Deepak Chopra

Harmony, 2007

The Essential How to Know God
I had read How to Know God sometime ago, and decided to purchase The Essential How to Know God as a refresher. It was very uplifting. To me Deepak Chopra just seems so clear on matters of the spirit. I recommend this book.

Adopted into God's Family: Exploring a Pauline Metaphor (New Studies in Biblical Theology)5 reviews
Trevor J. Burke

IVP Academic, 2006

A crux of Pauline theology
Having recently experienced a "long day's journey into night" in my own spiritual life, I know firsthand what it means to have temporarily experienced the seeming loss of God's presence and care and then to have found it again. In this process, I rediscovered the reality of God's relationship with me. Trevor Burke's treatise on the subjective sense in which "sons" of God resonates with the ...

Growing into God2 reviews
Edwina Gateley

Sheed & Ward, 2000

A wonderful, profound collection of spirtual insight.
Unique, alive, pulsating and quiet. A wonderful, inspiring read. Highly Recommended. Edwina Gateley has the unique ability to hear, in her silence, the resonance of God. She hears the same way that Stradivarius, knew perfection when he heard it. In this book of poetry, she sings her ballad "Growing into God" in such a melodic way that you will nod, affirmatively, with her canter. By the end ...

Journey into God's Word: Your Guide to Understanding and Applying the Bible1 review
J. Scott Duvall, J. Daniel Hays

Zondervan, 2008

An excellent resource!
This condensation of the text book version "Grasping God's Word" is a fantastic resource for all Christians and students of scripture. The best chapter is probably "What Do We Bring to the Text?" as it explores our predispositions to read the Bible with our pre-understandings rather than applying good, universal interpretative principles to truly "grasp" the author's intent.

Exploration into God1 review
John A.T. Robinson

Stanford University Press, 1967

A Sequel to "Honest to God," a Better Book
Robinson is one of the great theologians of the later 20th century. He (along with Harvey Cox) worked in what has since become known as "Secular Theology." That is, a theology which explicitly says, "go look for the holy amidst the profane, you'll find it there." "Exploration into God" is, in essence, the answer to the question posed by "Honest to God." The earlier book is a good and ...

The Journey into God: Healing and Christian Faith1 review
Kenneth L. Bakken

Augsburg Fortress Publishers, 2000

Medical and spiritual insights united in healing
Kenneth Bakken, clergyman and physician, in his book The Journey in to God seeks to revive the numinous, the holy, amongst Christian believers. As a deeply believing Lutheran Christian pastor he somewhat surprisingly states that publishing the Bible in common tongues so that the multitudes could read was not all gain. "Without the Holy Spirit, the gospel remains an idea--a message with no ...

Into the Depths of God: Where Eyes See the Invisible, Ears Hear the Inaudible, and Minds Conceive the ...4 reviews
Calvin, Miller

Bethany House, 2001

Go Deep
Miller is an author who definitely has a way with words. He has stretched my vocabulary in exploring the depths of life in Christ. His words stick to me, making me want more of Him, and want to share that hunger with others. Many times, only a chapter or just a few pages would be all I could read at one time - not because of time restraints, but because I needed digestion time. Go deep... then go ...

Ewert Cousins

Paulist Press, 1978

The Vision of God in Jesus Christ
This book is a spiritual gold mine for all people seeking to see God in Jesus Christ as well as those from any and every background who seek the Truth. St Bonaventure (1217 - 1274) is a doctor of the Catholic Church, lover of Christ, mystic and near contemporary of his spiritual father, St Francis of Assisi. The book's first work, "The Soul's Journey into God", is an account of how to ...

Into God's Presence: Prayer in the New Testament (Mcmaster New Testament Series)1 review

Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, 2001

Table of Contents & Misc.
I went out on a limb and bought this not knowing much of what's in it. I'll actually review it when I'm done reading it, but here's the table of contents so you can make an informed purchase (btw, the picture on the cover is different - mine has _Christ in the Desert_ by Ivan Kramskoi. Beautiful picture.) So far the book is both practical and scholarly, which is wonderful. contributions preface ...

Falling into the Arms of God: Meditations With Teresa of Avila4 reviews
Megan Don

New World Library, 2005

A wonderful experience as well as a good read
In this simple yet deep book, Megan Don not only captures the essence of St. Teresa, but provides a portal for the reader to experience the mystic's pathway to God. Simple meditations amplify the text discussions, offering meaningful, visceral and lasting understanding of both Teresa and her devotion to God. Brava!

Making Life Work: Putting God's Wisdom into Action7 reviews
Bill Hybels, Lynne Hybels

InterVarsity Press, 1998

Great Book
This is a great book. I've read it several times and got something different out of it each time I read it. It's great for a small group, to go along with a study of Proverbs.

The Way into Encountering God in Judaism (Way Into...)1 review
Neil Gillman

Jewish Lights Publishing, 2004

Good analyses of both traditional and nontraditionl views
I have had the privilege of hearing Rabbi Gillman lecture. For years, he has been a distinguished faculty member at the Jewish Theological Seminary and his less traditional image of God is well known to those who have read his writings or heard his lectures. In this book, one of the views of God that he discusses is that of Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan. This image is that God is the Power which leads us ...

The Journey into God: A Forty-Day Retreat With Bonaventure, Francis and Clare2 reviews
Josef Raischl, Andre Cirino, ...

Saint Anthony Messenger Press, 2003

Map for the Journey of Bonaventure
Bonaventure's work the "Itinerarium" is the best introduction to Franciscan spirituality there is. Bonaventure composed it after he had been Minister General of the Little Brothers for two years. He was then nearly burned out from trying to keep the Order together. The "Itinerarium" is the fruit of a time of solitude on Mount La Verna. During this retreat, Bonaventure tried to enter the heart ...

God Is in the Small Stuff and It All Matters: Stop Worrying and Invite God into the Details of Your Life4 reviews
Bruce & Stan

Barbour Publishing, Incorporated, 2004

Great book!
This book did a really good job in describing why God truly is in the small stuff. These guys talk about various aspects of life, such as parenting, marriage, faith, the Word of God, managing money, being a listener, being an encourager, etc. I especially liked the "proverbs" at the end of each chapter, with the various words of wisdom pertaining to each topic. I really enjoyed this book.

Baptized into Gods Family (Stock #15n0543)3 reviews
Andrew Das

Northwestern Pub House, 1992

An Excellent Book on Infant Baptism from a Lutheran Perspective
"Baptized into God's Family" is the best book written on the Lutheran doctrine of infant baptism. A. Andrew Das does not write anything that is necessarily new or controversial. What makes this book wonderful is that it explains the historic Lutheran doctrine of infant baptism in a simple and clear manner without suffering a loss of theological substance. The Chapters of the book are as ...

Dancing Madly Backwards: A Journey Into God4 reviews
Paul Marechal

Crossroad Pub Co, 1982

A Transcendent Christian Poem
This is an extraordinary little book that is a true poem of a pure heart seeking to know God. It is written out of the contemplative Christian tradition, but is always moving beyond the necessary limits of this symbolism into the quiet, transcendent mystery that is prior to all religions. It is a spiritual gem.

Nelson's New Illustrated Bible Commentary: Spreading the Light of God's Word Into Your Life12 reviews

Thomas Nelson, 1999

Very helpful commentary based on the NKJV
I have several 1 volume Bible commentaries, and this one is one of the better ones. It is based on the New King James Version (NKJV) and it offers a concise yet helpful commentary on each of the books of the Bible. The editors are all conservative Bible scholars who hold to the complete inerrancy of Scripture. They interpret the prophetic books of Daniel and Revelation in a futurist and ...

Falling Into the Face of God: Forty Days and Nights in the Judean Desert1 review
William J. Elliott

Thomas Nelson, 2006

Another inspiring, lovely book from this talented writer
It's not the average Wisconsinite that would choose to spend forty days in the hottest of deserts, but William J. Elliott is not average. If you are lucky, you have discovered this writer's previous works in which he travels worldwide to interview the great spiritual leaders of our time. In both of his must reads, Tying Rocks to Clouds and A Place at the Table : A Journey to Redicover the Real ...

God's Middle Finger: Into the Lawless Heart of the Sierra Madre58 reviews
Richard Grant

Free Press, 2008

...And the horse you rode in on too!
How can you not love a travel book where the very Prologue has the author being hunted at night by drunken locals for sport? Perhaps if some of the other writers out there had the same motivation the quality of writing in general might improve...but I digress. RICHARD GRANT's Into the Lawless Heart of the Sierra Madre God's Middle Finger is enjoyable and excitable reading, the kind that has you ...
