A Different Mirror: A History of Multicultural America 39 reviews Ronald Takaki
Back Bay Books, 2008
A must-read history for all Americans I read this book when it first came out and used it as a required reading for a number of undergraduate and graduate courses that I taught ever since. This is a U.S. history book like no other. Dr. Takaki introduced us to the narratives that have been silenced and ignored, all the while providing the historical contexts through which they were shaped, and in turn, helped shaping. Most ...

Multicultural Education in a Pluralistic Society (8th Edition) 24 reviews Donna M. Gollnick, Phillip C. Chinn
Prentice Hall, 2008
Good basic textbook. This is a good basic textbook for raising cultural awareness. As a member of the "dominant" culture in the U.S. who has seen many that don't really understand cultural differences (except on a superficial level), I recommend it. Ideally, we can all learn to be more receptive to other cultures and become a little less "thin skinned" about our own.

If you encounter a friend, relative, or stranger with something on their mind, this book shows you the steps you can take to help that person find the solutions to their own problems, a skill we all have within us. "Why Are All The Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?": A Psychologist Explains the Development of ... 95 reviews Beverly Daniel Tatum
Basic Books, 2003
Interesting Discussion of Racial Identity That Teachers Should Read As a high school teacher in a school district that is multicultural, I found this book to be thought provoking. How we develop our identities is based on our experiences and those of us who are Caucasian have a different experience set than people of color. I grew up in a neighborhood where my family was one of just a very few Caucasian families around, but I still can't say I had the same ...

Happily Even After 4 reviews
Loose Id LLC, 2010
A real love story...that's HOT!! I was reluctant to read this story about a second chance relationship and baby. Mainly because it is rare that the author is able to write a story that is believable with a heroine I could empathize with. I bought it however, because it was Lena. She knocked it out of the park...scored a tricky touchdown with a 2 pointer at the end...sport analogies aside...it was very well done. A great ...

Broadway, 1999
Great Book So far, this book is a real and honest portrayal of what teens (and teachers) experience in their lives, that many of us simply are unaware of. I will be reading this with my students as part of a program to foster compassion, acceptance, and tolerance. Has some adult content.

Stones into Schools: Promoting Peace with Books, Not Bombs, in Afghanistan and Pakistan 248 reviews Greg Mortenson

The way out of Afghanistan August 18, 2010
Several days ago, eight foreign doctors and one Afghan were killed in Badakhshan, purportedly because their killers assumed that they had been proselytizing while providing services to persons in rural areas. Not only do those who leave the comforts of the Mac-and-PC nations to work in conflict or post-conflict zones encounter the dangers of nature; often they encounter the ...

Taking Sides: Clashing Views on Educational Issues 8 reviews James Noll
McGraw-Hill/Dushkin, 2010
Politics in the Classroom An interesting book that provides a balanced look at many "hot topic" educational issues. The viewpoints are short and concise, and written in a point-counterpoint format. There are a wide variety of authors providing their points of view, and the book seems well researched. It seemed objective to me.

Love this book This is a great book. I read it and decided to buy it as a gift for a few of my 7th grader's teachers. One of them had just finished her masters degree and said it was on her summer reading list and was thrilled to have it as a gift. This is a book that keeps it real and doesn't sugar coat everything. It is insightful and interesting. I loved the book and aside from that I loved that my order was ...

The Dreamkeepers: Successful Teachers of African American Children 42 reviews Gloria Ladson-Billings

Inspirational work! Although this book focuses on a familiar theme in educational circles, that of how to reach African-American children in school, it focuses on a variety of areas where educators should pay attention. It does not conclude that only African-American teachers can teach African-American children. On the contrary, author Gladson-Billings highlights teachers from different ethnic backgrounds. Her ...
