The Archangel and the OXCART: The Lockheed A-12 Blackbirds and the Dawn of Mach III Reconnaissance
Jeannette Remak
,
Joesph Ventolo
Trafford Publishing
, 2008
The A-12 Blackbird has long been the source of speculation. Born in secrecy, it represented a massive technological leap at a time when the Cold War was at its most dangerous point. When first flown in April 1962, the A-12 was 20 years ahead of any other jet aircraft. Capable of flight at speeds well over 2,000 mph and altitudes above 90,000 feet, it was an astonishing airplane. Build by ...

Great reference on the -104
This book is a great overview of the F-104s history. The author's work at Lockheed put him in a great position to locate several unusual photographs and drawings of the F-104s development. It also gave him access to many personnel at Lockheed who were involved in flight test and other design aspects, whose anecdotes spice up the book. The descriptions of systems are on the short side, but well ...

Great Overview
If you want the ultimate (but slightly out of date) book on the Skunk Works, look at the Jay Miller work. However, if you want a good overview that is fairly current, then this is the book for you. It includes data on the UAVs and X-33 that Skunk Works was developing prior to their cancellation. Lots of great photos, mostly in color.

The Human Side of Kelly Johnson
The prior reviewers are right, the book is short on details of the of that flood of technical innovation ( beyond the leading edge of what was thought possible ) that characterized Kelly's work. One only has to walk through the Smithsonian to understand his impact. Not just the advanced design of the SR-71, now older than most of the visitors, but the hushed awe its black hulk imposes of ...

C-141 -- Greatest Airlifter EVER!
This book is full of information any C-141 nut will really appreciate. I was a C-141 pilot when I was in the AF and recognize a number of the names Mr. Johnsen mentions in the book. Though the book is a bit tilted towards the 62nd MAW and McChord experience (where I flew) it does not distract from the story of the C-141! That's the real story of this book and it is a great one. Sadly, ...
Lockheed SR-71 Operations in the Far East (Combat Aircraft)
Paul Crickmore
Osprey Publishing
, 2008
Even before the first operational flight of the legendary Lockheed U-2 spy plane, aircraft design genius Kelly Johnson began work with his team at the company's "Skunk Works" plant on the type's replacement. The result was the SR-71. First deployed on March 9, 1968, this tri-sonic 'hotrod' flew its first operational sortie over North Vietnam just 12 days later. On that debut mission, the Blackbird overflew surface-to-air missile sites with ...

Excellent Blackbird family history. Unique information!
Before you say "Oh no, not ANOTHER book on the SR-71" take a look at what Dennis Jenkins has done. He broaches subjects that I've never seen written on the whole Blackbird heritage. Jenkins is careful to cover the A-12, YF-12, M-12, D-21 and SR-71 all in equal detail. Jenkins organizes his book in chronological order as to the development of the various subject aircraft. The first chapter is ...

Great Book, Deep into Details of this new Fighter
We know how to build a stealth fighter. We know how to build a long-range agile fighter. We may even have a good way of building a fighter that can land and take off vertically. But trying to build a fighter that can do all three is very, very difficult." But that's exactly what Lockheed Martin is building in the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. Perhaps trying to build is a better term. It looked ...

Work began in the early 1980s, and competition selection resulted in orders for flying demonstration prototypes of the YF-22 and the Northrop YF-23. The C-5 Galaxy was designed in the mid-1960s to transport vast quantities of material to any part of the globe. The result was the largest aircraft in the world. However, it became a symbol for government excess and production was limited to just 81 machines. Initial operations struggled with frequent breakdowns AND, in an extraordinary move, the gravely under-designed wing was replaced. Even more remarkable was the decision to reopen production ...
