Just Above My Head11 reviews
James Baldwin

Michael Joseph, 1979

An artist of words
Probably one of the more underappreciated novels in American literature. It is unfair to charecterize Baldwin as merely a social critic of the civil rights era. He stands alongside Dickens as one of the great writers of any era, with the ability to articualte an understanding of human nature that trancends any era and stands second to none.

All Things Wise and Wonderful16 reviews
James Herriot

Michael Joseph Ltd, 1978

Definitely a classic
The third book in the series and you know exactly what to expect. Yes, folks, it is every bit as entertaining as the first two, and that's probably all you need to know. But I'll go ahead and mention that he spends some time in the RAF during World War II, which we knew he would as the second book ended. I'll also mention that he and Helen have a baby, which you probably expected. One of the ...

Darwin16 reviews
Adrian J. Desmond, James R. Moore

Michael Joseph Ltd, 1991

ONE OF THE BETTER DARWIN BIOGRAPHIES
I just completed my second reading of this work. I do feel it is one of the better Darwin biographies. It certainly is not in the same league with Janet Browne's two volume work, but if you cannot get Browne, then this one will certainly do. This work is well researched and certainly presents us with a good look at not only Darwin the man, but of his science. I had to agree with another ...

James Herriot's Cat Stories20 reviews
James Herriot

Michael Joseph Ltd, 1994

One extraordinary read...
James Herriot writes of his veterinary experiences as no one else could. Full of humor, sometimes sadness but always spellbinding and interesting. I could not put this book down.

The Caterpillar That Roared: Awakening the Lion Within9 reviews
Joseph S Sturniolo, Daniel Christopherson

Morgan James Publishing, 2008

Inspirational
This book is amazing and gratifying! It opened my eyes to the real responsibilites and obligations we have to ourselves and to each other. The lessons are clear-cut. Believing in yourself, when others may not necessarily, and having the resolution and strength to follow through with your own convictions. It is also the understanding that the endeavor to collect material wealth and retiring in ...

The Price of the Ticket6 reviews
James Baldwin

Michael Joseph Ltd, 1985

Best American essayist
With the possible exception of Tom Paine and Gore Vidal, Baldwin is the finest essayist. Most of his non-fiction is here, including his groundbreaking essay "Fifth Avenue, Uptown," the best single essay I have ever read. Of special interest, as one who enjoys movie criticism, is the entire book "The Devil Finds Work," in which Baldwin happily takes apart a number of American classic films. I was ...

Color Code, The: A Revolutionary Eating Plan For Optimum Health10 reviews
James Joseph, Daniel Nadeau, ...

Hyperion, 2003

Most incredible and so informative!
This book is so simple to read and once you start you don't want to put it down. The first few pages make you want to run out to the grocery store and hit the produce isle. It honestly makes you change your entire way of thinking when it comes to eating. You'll want that fruit salad rather than the candy bar. It's just such' a GREAT and easy to read and so easy to absorb book! Everyone is getting ...

The Miracle of Mind Dynamics: A New Way to Triumphant Living15 reviews
Joseph Murphy, James F. Murphy

Simple Spiritual Truth
Joseph Murphy has written what has to be one of the most profound yet simple books on Spiritual principles and truth ever written. I was so blessed by this book. I would highly recommend to anyone seeking a real relationship with God. It really is not complicated and Joseph Murphy shows you how to achieve it.

Sea Assault6 reviews
Joseph Enright, USN, Captain Joseph F. Enright, ...

St. Martin's Paperbacks, 2000

War writing at its finest
Sea Assault is war writing at its finest. In this World War II tale we follow the American sub Archer-Fischer and her tentative skipper, Captain Joseph F. Enright, on her hunt and discovery of Japan's new secret weapon, a 72,000-ton aircraft carrier. What ensues is likened to a high stakes chess game scattered across the throes of the south Pacific. The book alternates point of view every other ...

My Dearest Friend: Letters of Abigail and John Adams12 reviews
Abigail Adams, John Adams

Belknap Press, 2007

My Dearest Friend~Letters from John Adams to his wife Abbigail
If you are a history buff or just a little interested in the history of our nation you will love this book. The letters exchanged between John and Abigail Adams are wonderful. Abigail was definitely John's rock. She kept him focused and steady. John was a very passionate man in his beliefs and at times would become a tyrant trying to convince people that his way of thnking was the only way to ...

Wings of Art: Joseph Campbell on James Joyce4 reviews

Highbridge Audio, 1995

On a par w/Moyers interviews
Only Campbell could make Joyce seem so accessible, and he was eminently qualified since he spent a good portion of his life studying Joyce. The first 5 minutes are a billiant summary and distillation of a writer who is broader and more universal in his scope than anyone since Shakespeare. The only slight downside is the occasional throat-clearing and other noises that are part of a live ...

James E. Fitzpatrick, Joseph G. Morelli

Mosby, 2006

Dr.Azeem Alam Khan.MBBS (QAU),M.Sc (UK),FACP (USA).
I bought this book a month ago, read it thoroughly and find it quite intersting and informative. It is different from the books usually written on dermatology. All questions asked are very common, informative and the one which are usually asked in the ward rounds and clinical meetings. The Winter People4 reviews
Joseph Bruchac

Dial, 2002

Highly Reccomend this book
I found this to be both an easy to read book, and historically accurate as well. Bruchac is an amazing writer, and teaches many lessons while the the story is told. This book should definately be read by middle school-high school students because it will help teach about both the native peoples and the Seven Years war, and help to wash away some of the stereotypes that have plagued native peoples ...

The Shadow of the Serpent: A Coyote Moon Story4 reviews
James Joseph

Audenreed Pr, 1997

A Grabber!
SHADOW OF THE SERPENT is a thrill-packed and emotionally-charged epic adventure which beckons those of us on the "war path" to follow a better Way. I had a sense of being irresistably drawn through misty woods into mysterious caverns, only to hear the whisperings of shamans sharing the wonders of ancient Truth: Go back and live in the Light. Henceforth, whenever I see patterns of yellow and ...

The Christmas Day Kitten4 reviews
James Herriot

Michael Joseph, London, 1986, 1986

Heartwarming Story
Not having been familiar with the work of James Herriot before this book, I was happily surprised when I read this to my little cat-loving daughter this christmas season. This is a touching story which brought us both to tears, but gave a joyful smile as we reached the end of the story. Truly a story to be shared with every child at christmas!

Blood-Dark Track: A Family History5 reviews
Joseph O'Neill

Granta Books, 2001

Fascinating Personal and Historical Account
"Blood Dark Track" provides a fascinating background into the history of both Ireland and Turkey during the first half of the Twentieth Century. These two very disparate regions actually have more in common than we would initially suppose: neutrality during WWII, an antipathy to British Imperialism, persecution of religious minorities, and layers upon layers of history underlying bloody ...

Eccentrics3 reviews
David Joseph Weeks, Jamie James

Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1995

What's the Difference Between a Screwball and an Eccentric?
I first learned about David Weeks and this book while I was looking at the shower curtain in my bathroom absentmindedly one day. My roommate had cut out various pictures from magazines and glued them to a clear plastic curtain and then glued a dark blue plastic curtain behind it to create a nice mosaic. Something nice to look at while showering. Well, behold, I was looking at it that day and I ...

Beard on Pasta5 reviews
James A Beard

M Joseph, 1984

In constant use in my kitchen
This is one of my cookbooks which never gets put away. I proposed over a serving of the Pesto, and now my kids demand the macaroni and cheese. Some of the dishes seem like crazy combinations, but have become pot luck favorites. The pastitisio and the basil lasagne were big hits. No clunkers here.

James Tissot4 reviews

Phaidon Press Ltd, 1984

James Tissot
The paintings of James Tissot both reveal and pose questions concerning his subjects. Many works have seemingly deliberate contradictions. I found myself engrossed in each scene. This particular book is a beautiful collection of his most recognizable pieces.

Thriving through Ministry Conflict: By Understanding Your Red and Blue Zones6 reviews
James P. Osterhaus, Joseph M. Jurkowski, ...

Zondervan, 2005

An indispensible tool for ministry leaders
As a pastor with 20 years experience in the church and a seminary professor in practical theology, I know of no other resource that is so immediately and practically accessible for coaching ministers through the toughest aspects of our calling. It captures succinctly and deftly so many of the issues surrounding pastoral conflict (and beyond conflict to change-leadership, too). I am having my ...
