Miracle in the Andes: 72 Days on the Mountain and My Long Trek Home101 reviews
Nando Parrado, Vince Rause

Random House Audio, 2006

Amazing
I couldn't put it down after the first 50 pages. This is an amazing true story of a life changing experience. Tragedy, brutal conditions and the best and worst of raw emotions. If you've seen the movie and read Alive, this book is still worth a read. I'm sure every one of the survivors has a different perspective and take on the experience of some aspects of the events.

ELEVEN DAYS OF HELL: MY TRUE STORY OF KIDNAPPING, TERROR, TORTURE AND HISTORIC FBI & KGB RESCUE26 reviews
YVONNE BORNSTEIN

AuthorHouse, 2004

Holds the reader captive
In a popular Hollywood movie, one of the characters, playing a tough businessman who fancied himself a master of negotiating, expressed the opinion that in a business deal, there is no difference between a gun and a fountain pen. To believe that this is true is to believe that the use of force or violence to obtain monetary reward is equivalent to using artful negotiation, rational persuasion, or ...

A Good Day Anyway: My Poetic Journal of Cancer Survival14 reviews
Dave Massey

BookSurge Publishing, 2007

Encouragment for the cancer patient and their loved ones.
I bought one of the first copies of A Good Day Anyway. My review has been a long time coming. Dave Massey is my son. I have read his poems over and over for the past 10 years. Each time they bring tears to my eyes. Tears of joys, he won two battles with cancer. Tears of pride, he wrote most of them when he was barely able to hold a pen or pencil. Tears of thanks, to the Doctors and Nurses ...

The Day My Mother Left14 reviews
James Prosek

Listening Library (Audio), 2007

A Gem
I first became aware of James Prosek through his artistic and literary treatments of fly fishing and thought I would give The Day My Mother Left, his first fictional effort, a go. I am so glad I did--what a wonderful little book! Though it is intended for young adults, as a mature reader I found it very engaging. This autobiographical novel is a very candid picture of a difficult time in ...

To Serve Them All My Days14 reviews
R.F. Delderfield

Hodder & Stoughton Ltd, 1972

Beautiful
I love this book. It has been quite a long time since I've read a book with such depth and realistic characters. The people in this book ARE REAL. I am having trouble putting into words how much I loved this book. It made me laugh and cry, and I was very depressed when I had finished it. If you like Dickens, I think you will enjoy this author's style. The mini-series is now out on DVD. I ...

Dilbert: I Love My Coworkers Until They Talk 2006 Day-to-Day Calendar21 reviews
Scott Adams

Andrews McMeel Publishing, 2005

Can't do without it.
I've had this on my desk the last 3 or so years. This time around I ordered the desk diary by mistake. I tried to persuade myself that I could use that one, and do without the daily, but I caved in, and ordered this again. Makes the working day get off to a routinely funny start, always a chuckle. A great gift too. I can't fault it.

Cancer on $5 a Day* *(chemo not included): How Humor Got Me Through the Toughest Journey of My Life25 reviews
Robert Schimmel, Alan Eisenstock

Da Capo Press, 2008

Schimmel Finds Humor in a Possible Death Sentence.
In many ways, Robert Schimmel is the Lenny Bruce of our times. After experiencing his performance at the Denver Comedy Works this past weekend, I read this memoir chronicling his deeply-personal, life-and-death battle with Stage III non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Bob is a stand-up comedian best known for his controversial sexual material and self-deprecating sense of humor, his HBO performances, and ...

I've Used All My Sick Days . . . now I'll have to call in dead!7 reviews
Cindi Wood

Creative Dimensions, 1998

"a southern woman" - Jan 29, 2000
I found Cindi Wood's book to be fun and easy to read with plenty of humor and understanding for women and the many roles they are called upon to fulfill, along with all the stress and problems that can arise. It was encouraging with lots of sound, practical advice for many areas of our lives. I loved it and would recommend it to anyone.

Every Play Every Day My Life as a Notre Dame Walk-on8 reviews
Timmy O'Neill

Expert Publishing, 2006

Perception is almost never reality
I bought and read this book after I found this under a "football search" on Amazon. I was looking for a good book for my nephew. Having been a former college running back myself at 5'9" 195lbs, I continually broke stereotypes as Timmy has done in this book. How many times do you hear a sport commentator say something like, "even though he's 5 foot something, he an incredibly gifted runner" It ...

I Love My Mama7 reviews
Peter Kavanagh

Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing, 2003

Wonderful!
We have been reading this story to our 2 year old daughter since she was 2 months old and it's still her favorite book. She now recites the words as I flip through the pages - this book has definitely left an impression. Additionally, the pictures are colorful and fun! It's such a sweet story about the fun a mother and child have together, and the special bond the two share. I'm sure your ...

Teach Us to Outgrow Our Madness: Four Short Novels: The Day He Himself Shall Wipe My Tears Away, Prize Stock, ...9 reviews
Kenzaburo Oe

Grove Press, 1994

seminal!!
I adore this book... I read it all at once, woke up my parents in the middle of the night talking about its descriptions of the sky, talked about it at my college interviews, which were about three years ago... Loved it. But Discovered that some of Oe's other work isn't as good. But wow! The language, plot, the strangeness, the beauty, inventiveness, and reach of the book is tremendous. :)

A More Perfect Union: How I Survived the Happiest Day of My Life9 reviews
Hana Schank

Atria, 2007

An essential reflection on the wedding industry and modern bride experience
Hanna Schank's story of "How I Survived the Happiest Day of My Life" is essential reading for any bride, groom, family member, wedding party member, newlywed, wedding guest, literature fan, or memoir fan. I read this book just a year after planning my own wedding, I had repeated moments of identification with Schank's experience. I would have loved to have been given this book as a ...

Dakota Cowboy : My life in the old days8 reviews
Ike Blasingame

G P Putnam's Sons, 1958

A classic cowboy memoir . . .
Of all the cowboy memoirs, this is one of the best. Ernest "Ike" Blasingame was barely twenty when he went from Texas to South Dakota in 1904 to cowboy for the Matador Land and Cattle Company on rangeland leased from the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation. His account of that experience covers the next 7-8 years, and it's a well-told story full of memorable incidents, cowmen, and horses. There's ...

Back in the Day: My Life And Times With Tupac Shakur10 reviews
Darrin Keith Bastfield

Topeka Bindery, 2003

A different view of Tupac (RIP)
I liked this book quite a bit. Mainly because it offered a different perspective than most other books about Tupac. This book was written by a teenage friend who experieced the same things Tupac himself experienced. They 'shared the struggle' of trying to better themselves in a very harsh environment. This book shows the almost relentless passion Tupac had to try and influence the world around ...

My Greatest Day in Show Business: Screen Legends Share Their Fondest Moments8 reviews
Raymond Richmond

Taylor Trade Publishing, 1999

Conversation Starter!
I was at a seriously stuffy dinner party last week, and most of us did not know one another. It seemed no one could break the ice. Someone mentioned Jerry Springer for some reason, and after "normal opinions" were voiced, I related some of the highlights of his interview that are in this book. What a conversation we had because of what I'd read! Everyone ended up talking (sometimes over one ...

Around the Majors in Sixty Days: My Baseball Dream7 reviews
Ray Bergman, Judith Hettler

R. Bergman, 1997

TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALLGAME....
I had the pleasure of meeting Ray at Border's book store here in Sacramento and hearing his story besides reading it. I even got him to autograph a baseball. I have always said "if I win the lotto I will go to a baseball game.....in every stadium in the MLB circuit..." Well, Ray, surely accomplished that...now it is my turn. Great stories. Thanks Ray for writing it.

My Lucky Day13 reviews

Puffin, 2005

smart pig
i liked this book because the pig is smarter than the wolf and has him do things for him like cook and clean him, that way he wont eat him. then the wolf gets too tired and falls asleep. the pig gets away and then you find out in the end that he had planned it all along. its really funny.
