In this first major English-language interpretation of charrería, Kathleen Mullen Sands describes the evolution of this equestrian tradition, highlighting the role of horsemen and women throughout Mexico's history. For those who believe cowboy culture and rodeo represent historic horsemanship in the United States, Charrería Mexicana reveals a festival of equal complexity and distinction.

meXicana Encounters: The Making of Social Identities on the Borderlands (American Crossroads, 12)1 review
Rosa Linda Fregoso

University of California Press, 2003

A vital contribution to studies of the border, gender and the mass media
The reader accompanies Fregoso on a passionate stream of close analysis and brilliant social critique. She reviews the ways that movies, fiction, and other cultural products continue to mark the lives of women on the border with oppresive myths of national and personal identity. Her cultural criticism covers, but is not limited to, mainstream movie portrayals of Chicana swomen, Mexican and ...

Mesa Mexicana7 reviews
Mary S. Milliken

William Morrow Cookbooks, 1994

Excellent for the hobbyist chef, but not everyday
Mary Sue Miliken and Susan Feniger are two of the top chefs in LA. Their "Border Grill" in Santa Monica (4th and Broadway) is a noisy, splashy, foodie haven with superb drinks, a decent wine/beer list, and amazing food. Mesa Mexicana offers recipes that one might easily see on Border Grill's menu. For those of us who grew up equating Mexican food with Tex-Mex, Miliken and Feniger's inventive take ...

Leyendas Mexicanas (Spanish Edition)1 review
Genevieve Barlow, William N. Stivers

National Textbook Company, 1996

Leyendas Mexícanas
"Leyendas Mexícanas" is a collection of eighteen Mexican legends. Each story is a delight to read. The legends reflect events from approximately 1,500 years of the country's history and folklore of Mexico. The tales introduce an array of memorable characters (from animals, gods, goddesses, ancient rulers and warriors) of the Mexican Republic. They are truly authenthic legends. One of my favorite ...

Cocina tradicional mexicana2 reviews
Blanca Nieto

Selector S.A. de C.U., 1998

The Real Enchilada.
If you want original Mexican cuisine, thisi is it! Only rivaled by "Recetas de Todo México"by Angeles de la Rosa, this book has all original recipes from all over the country. And by original I mean OLD recipes passed on by Grandmothers. The recipes are very good, might be hard to find the ingredients in the US, but they are worth looking for.

Cocina de la familia: más de 200 recetas auténticas desde cocinas mexicanas3 reviews
Marilyn Tausend, Miguel Ravago

Fireside, 1999

Welcome to the REAL Mexican Flavor!!
As a Mexican living in Upstate NY, far away from the mexican border where products are easily found, I consider myself lucky to keep my mexican cooking the best I can with what I find at hand. Half of the recipes in this book are part of my family heritage and half of them I didn't know how to prepare because they are from all over Mexico (I'm from Mexico City) and I bought this book with great ...

Cocina Mexicana Baja en Carbohidratos / Mexican Food Low in Carbohydrates (Spanish Edition)1 review
Equipo Editorial Logos

Diana, 2005

Tiny Little Book
Not only did it arrive damaged, so I returned it, but the book is about the size of a small magazine. There couldn't have been many recipes in it at all. It was sealed in plastic, so I didn't look inside, but for the price of this book, it should have been much, much bigger. I estimate that perhaps there are 100 recipes or less.

Mexicana (Icons)3 reviews
Jim Heimann

Taschen, 2002

South of the border, in color.
This all-color paperback shows a fascinating glimpse of Mexico using everyday printed ephemera. Considering the huge nation to the north of the country I found it intriguing that this material has its own distinctive national look and owes nothing to the graphic styles of the US. Apart from the three pages of introduction (in English, German and French) at the start of the book there is no ...

Casa Mexicana7 reviews
Tim Street-Porter

Stewart, Tabori and Chang, 1989

It is a great book!!
I am a Mexican woman studying in the USA. I read a commentary above saying that these are European houses, they are not. We were conquered by the Spaniards centuries ago and thus the architectural style blended creating a "Mexican Style". This so called Mexican style includes european traces with Indian influences. This book represents Mexican houses that complies with this style. Obviously you ...
