Hidden Ireland: Study of Gaelic Munster in the Eighteenth Century

If you think poetry should be taken seriously as a literary option this is a book for you
Not satisfied with your literary outlook? Well this might be worth a look. Takes some research though, but, in the end worth it. With science now running the universities in all but name, the idea of study simply for the love of study looks rather inane when contrasted with the vast output of infotainment by the mass media. Reading Corkery could help you to see through a lot of ...

Reclaiming the Position of Women
Ireland's wealth of authors is surely undeniable and me just back from Ireland to see it all. I bought an Irish Writers poster and there is not a single Irish Woman Writer to be found on it. So, too, at the memorial of Irish Writers outside of St. Patrick's Cathedral Dublin, Co. Dublin, it commemorates Yeats, Shaw, Joyce, O'Casey, Wilde, Synge and all the other major Irish Writers, but it ...

Review from 8th Air Force News Magazine
History is best written by using the facts of the case, in no area more so than the history of war. The Eighth Air Force story needs no additions, no embellishments. Ian Hawkins' telling of the war through the voices of those involved in one of the fiercest air raids of World War II is the way history, and especially that history of the Mighty Eighth, should be told. This is Black Week. The ...

Wonderfully Detailed Tribute To Television's First Family Of Fright
Having recently acquired this wonderful book by author Stephen Cox titled "The Munsters: A Trip Down Mockingbird Lane", as well as the recently released Two Seasons of the classic series on DVD, I once again never fail to marvel at this brilliant and totally original series that ran from 1964-66. Part domestic sitcom, part tribute to the Universal Monsters of old, and part satire on the "then", ...

"A skeleton with a skeleton's key..."
I love the illustrations in this book and its innovative concept: a quirky clock that actually chimes at thirteen, quite unlike the ordinary timekeeper, that only runs from one to twelve. Stimson's brilliant illustrations remind me of my favorite animated films, The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach, with the eccentric faces of unusual characters that pop out at the chime ...

"Sad and thoughtful, and full of rancour and feeling"
And terrific! With Groundwork, Robert Welch distills into one heady brew four hundred years of Anglo-Irish conflict and the historical relationships between the Condon and O'Dwyer families. He does this by presenting four- or five-page stories of individuals and events at seemingly random dates and stirring them together. Some stories are in the first person, giving an effervescence to the ...

A hagiography of the illumined work of this enigmatic Fenian
Dr Morrogh explores in lucid and entertaining detail the English emigration to Southern Ireland. Against the background of renaissance and upheaval, an unusual and fascinating phenomenon grew up. Morrogh illustrates how this goes against all our modern prejudices, and approaches the subtle changes in the Southern Irish character resulting from the immigrants' influence. The failure of ...

Munster Village is an early feminist utopian novel.
This is a very short novel that is more interesting for its ideas than its writing. The heroine is an older woman who uses her money to build a utopia which includes university schooling for women. There is also a grand masquerade ball on the estate that gives a marvelous sense of the scale and grandeur of the great country homes of the late eighteeth century.

An Excellent Resource for Munster Genealogy & History!
Although it was certainly a useful book when first published in 1922, Samuel Trant McCarthy's book has become a unique reference, preserving many fragments of Munster history and genealogy which would have otherwise been lost due to the Public Records Office fire and other upheavals of the Irish War of Independence. As The MacCarthy Mor has observed, it would be quite impossible to write a ...

Poorly researched and thoroughly disappointing.
Perhaps I was biased to this book from the start. The very fact that it marries two fundamentally different shows made it clear that it would not be catering for the fans. Unfortunately my prejudices were confirmed throughout, as this book is sadly as superficial and lacking in imagination as its editorial decision to cover both "The Munsters" and "The Addams Family" in the same book. That ...

Not Really Out of Print--There is an Updated Version
You can find the 'grandson' of this book available under a new name: Munster: Before and After. What follows is my review of the updated version. However, I have read both and they are quite similar. Both are outstanding. The target was Munster, an ancient walled city on the edge of Germany that up until that day had seen comparatively little damage from Allied bombs. But Munster was also a ...

A great tribute to the Munsters
I have been a fan of The Munsters since I saw the very first episode in 1964. I purchased the "First Family of Fright" book in 1989 and have enjoyed it ever since. The book is in an easy to read format, with page margins of 7/8". The photographs are of good quality and interesting, including the unused makeup with larger ears for Butch Patrick, some publicity shots and many behind the scenes ...
