One fans of the genre shouldn't miss
Nathan Kellerman's novel Compulsion is the epitomizes the word duality - it isn't Kellerman's best Alex Delaware novel, but by no means the worst. But after you've written a fair share of excellent detective novels it's only natural that a few sink to the middle. Regardless, Compulsion still exhibits the usual characteristics that all Kellerman's novel have: A strong plot, excellent character ...

Robert Crais has created another mystery novel that fans of reading won't want to miss. Chasing Darkness once again brings forth Elvis Cole to solve a mystery that could only come from the mind of Crais. It seems a few years back Elvis Cole made a career mistake: a serial killer was exonerated of murder charges that he may have been guilty of. Now with the discovery of a body, this man may have ...

A great addition to the "Harry Bosch" series!
I became a fan of the "Harry Bosch" novels by Michael Connelly late in life. I think it was the movie, Blood Work, starring Clint Eastwood and based on one of Connelly's other books, that caused me to buy The Narrows when it came out in paperback. I read that and found myself immediately hooked on the Bosch character. I've since gone back and purchased the other novels in the series (thirteen ...

The Only Baby Care Book You Need
This book was recommended by our pediatrician and also by our hospital. It truly is the only baby care book you need. Great format, clean, simple reading that is easy to digest...especially important in those first few weeks as a new parent. It will be the only childcare book still sitting on my bookshelf when we're ready for baby #2.

i disagree with a lot of these recommendations
I read this large read in only a few days and thought that it was beautifully written. The characters were precise, unique and captivating even characters who only made it in for a few sentences. I am a fan of James Freys style of writing and he really brings it home with this one.

Ahead of its time
This was a return engagement to "Cadillac Desert", as I had read the original in the 1980s, amazed at the time, considering it a premier example of thorough history and analysis in a subject about which few people knew much at all. What could have been a "dry" subject was actually quite gripping and informative, and fortunate to have many participants in key moments still available. In that ...

What the movie won't do
"The book was better." Moviegoers are always saying that. Back in 2005, *Los Angeles Times* columnist Steve Lopez wrote a series of stories about a homeless man who turned out to possess orchestra-level talent on several stringed instruments. Lopez turned his columns into *The Soloist* -- and now it's being turned into a movie (an early Oscar contender, no less, to be released Nov. 21) ...

Another beautiful story written by one of our best rising stars.
After reading Love Walked In I couldn't wait to refresh my love with the written words of De los Santos once more. Her character creation is on par with some of the greats in the industry and I must admit that the reappearance of Clare was a surprise (albeit a pleasant one) The book in most forms is a further extension of Teo and his wife Cornelia who left the bright lights of New York and moved ...

A refreshing witty private investigator and a great start to a series!
I had heard of Robert Crais for years but never read any of his work. Finally I decided to take the plunge and started with the first in the series "The Monkey's Raincoat". After blazing through the book I began wondering to myself, why in the heck have I joined the Elvis Cole band wagon so late. The book was really good, and I absolutely love the characters Elvis Cole and Joe Pike. ...

I had the extreme pleasure of sitting in two classes with Ms. Smith as she talked about Twilight. It is a wonderful work with a documentary foundation that educates you on the happenings during the infamous Los Angeles riots, from Korean shopkeepers to Black gang members to White-male politicians--Smith has made sure every reader gets the full spectrum of views. Each monologue is actually an ...

"Tough Like Some Guys Think They Are Tough"
Before Jim Thompson's nihilistic, tough guy crime fiction, and long before smart-talking private detectives like Robert Crais' Elvis Cole or Dennis Lehane's Patrick Kenzie, there was Raymond Chandler and his prototype hard boiled PI, Phillip Marlowe. While Hammett's Sam Spade pre-dates Marlowe's 1939 debut here in "The Big Sleep", Chandler - through Marlowe - is arguably the standard by which ...

Almost too realistic, yet a must read.
I heard this book was good, but didn't know how good it actually was until I read it. There isn't a dull page. What's most alarming about the book is not necessarily the events that take place, as many movies about this lifestyle have been made since the book's first publishing, sort of numbing the harsh realities of gang life to even outsiders who grew up in secluded suburbs, but the age ...

Non-stop reading
Marisa de los Santos' writes in a scattered manner so easy to follow. Although she made the main character thin, pretty, and smart- she was just weird enough to be likeable. Clair's point of view is thrilling. The ending was a little 'sicky-sweet'... but the writing made up for it. I am looking forward to the next!
