"Lyrical Ballads" by William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge is a unique work of literature. first published in 1798, it marked a radical change in the direction of English Literature. "Lyrical Ballads" represented a movement away from the overwrought, highly formal and learned verse of the 18th century and in so doing ushered in a new, more democratic poetic era. Written in the language of the common man and addressing the concerns of ...

A seminal work in English literature
This collaboration between Wordsworth and Coleridge signaled the beginning of Romanticism in English poetry and announced all the important themes and techniques of the movement: the healing power of nature and art, the importance of "ordinary" man and woman, the pervasiveness of the supernatural in everday life, etc. The book also broke old rules by incorporating prosaic, common language in ...

"... must have come on like punk rock to a public groaning under the weight of over-cooked Augustanisms." The Guardian "The majority of the following poems are to be considered as experiments. They were written chiefly with a view to ascertain how far the language of conversation in the middle and lower classes of society is adapted to the purposes of poetic pleasure." --William Wordsworth, from the Advertisement prefacing the original 1798 ...

Excellent edition of a great set of poems
Richey and Robinson have compiled an excellent edition of Wordsworth and Coleridge's seminal Romantic text. In addition to the complete poems from the first edition of Lyrical Ballads published, they also provide intriguing commentary and copious contextual material that really gives you an excellent idea of just how influential this book was when it was first published. Highly recommended for ...

A clear reflection of the authors` story relationship
If you know of Wordsworth and Coleridge you might also know that they both, but Coleridge in particular, led quite stormy lives. Although this work is a representative of the not so stormy Romantic period, the poems seem to transgress from the ordinary quiet of that time in history. With "Rhyme of the ancient mariner" as the obvious headstone in the book one cannot help but feel that this is ...

A lyric poet in disguise
"There is no love of life without despair of life."-These words haunted me when I first read this book nearly ten years ago. I then lent it out, never to be returned. (Ahem, I've become very cautious about lending books out since then.) Anyway, I just recently repurchased this book and reread it, and I still (unlike Camus' himself) regard the LYRICAL essays herein as much more beautiful, ...

Great master of landscape
Superb book - as a guide and as a reference. Isaak Levitan was a real master of Silver Age of Russian painting - apart from excellent skills, he was able to capture the mood. Highly recommended

Breezy, Humorous, & Fun to Read
I discovered this book from a review in the Orlando Sentinel. They describe it this way, "a Chicago-area teen grapples with boyfriend issues, trigonometry and her search for the identity of her long-lost dad." It's written in the style of Chick Lit, meaning it is light, upbeat, modern fiction from the woman's viewpoint.

I am a huge Jeff Gordon fan so this book was right up my alley. Maria Bennett takes all the race recaps but from a Jeff Gordon's view point since she is a fan herself.
