sobering
I don't know how objective the writing is, but the general picture of world poverty produced by this book makes it painfully important. Generation after generation the world's poor receive a lot of lip service but little if any substantive assistance. If anything, they are subjected to extremely repressive economic measures inflicted as a result of globalization, trade deals like NAFTA... Read ...

The No-Nonsense Guide to Globalization (No-Nonsense Guides)4 reviews
Wayne Ellwood

New Internationalist, 2006

Concise, entertaining guide to complex issues
This is a great intro to corporate globalism, and also a good refresher for the more educated folk. Ellwood wonderfully and consicesly gives a quick history of globalization (ie economic colonialism)describes the Bretton Woods Trio, explains and the problems with the rise of speculative investments, among others. I would recommend this book to anyone.

The No-Nonsense Guide to Sexual Diversity (No-Nonsense Guides)1 review
Vanessa Baird

New Internationalist, 2007

Great Overview of Sexual Diversity
I was suggested this book for a study abroad program on gender and sexuality. This book gives a quick overview of the history of sexual diversit. The great thing about this book is that it tries to cover as much of the world's cultures throughout history and takes into consideration different cultral views. If you are wanting to start understanding gender and diversity pick this book up!
