Kilimanjaro via the Marangu Route: "Tourist Route" My Ass3 reviews
Phil Gray

iUniverse, Inc., 2006

Can altitude sickness be funny?
I am planning a trip to Kenya, and my friends are pushing me to join them when they hike Mt Kili. I bought all the technical books and felt I still didn't understand if this was right for me. After reading this book I've developed a new respect for individuals who push their limits for the sake of personal desire, not to prove they are tough or adventurous. I also developed a new respect for ...

Northern Tanzania: The Bradt Safari Guide with Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar (Bradt Travel Guide)7 reviews
Philip Briggs

Bradt Travel Guides, 2006

A must read and take book for the Tanzania Safari-Goer
I recently returned from a Safari to Tanzania, mainly centered around animal and native peoples visiting. I found this book invaluable as a background read before the visit, and also during the visit. It is well written and covers the highlights in a very succint and informative manner. It is portable as well, and I referred to it many times during the two week trip. Afterwards I also used it ...

Dead Men Don't Leave Tips: Adventures X Africa19 reviews
Brandon Wilson

Pilgrim's Tales, Inc., 2005

A 10,000 Mile African Odyssey
"Wild, pristine beauty surrounded us as we drove to the base of remote Djomba to establish camp. Towering green peaks sprouted out of ripe clusters of lush vegetation. Massive pyramidal volcanoes rose of the verdant floor suggesting its prehistoric past. Churning, whitecapped rivers cascaded over mountainsides into translucent pools below, and its beauty didn't end with nature." ~ pg. 146 ...

The Shadow of Kilimanjaro19 reviews

Holt Paperbacks, 1999

Not at all patronizing
Rick Ridgeway has written a very informative and entertaining account of his 300 mile hike West to East across southern Kenya in 1997. The walk was metaphorically in THE SHADOW OF KILIMANJARO beginning on the summit of that great mountain and spanning the different ecological zones of mountain moraine, foothills, savannah, scrub, desert, and finally tropical white sand beaches of the Indian Ocean ...

Kilimanjaro: The Trekking Guide to Africa's Highest Mountain - 2nd Edition; Now includes Mount Meru13 reviews
Henry Stedman

Trailblazer Publications, 2006

Kilimanjaro Climbing Resources
I purchased the Second Edition (September 2006) of "Kilimanjaro: The Trekking Guide to Africa's Highest Mountain" in July 2007. Within a week (as I was sitting on airplanes far too often and had time to read), I had read the 300+ page book cover to cover. The book is excellent, informative, and often humorous. The trail descriptions are detailed and precise, and the other guidance (medical, ...

The Snows of Kilimanjaro and Other Stories18 reviews
Ernest Hemingway

Scribner, 1995

Papa's Life Shines through his Work
If, ever, you have wanted to travel along with Papa (Hemingway) along his many travels and adventures, this collection of stories is the ideal way to rest your soles in his footsteps. "Kilimanjaro" in particular, transports you to a bygone era of safaris not with telephoto lenses, but with long rifle barrels. Primarily, though, it is an introspective look at one's life and the worth that one ...

Under Kilimanjaro6 reviews
Ernest Hemingway, Robert E. Fleming

Kent State University Press, 2005

An important, definitive polishing of Hemingway's final creation
Under Kilimanjaro was Hemingway's last book and was an autobiographical novel about the country he knew and grew to love when he spent several months in Kenya between 1953 and 1954 - but it was completed in 1956 and is the last of his manuscripts to be published in its entirety. No definitive Hemingway collection could be without Under Kilimanjaro: co-editors Robert Lewis and Robert Fleming have ...

Kilimanjaro: A Compete Trekker's Guide (Cicerone Mountain Walking)1 review
Alexander Stewart

Cicerone Press, 2004

what's it like to climb Kili?
I was very apprehensive about climbing Kilimanjaro, even though i always wanted to, until i read Mr. Stewart's book. The book put me at ease, with its comprehensive description of the routes, the dangers, and the joys. Though nothing compares to the real experience, 'Kilimanjaro, A Complete Trekker's Guide' will give the reader a thorough discussion of all aspects of the climb, from ...

In the Dust of Kilimanjaro (A Shearwater Book)
David Western

Island Press, 2001

"Kilimanjaro slowly takes shape as the night sounds die, its glaciated peak tinged pink in the early light. A solitary wildebeest stares motionless as if mesmerized by the towering mass; a small caravan of giraffe drifts across the plain in solitary file, necks undulating to the slow rhythm of their gangling stride. There is an inexplicable dÈjý vu about the African savannas, as if some subliminal memory is tweaked by the birthplace of our ...

Kilimanjaro: To the Roof of Africa (Hardcover)7 reviews
Audrey Salkeld

National Geographic, 2002

This book has something for everyone
Entertaining and informative book. The authors command over the language is impressive. I am visiting Kilimanjaro soon and I found the book gives a good insight into what the trip will be like. The book is full of historic information, both natural and human. Vivid photos, as expected of a National Geographic book, though I would prefer less glossy and minute details - if too much of a natural ...

Kilimanjaro Map by ITMB1 review
International Travel Maps and Books

International Travel Maps and Books, 2006

Kilimanjaro Map by ITMB
This was my second purchase of this map and I had hoped the ITMB would have updated it. The route details are still poor and in some case incorrect. Unfortunately as this is the only recent map of this area climbers have little choice. Recommendations: place history details on the back, expand map area coverage to include all entry gates; place an expanded coverage of the Kibo peak on the back ...

The Snows of Kilimanjaro and Other Stories (The Scribner Library)1 review

Charles Scribner's Sons, 1961

Yes, even Hemingway had flaws
Ernest Hemingway, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954, left behind an extensive canon of short stories that are varying in quality. This variation is no better realized than in 'The Snows of Kilimanjaro and Other Stories,' a collection of ten shorts written during the 1920s and 30s that are amongst Hemingway's most popular. The best-known is its title story 'The Snows of ...

For whom the bell tolls: [and], The snows of Kilimanjaro ; [and], Fiesta ; [and], The short happy life of ...2 reviews
Ernest Hemingway

Heinemann : Secker and Warburg : Octopus Books, 1977

wonderful, one of the best books I have ever read.
I loved the book and the movie. It just reminded me of Key West, which I love, and it gave me a comforting and happy feeling all the way through. It is incredible the way the old man never gives up with his courage to fight the big fish. The ending was perfect when he finds security in his hut and with the little boy. He sure deserved it.
