The Places In Between153 reviews
Rory Stewart

Harvest Books, 2006

Outstanding Must Read book
This is an extraordinary book. How many people do you know who would set off alone on foot across Afghanistan just after 9/11 armed with a stick? I had just read Three Cups of Tea so it was not unlikely for me to gravitate to this book, after seeing Rory on a CNN interview. What I did not expect was the sheer grit of the book and the man. This is not a comfortable book to read. It's a highly ...

The Hobbit1623 reviews

The Hobbit
I liked it better in English than in German, which isn't astonishing as the original is in English. I like Bilbo and his being an anti-hero and I felt with the elbs when they shot down the dragon who in the end got, what all greedy, power hungry people deserve.

The Middle Place (Voice)77 reviews
Kelly Corrigan

Voice, 2008

a careful dance between lightheartedness and gravity
Kelly Corrigan does an amazing job at recounting her experience of dealing with cancer with 2 very young children. During this traumatic experience, she learns her father who is her idol is diagnosed with cancer as well. The most remarkable aspect of this novel is how light-hearted Corrigan manages to keep her tale while alternating between stories of growing up as a Corrigan between her ...

The Children of Húrin262 reviews
J.R.R. Tolkien

Houghton Mifflin, 2007

Excellent Story
The story was tough to get into; however, once I was into it, it was impossible to put down. The language style is a little tough to get used to, but once the story starts moving along you don't even notice it. This is another great book about elves and men. If you enjoyed the Silmarilion you will like this book.

For now...
For now I just can say that it is a primorous job. And it must be said that it is a complete work of perfection, an item of beauty. Henceforth I have to begin my reading.

The Lord of the Rings: 50th Anniversary, One Vol. Edition35 reviews
J.R.R. Tolkien

Houghton Mifflin, 2005

A Classic in Every Way
Full disclosure: I'm a fan that was brought in by the movies. Normally, I try to read a book before seeing it in movie form, but I was actually convinced not to in this case (more on that in a moment). Eventually, though, I watched the Peter Jackson film adaptations, loved them, and decided I'd like to get the full story. As a first-time LOTR reader, this edition looked like the best choice, as ...

Cybele's Secret4 reviews
Juliet Marillier

Knopf Books for Young Readers, 2008

Cybele's Secret
I loved "Wildwood Dancing", so I was thrilled when I saw that Juliet Marillier was writing a sequel (or companion) to it. The main character this time is Paula. We don't see too much of the other sisters (Jena, Iulia, or Stela), as Paula leaves them behind to travel with their merchant father to Istanbul as his assistant. Paula and her father, Teodor, are hoping to purchase a legendary ...

The Silmarillion663 reviews
J.R.R. Tolkien

Houghton Mifflin, 2001

Must read
Wasn't my intention, but I read Tolkien's books, in this order, LOTR, Hobbit, Turin, and Silmarillion. I think it has worked out quite well reading them in reverse chonologic order. The Silmarlillion is a fantastic backdrop and foundation to the entire world Tolkien has created. A Masterpiece.

Even better the second time around!
I read this with two of my children a handful of years ago and just recently, for the second time, with my youngest. It's even better than I remembered! Others have summed up the plot very well, so I'll just say, this is an excellent book!

The Lord of the Rings. 3 Vol. Set1002 reviews
J.R.R. Tolkien

Houghton Mifflin, 2003

Lord of the Rings Book Review
Hello there, I am about half-way through the first book of the Lord of the Rings trilogy and I am loving it. I am amazed at how Tolkien is so descriptive in his writing and puts so much thought to it. The first one-hundred pages are a little rough, but after that it is impossible to put the book down. Obviously, there are no questions asked about how good this book is. Thank you!

AMAZING book!!!
omg~for any tolkien fan out there, this is a must have! Especially for anyone who is fascinated with the maps already included in the Hobbit, LOTR, and the Silmarillion. There are maps following everystep of LOTR and the Hobbit - plus a ...

The Lord of the Rings126 reviews
J.R.R. Tolkien

Houghton Mifflin, 2002

Best edition of LOTR there is!
This review is for that of the edition of the book not the writing itself. Or course Tolkien's writing is phenomonal. This edition has a beautiful case and amazingly illustrated cover protecters. They are all hardcover and are not too heavy. The pages are near tear-proof (of course, not if you try) and are resistant to dirty fingerprints and small bends (if you don't do it on purpose). All in ...

Deluxe Then and Now Bible Maps with CD-Rom: Bible Atlas with Clear Plastic Overlays of Modern Cities and ...6 reviews
Rose Publishing

Rose Publishing, Inc., 2008

MORE THAN MAPS!
This is definitely a great source for finding Biblical locations and referencing them to present day geography however it is so much more than that. Biblical history is summarized in charts and diagrams. The Time Lines of the Old Testament and New Testament reference the books of the Bible to Biblical history, World history, and politcal rulers (Old Testament) of the time. Activities of Jesus' ...

Jeanette Winter

Harcourt Children's Books, 2005

Wonderful Simple Book on Iraq War and Books
I thought this book was wonderful. It is beautifully illustrated, simply written and carrys a powerful message. My students were captivated by it. It tells the story of a librarian in Basra named Alia who goes far in order to save the books from the public library, including some very valuable editions. I liked this book very much and so did my students.

Morgoth's Ring: The Later Silmarillion, Part One (The History of Middle-Earth, Vol. 10)15 reviews
J.R.R. Tolkien

Houghton Mifflin, 1993

More in depth Silmarillion writings, and more depth than you could ever imagine
Part 1 starts out with another version of the Ainulindale. Tolkien would always be revising his stories and the reason for it could be many things. In the Ainulindale he rewrote it to make radical changes to the cosmology. It is very easy to see why most of his writings were never finished, every little change he made would throw off the entire Middle-Earth world from what it was before. ...

Forgotten New York: Views of a Lost Metropolis15 reviews
Kevin Walsh

Collins, 2006

wonderful guide to the real New York
Every large city has its famous landmarks & signature structures which define it in the eyes of the world. For New York, the statue of Liberty, the Empire State building, Times Square and, after 9/11, the absence of the World Trade Towers. These are the sights that travellers and tourists want to see, and having seen them, think that they have "done" New York. But they have surely missed the ...
