Lowly Origin: Where, When, and Why Our Ancestors First Stood Up2 reviews
Jonathan Kingdon

Princeton University Press, 2004

Neotenous niche thieves rule!
The next time you're tending your garden, pause a moment. Consider your position and local environment. Squatting down or on your knees, reaching around to weed or till, you are likely repeating a similar pose held by your ancient ancestors. According to Jonathan Kingdon, our African forebears started along their evolutionary path rooting about on the woodland floor seeking dinner. When ...

Uncle Tom's cabin: Or, Life among the lowly (A Doubleday Dolphin master)23 reviews
Harriet Beecher Stowe

DoubleDay, 1960

The unreadable classic- or Greatness of Influence vs. Literary quality
When Abraham Lincoln met Harriet Beecher Stowe he reportedly said, "This is the little woman who made the great war". The tremendous influence of this book on Anti-Slavery attitudes are considered to be a very real factor in leading to atmosphere which helped bring about the Civil War. This work is thus in terms of its 'real effect' in the 'real world ' far more important than 'Moby Dick' or " ...

Lyrics of Lowly Life2 reviews
Paul L. Dunbar

Books for Libraries, 1981

A compelling volume from an important American poet
"Lyrics of Lowly Life," by Paul Laurence Dunbar, was first published in 1896. It was a milestone in the too-short life of Dunbar (1872-1906), a pioneering figure in African-American literature. In his introduction to "Lyrics," William Dean Howells notes that Dunbar portrays African-Americans "with humor, with sympathy, and yet with what the reader must instinctively feel to be entire ...

Uncle Tom's Cabin: Or, Life Among the Lowly (Everyman Paperbacks)145 reviews
Harriet Beecher Stowe

Dutton Adult, 1972

A towering, very important American classic
For whatever reasons, I'm one of those who, over the years, never gave "Uncle Tom's Cabin" much thought. I'm afraid I dismissed the book based on the derogatory cliche of describing a complacent black man as an Uncle Tom. What a pleasure to find how wrong I was. Although the style of narration, the punctuation style of the day and the evolution of contractions, compound words and other bits of ...

Loving a Lowly Stranger3 reviews
Christina Cordaire

Thorndike Press, 1998

Step back in time and fall in love.
Loving a Lowly Stranger makes you care about the characters, makes you want to celebrate their triumphs and shout warnings when they are about to make a mistake. I cried when the hero comforted the little orphan and trembled when the heroine was trapped in the mine. A great read!

LOWLY WORM WORD BK&DOLL (Book & Doll)3 reviews
Richard Scarry

Random House Books for Young Readers, 1985

Excellent book for toddlers!
Chunky books are great for little hands, and all children love Richard Scarry books. I first heard about them when my cousins were little, and started buying them when our first child was born. She liked them, as did our second, third, and fourth child. Our youngest is 15 months old, and Richard Scarry's Lowly Worm Book is one of his favorites. He loves to turn the pages, look at the ...

Richard Scarry's Lowly Worm Storybook1 review
Richard Scarry

Random House Books for Young Readers, 1989

Great book for little readers
Another great Richard Scarry book. This is a collection of several stories all featuring Lowly Worm and his friends. My favorite story is the Talking bread. Little Flossie visits her dad at the bakery and loses her doll. She doesn't notice that it's missing until she bites into a fresh loaf of bread! My son likes Mr. Fixit and Absent-Minded Mr. Rabbit. Richard Scarry books always have so ...

Mean and Lowly Things: Snakes, Science, and Survival in the Congo9 reviews
Kate Jackson

Harvard University Press, 2008

A fascinating read for anyone
I'm no herpetologist but I couldn't put this book down! The author has a real knack for weaving together the details of how to do science with the excitement of real discoveries. She brings alive the magic of science, travel, survival, interacting with other cultures, and curiosity for how the world works. A great read!

Balloons And Other Fun Things Lowly Worms How Where Why Book#3 (Lowly Worm's How, Where and Why)1 review

Simon Spotlight, 1998

my 2-year-old knows about gravity!
My little girl received this book as a present, and she really enjoys it. She remembers the text and talks about gravity and helium. The level of detail and the proportion of words to pictures are good for this age group. I haven't been pleased with all of the "estate of Richard Scarry" products, but we will be getting more books from this series.

Harriet Beecher Stowe : Three Novels : Uncle Tom's Cabin Or, Life Among the Lowly; The Minister's Wooing; ...3 reviews
Harriet Beecher Stowe

Library of America, 1982

A great interpretation of a Christian man in shackles.
Uncle Tom's Cabin, written by a woman who appalled slavery, has touched the hearts of many readers. Wanting to change and affect public opinion on the concept of slavery, Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote a novel, a dramatic, engaging narrative that claimed the heart, soul, and politics of many fellow Americans. It was propaganda and an attempt to make whites in the North and South see slaves as ...

RICHARD SCARRYS READY TO READ BOOKS LOWLY WORM JOINS THE CIRCUS (The Busy World of Richard Scarry)2 reviews
Richard Scarry

Simon Spotlight, 1998

EXCELLENT! The best children's book ever!
Grrreat book! We thoroughly enjoyed it. Richard Scarry books are childhood companions that will undoubtedly remain favorites for many generations. It's great how Lowly learns where he truly belongs.

The Adventures of Lowly Worm2 reviews
Richard Scarry

Random House Books for Young Readers, 1995

Great for the youngest book "reader"
Our daughter is just two, and fascinated by everything Lowly Worm does. This book is the strongest incentive we've had for months--she absolutely loves it. I've seen the other reviews--apparently the writers are judging it by a standard for children who understand plot, character development, and linear storytelling. My 2-year old does not.
