Association For Japanese-Language Teaching (Ajalt)

Kodansha International, 2006

Want extra exercises? This is the one.
Do you own or plan to buy the "Japanese for Busy People I: Revised 3rd Edition" either in romanized or kana version? If you do, this is a pretty good choice if you want to do more exercises along with the lessons learned from the "Japanese for Busy People I". This workbook only provides more dialogue and listening exercises. Do not expect to see any grammar tips, culture notes, or even kana. If ...

Dirty Japanese: Everyday Slang from "What's Up?" to "F*ck Off!" (Dirty Everyday Slang)18 reviews
Matt Fargo

Ulysses Press, 2007

Very funny book with some minor flaws.
I found this book and I am a student learning Japanese. I found this book to be very humorous, especially in the order they put them in. I like the little side sections they put in such as the tan-tan-tanuki drinking song. I find this very enjoyable and I think many other people would find this book wonderful and humorous to read also unless you have no sense of humor.

Great for reviewing Japanese
I am returning to Japan for a visit and needed a review of conversational Japanese. This book worked well for that purpose.

Random House Japanese-English English-Japanese Dictionary55 reviews
Seigo Nakao

Random House Reference, 1997

My favorite Japanese / English Dictionary
This is by far my favorite dictionary for Japanese. And believe me, I went through several trying to find one I liked. The Romanji and Kanji definitions are exactly what I needed as a beginner and now, as an intermediate student, they still prove very useful. I use this everyday. I would also recommend The Kodansha Kanji Learner's Dictionary as a nice compliment to this dictionary. If ...

Kodansha's Furigana Japanese Dictionary: Japanese-English English-Japanese56 reviews
Kodansha International

Kodansha International, 1999

THE BEST JAPANESE LANGUAGE DICTIONARY FOR BEGINNERS
I worn out my first copy of this dictionary during my 15 months as a Japanese Language student in Tokyo because I even used it when I went shopping. And I just bought a second. This may be the best Japanese-English English-Japanese Dictionary for beginning to intermediate students of Japanese (including the popular and far more expensive denki jisho), and actually, because of it's functional ...

Basic Japanese: Learn to Speak and Understand Japanese with Pimsleur Language Programs (Simon & Schuster's)17 reviews
Pimsleur

Pimsleur, 2005

Great beginner book
I bought this for my 11-year-old who is obsessed with learning Japanese - and for that matter, becoming Japanese! He practices every day. The new lessons repeat items from previous lessons which helps to remember. My older son received a different book for Christmas from a friend studying linguistics. My son has listened to them both and said this book is better for the beginning student. I ...

Japanese Cooking: A Simple Art39 reviews
Shizuo Tsuji, Yoshiki Tsuji

Kodansha International, 2007

From Osaka With Love
This is the only Japanese cookbook you will ever need. As other reviewers have already mentioned, it is indeed "the Bible of Japanese cooking." A little bit about me, I first feel in love with Japanese cooking at the age of 8, when for my birthday, my parents took me to Joto's Japanese restaurant and I tried Sukiyaki. The sauce was to die for. The sauce won me over more than the ingredients ...

Japanese Step by Step : An Innovative Approach to Speaking and Reading Japanese43 reviews
Gene Nishi

McGraw-Hill, 2001

A great aid while learning japanese
This was the first book I bought when I decided to study japanese and I will never regret it. In fact, when I look through some other books on the same subject I almost think that I would never have continued studying if I had not bought this book. This book starts of with presenting the structure behind simple japanese sentences so that you can say "That building is high" or "I like apples" ...

Japanese for Dummies AUDIO+CD23 reviews
Eriko Sato

For Dummies, 2002

Not Only Did I Learn How To Speak Japanese...
but I also learned a lot about the Japanese Culture in this book. It starts off with the basics and steadily progresses to more chananging lessons. The only downside is that there are no writing lessons to help learn Katakana. I was a bit bummed about that, but what the book had in it really helped me learn the difficult Japanese language. Reccomended for beginners.

Japanese for Busy People II: Third Revised Edition incl. 1 CD (Japanese for Busy People)4 reviews
AJALT

Kodansha International, 2007

learn japanese
Well designed book, but don't think it's going to be easy to learn this language if you are a normal person. It's as good a way to study as you are likely to find, but you are going to need some other support from a native speaker.

The Complete Japanese Joinery7 reviews
Hideo Sato, Yasua Nakahara

Hartley and Marks Publishers, 2000

a very good source of happyness
When i bought it, i was looking for a manual to learn some basic about making japanese joinery in small amatorial woodworking projects. I'm not a carpenter, i'm just an hobbist. Every page of this book is a precious pearl of a deep knowledge, surrounded by Japanese philosophy as well. If you are patient to read very carefully and then practise, you'll find a pleasant surprise: a good job ...

Japanese Core Words and Phrases: Things You Can't Find in a Dictionary (Power Japanese Series) (Kodansha's ...6 reviews
Kakuko Shoji

Kodansha International, 2001

Wish I'd bought this sooner!
This book really is excellent in every way. I'm an intermediate/advanced japanese student, although I mainly study on my own these days. Because of that, I needed something to teach me some of the little things that are difficult to find in a book, yet are a big part of the language, and this book does that. It has a HUGE list of Japanese idioms, set phrases, and similar grammatical tools that ...

Making Sense of Japanese: What the Textbooks Don't Tell You (Power Japanese Series) (Kodansha's Children's ...19 reviews
Jay Rubin

Kodansha International, 2002

Greasing the transition from intermediate to advanced...
This book is lots of fun. Rubin is witty, his turns of phrase are memorable, and overall the book will certainly put a smile on your face. It's only useful once you've been studying Japanese for a couple of years, though. Before then, it'll go over your head. I mean, I can only wish for the day when figuring out the passive-causative is the biggest problem I have in Japanese. I bet ...

Langenscheidt's Pocket Dictionary Japanese/English English/Japanese23 reviews
Langenscheidt

Langenscheidt Publishers, 2001

Must have!
I bought this for my 11-year-old son who wants to learn Japanese on his own. He says it has many current words and phrases and is easy to reference. This has a chart of Kanji, Hiragana, and Katakana (Japanese symbols) that he can use while he learns to write. This dictionary tells you how to count and how to say numbers (such as first, second, etc.). I also purchased the Merriam-Webster's ...

Japanese, The Spoken Language: Part 1, A Question and Answer Supplement (Yale Language Series)59 reviews
Eleanor Harz Jorden, Mari Noda

Yale University Press, 1994

Good in class, bad for self study
There are a lot of good reviews here and a lot of bad ones, but mainly there are a lot that are far too long to be helpful. If you're discovering JSL for the first time, here is the real story: PEOPLE WHO SHOULD USE JSL: Linguists, smart people, adults, people in intensive language programs with good teachers PEOPLE WHO SHOULD AVOID JSL: 13 year-olds, stupid people, anyone doing ...

Japanese the Manga Way: An Illustrated Guide to Grammar and Structure22 reviews
Wayne P. Lammers

Stone Bridge Press, 2004

Sometimes, you just think "A-duh!"
After seeing this book, I had to do a double-take just because the concept seems so refreshingly brilliant that I had to wonder why nobody had thought of it before. Technically, other people had, but not quite in this manner, and certainly not to the detail this book goes in to. "Japanese the Manga Way" is very nearly a perfect book to learn to read useful, everyday Japanese. The manga panels ...
