Occupational Therapy Manual for the Evaluation of Range of Motion and Muscle Strength1 review
Donna Latella, Catherine Meriano

Delmar Cengage Learning, 2003

Good OT source
Nice source for ROM and MMT (both group and individual)for occupational therapists. I especially like the ASHT variation guidelines which were included. Many OT sources do not have complete or clear "group" muscle testings, this book did. It also had clear and "to the point" explanations of purpose of each testing procedure. Pictures of "gravity lessened" muscle testing procedures would be ...

Super Joints: Russian Longevity Secrets for Pain-Free Movement, Maximum Mobility & Flexible Strength36 reviews
Pavel Tsatsouline

Dragon Door Publications, 2001

worth the $$$
First of all, this is a guide to healthier JOINTS; not about stretching muscles. I didnt know that joints need 'range of motion' workouts to stay flexible, as muscles need to be stretched. Some of the moves need more detailed instruction; but the pictures are very good. If you're NOT into doing splits, ignore those exercises. It really does help free up your joints to do these exercises daily. ...

Measurement of Joint Motion: A Guide to Goniometry 3rd Edition5 reviews
Cynthia C. Norkin, D. Joyce White

F. A. Davis Company, 2003

Invaluable
I got an earlier edition of this book in Physical Therapy school and it was invaluable in teaching the finer points of goniometry. I constantly used it as a source of information, until I became comfortable with measuring joint range of motion. Since I am now working in the inpatient arena, I mostly repeatedly measure knees, but refer back to it when I need to brush up on another joint. It has ...

Musculoskeletal Assessment: Joint Range of Motion and Manual Muscle Strength1 review
Hazel M Clarkson

Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2000

Somebody PLEASE write a better manual muscle testing book!
I am an occupational therapy student currently taking Functional Anatomy. This is the assigned book for the course. It is EXTREMELY difficult to follow. It has ridiculously few pictures. There must be a better book out there for manual muscle testing. Our whole class (50 OTs and PTs) have complained about this book.

Science of Flexibility1 review
Michael J. Alter

Human Kinetics Publishers, 2004

Fantastic book for learning about how flexibility works...
Great book for learning about flexibility, mobility and how your muscles work. It might be technical for many people, but you can always skim over the more difficult parts. It goes into every imaginable aspect of flexibility and flexibility training - what we know, what we *don't* know (yet) methods from yoga to dynamic stretches, tons of references, comparison of ideas, apllication to sport - ...

Joint Range of Motion and Muscle Length Test1 review
Nancy Berryman Reese, William D. Bandy

Saunders, 2002

Clinical text
Great for the student of goniometery. Though the content and layout is very similar to some other texts on the subject the information is presented in a more "user friendly" manner in terms of terminology and instruction of technique. A great reference text when designing test protocols.

The Articulate Body1 review
Sidi Hessel, Sisi Hessell, ...

St Martins Pr, 1980

Great for posture, RSI, and spine/disk issues, and office workers
I found this book in my library, and it is a gem. Amazingly it is from the 70's and no one has updated it yet. The reality is it really isn't in need of updating, but is a work of perfection, and wonderful for rehabilitating and re-educating every joint in your body. The program starts out with "Articulations" in which you learn how to gently move all the joints of the body, increasing ...
