Wild Boy: My Life in Duran Duran4 reviews
Andy Taylor

Grand Central Publishing, 2008

Not what a Duranie Might Expect...
Wow. This was NOT what I expected. I got into Duran Duran in 1984 during their major tour of the USA. Yeah, I saw them at Madison Square Garden in '84... what a show! As a Teenager, I was enamored... the guys could DO NO WRONG. This book really made me feel for them. Andy Taylor put out a book that was far more sympathetic to five 20-somethings who had to deal with a tremendous amount of ...

Hal Leonard Guitar Method, Complete Edition: Books & CD's 1, 2 and 376 reviews
Will Schmid, Greg Koch

Hal Leonard Corporation, 2002

Great book
After about 5 days of practicing chords with the DVD that came with my acoustic guitar, I've been able to start playing actual songs after just one day with this book. It helps that I already know how to read music, but I do think that this book is really helpful. Combined with other learning by demonstration DVDs, I feel like I'm already able to accomplish more than just learning a few chords.

The Dirt: Confessions of the World's Most Notorious Rock Band368 reviews
Tommy Lee, Vince Neil, ...

HarperEntertainment, 2002

Amazing
I just finished reading the The Dirt and it was, honest to God, one of the most compelling books I have ever read. I am a huge Motley Crue fan but the great thing about this book is that you don't have to be a fan, heck you don't even have to like music to enjoy this book. This book is about music, but just barely. There is a little bit about Nikki Sixx and how he came up with lyrics and such but ...

Heaven and Hell: My Life in the Eagles (1974-2001)62 reviews
Don Felder

Wiley, 2008

Very Enjoyable
This book succeeds in doing exactly what it should -- painting a picture of the Eagles experience as seen through the eyes of the author. Too many people get caught up in whether or not they agree or disagree with Felder's views, but I don't think that has any bearing whatsoever on how good the book is. My only minor complaint is: I wish the book had the same level of detail for the Eagles ...

This is a great book for GNR fans who want to get a sneak peek into the beginnings of the baddest band of all time.

Music Theory for Guitarists: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know But Were Afraid to Ask25 reviews
Tom Kolb

Hal Leonard, 2005

Excellent
Tells you all about music theory as it relates to guitar. This won't give you any riffs. That's not the point of the book. It explains music theory as it applies to the guitar and gives you a framework in which to create those riffs. It works very well as a resource. This is not a "play all the stuff in here and you'll get better at guitar book". It delves into some fairly complex territory, ...

The World in Six Songs: How the Musical Brain Created Human Nature2 reviews
Daniel J. Levitin

Dutton Adult, 2008

Songs in the key of life
This fascinating book explores the powerful force music has played in shaping our common humanity. It's evolution, with a backbeat. Author Levitin makes the case that six basic types of songs have existed throughout the course of human history, all over the world. Mankind, apparently, shares a soundtrack. The six broad categories of music are songs about friendship, joy, comfort, knowledge, ...

Study of Orchestration, Third Edition29 reviews
Samuel Adler

W. W. Norton, 2002

Outstanding
I am a complete novice but I recognize this is the required study program. You must also buy the CD/DVDs that go along with the book. Not cheap, but an outstanding learning tool. I would recommend that you read a book on music theory and composition before buying this set to get the most out of the program.

Home: A Memoir of My Early Years52 reviews
Julie Andrews

Hyperion, 2008

I'm glad this book covers the early years in such evocative detail...
Julie Andrews' new autobiography, "Home," is a must-read for anyone who loves Disney, entertainment, England and great family stories. She is a consummate writer -- yes, she is one of the celebrities who writes her own books -- and evokes the mood, settings, and even the smells of her early life, from a dysfunctional but loving family and the last days of British Vaudeville to Broadway stardom ...

Spring Awakening: In the Flesh1 review
David Cote

Simon Spotlight Entertainment, 2008

If you love the show, you wil LOVE this book !!!
Spring Amakening: In the Flesh is a fabulous guide to the broadway show, from conception to casting and beyond. It has lots of wonderful pictures of the cast, as well as interivews with original cast members, replacement cast, ensemble and the minds behind it all; Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater. A full libretto is an added bonus, as the info given in this book about the show and cast is wonderful. ...

Adult All-In-One Course: Lesson-Theory-Technic: Level 130 reviews
Willard A. Palmer, Morton Manus, ...

Alfred Publishing Company, 1994

Accompaniment CD is not flawed, in fact it can be very useful if used correctly. Read carefully
Some reviews here say the CD is flawed because the recordings are not solo piano demonstrations and can be confusing for the learner. I do not agree with those reviews. Here is why; On each piece, the background accompaniment instruments are heard on the left channel of the recording. The piano part is demonstrated on the right channel. On many sound systems, balance between the left and right ...

Virtuoso Pianist in 60 Exercises - Complete: Piano Technique47 reviews

G. Schirmer, Inc., 1986

Done a 180 on this book
I used this book in grade school when I took piano lessons and HATED it with a passion. Some decades later, I'm picking up the piano again, and my weak fingers made me think about these exercises. I acquired the book, and have been working through the exercises again, and over just the space of 6 weeks have noticed dramatic improvement. It's taken a while because I don't practice every day, or ...

Practicing: A Musician's Return to Music (Vintage)19 reviews
Glenn Kurtz

Vintage, 2008

Solfège
Glenn Kurtz' meditation on music, an extended history of the origins of the guitar with biographies of the great composers who wrote for the instrument and even the history of the development of the ancient and modern forms of the stringed guitar, makes for some of the most rewarding reading on a topic of surprising ingenuity. The 'story' outline of the book is brief: Kurtz recounts his ...

Scar Tissue151 reviews
Anthony Kiedis, Larry Sloman

Hyperion, 2005

Anthony Kedis is you and I.
Scar Tissue is an excellent tale. More than anything the story is about a man who has done some hard yards and is witnessing without shame or pride his life story. The book is humbling in many ways. Scar Tissue is as fun to read as it tragic. His account of his day to day dealings as a rockstar leave you feeling like Anothony Kedis could very well be just one of your friends. He is down to ...

The Piano Handbook: A Complete Guide for Mastering Piano56 reviews
Carl Humphries

Backbeat Books, 2002

Great for my purpose
I am a professional pianist who wanted to get out of some bad habits. Mr Humphrie's book takes you back to the beginning so you can undo bad habits and weaknesses you did not even know you had. The CD is a marvellous drilling tool. Set your CD player on repeat and you can drill until you get the the exercise right. Yes,he progesses rapidly but if you are determined and dead serious about ...
