`Do the ends justify the means?'
A young colleague of mine recently said `management is easy'. I smiled enigmatically and considered buying him a copy of `The Prince' but I fear it would be wasted. I am now on my third copy of this book which, alas, I can only read in English. The George Bull translation (as reprinted in 1995) is the version I currently refer to. I first read this book when studying economic history at high ...

Excellent
I think this is my favorite Jane Austen book so far, although I still have Persuasion and Northanger Abbey to read. Most Austen fans would not count Mansfield Park as a favorite, though, at least from what I've heard. It's not that it's a profoundly different book from the more popular Pride & Prejudice or Sense & Sensibility, but many people seem to dislike the main character, or at least are ...

the best children's book EVER !!!
How The Grinch Stole Christmas is a classic tale about greed, materialism, and the kindness of man for his fellow man all wrapped up in one great big package! The illustrations are wonderful and the rhyming text impresses me. This is a story by Dr. Seuss that is so popular it was made into a Christmastime TV special; and it deserves every bit of recognition that it gets. (Note: this story is ...

Pretty good book
This was one of the best economics books that I have read. The book is well-written with clear definitions and examples. The subject matter is already difficult to understand, but the author put it in a format that is easy to understand. The applications/problems are challenging but because the book is written the way that is, it is easier to grasp the issues in the book.

People read way too much into children's books!!!
I have always loved this book and unlike most adults, I take it for what it is . . . a children's book! It's purpose is not to promote mediocrity but to show that happiness can come from treating others with kindness and not being prideful. This kind of story is no different than the fables and stories that our parents used to tell us. Apparently there are some parents these days who just ...

An important book for our times
The Democratic National Convention started today in Denver, Colorado, and it is no doubt that the nominee of the party for President will be Senator Barack Obama. With that nomination, and even before, come the questions of who is this man, what does he believe in, and where does he stand? As our nation has struggled through the recent hardships of 9-1-1, the Iraq war, and turmoils in our local ...

Oh happy day! Bebris' best yet!
Wow, wow, wow! This is Carrie Bebris' best yet! Truly. Her writing and stories just get better and better; top shelf mystery that had me turning pages into the wee hours of the morning. I felt torn between speed reading to find out whodunnit, but wanted to prolong my delight and suspense in this delicious read. To avoid giving anything away (because that would be a failing indeed on my ...

A new age economics book
This book is leaps and bounds more impressive than most managerial economics books. The newest concepts in economics like auctions, moral hazard, sophisticated pricing and adverse selection are given full chapter treatments. Not only do the authors clearly explain these concepts, but they show how they are applied in the business world. I was also impressed with their revised game theory ...

The first American Political Intellectual
In the field of historical writing there is this great chasm. There are the intellectual Professional University Scholars who delve into the abyss of historical matter and come up with the historical truth. Unfortunately their writings are boring and state the rather moribund cold facts. On the other hand we have great writers who also do their due diligence but are able to write a coherent ...

A Personal Favourite
If all the Austen books were sisters, Mansfield Park would be the quiet, pensively courageous sibling of the six. Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Sense and Sensibility, and Persuasion all seem to glow like ladies at a ball. (Northanger Abbey would, I guess, be the sister who plays piano and can't really sing...although she tries...) I felt this novel to have a wonderfully theatrical feel, a closet ...

Not about imperialism or slavery
Since Edward Said wrote his foolish piece on Mansfield Park it has become de rigeur to attach agendas that reflect the intramural (ie bogus) leftism of the academy to novels (sorry texts) Even so this effort to do so in Mansfield Park is particularly outlandish. In fact the question "What is Mansfield Park about" is less interesting than the question "what is it like to read Mansfield Park" To ...

Not Austen's best, but still wonderful
After having read (and loved) Jane Austen's more famous novels EMMA and PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, I found MANSFIELD PARK a true delight. Fanny Price is taken in by her wealthy aunt and uncle as charity to her more lowly-married mother, and is raised with her cousins with the idea she needs refinement and education to become as good a woman as her lesser social standing will allow. Fanny is nervous and ...

Excellent source for getting the most out of Second Life
This book offers sound advice on almost all aspects of Second Life from social interaction to scripting, building, and texturing. It goes into fine detail on the workings of the user interface with great time saving tips and tricks for all levels of experience. It's by no means a dry technical read. The author does a good job of tying all of the topics together through examples of practical ...

I am new to the whole web site building, so this book was for me. It gave me a basic understanding of web publishing, free tools available to create my web pages and how to add links, blogs and graphics to my web site. This book has undergone a major revision since the 4th edition. The authors have done a good job of explaining basic economic principles and then applying them to the business world. New chapters on auctions and incentive schemes are both informative and timely. This is a must reading for those who think economic principles are just for the classroom. Not only do the authors show how the ...

I like Historical Diaries But This One Is Especially Meaningful
It's often said in tones of this-is-true-but-it's-also-heresy that Rose Wilder Lane, daughter of Laura and Almanzo Wilder, is the real unsung heroine in the Little House books, because while she let her mother have credit for the famous series, it was Rose, via her careful, invisible editing and re-writes, that turned cheery memoirs into beloved classics. I suspect that's true, but in the case of ...

The Incredible Jane Austen
Whoever is acquainted with Jane Austen's novels probably understands that her place in literature is almost unique for the period in which she wrote. She traveled her own road, and in the process published some of the most entertaining stories of any era. Don't bother to look hard for a hidden theme or complex plot. I've never been able to uncover any such thing. But for sheer artistry in ...
